Variable definitions of pseudoparalysis have been used in the literature. Recent systematic reviews and biomechanical studies call for a grading of loss of force couple balance and the use of the terms 'pseudoparesis' and 'pseudoparalysis'. Pain should be excluded as the cause of loss of active function.

Understanding shoulder pseudoparalysis. Part II: Treatment.

EFORT Open Rev

March 2022

Deaprtment of Orthopaedic Surgery, Royal Perth Hospital, Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

Decision-making for the treatment of pseudoparalytic shoulders is complex and a high level of experience in shoulder surgery and outcome evaluation is required. Management and results depend on clinical findings, tear and tissue quality, patient and surgeon criteria. Clinical findings determine the exact definition and direction of pseudoparesis and pseudoparalysis.

Pharmacological prevention of intimal hyperplasia: A state-of-the-art review.

Pharmacol Ther

July 2022

Service of Vascular Surgery, Department of Heart and Vessels, University Hospital, Rue du Bugnon 36, 1011 Lausanne, Switzerland; Service of Vascular Surgery, Ensemble Hospitalier de la Côte, Rue du Crêt 2, 1110 Morges, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Intimal hyperplasia (IH) occurs in a considerable number of cases of blood vessel reconstruction by stenting or balloon angioplasty, venous bypass grafting, and arteriovenous dialysis accesses. It is triggered by endothelial injury during the vascular intervention and leads to vessel restenosis with life-threatening consequences for patients. To date, the drugs used for IH prevention in clinics-paclitaxel and rapalog drugs-have been focusing primarily on the vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation pathway of IH development.

Coronary-pulmonary artery fistulas (CPAF) are congenital vascular anomalies detected incidentally in most cases. When a significant left-right shunt exists, surgical, or percutaneous treatment is indicated. We describe a challenging case of CPAF closure, by percutaneous approach, in a patient symptomatic for dyspnea and evidence of a significant left-right shunt.

The substantial progresses during the last decades in the field of infectious diseases have significantly improved their prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Basic and medical sciences have efficiently dealt with the challenges of emerging infections, infectious complications related to the increasing complexity of medical practices and marked slow-down in the development of new antimicrobial agents. During the worldwide crisis related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the « medical normality » has been put in stand-by, but medical advances have fortunately continued.

Indications for Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA) have been extended over the last 25 years, and RSA has become the most frequently implanted shoulder arthroplasty worldwide. The initial Grammont design with medialization of the joint center of rotation (JCOR), placement of the JCOR at the bone-implant interface, distalization and semi-constrained configuration has been associated with drawbacks such as reduced rotation and range of motion (ROM), notching, instability and loss of shoulder contour. This review summarizes new strategies to overcome these drawbacks and analyzes the use of glenoid-sided, humeral-sided or global bipolar lateralization, which are applied differently by surgeons and current implant manufacturers.

Objectives: Imipenem is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent used in critically ill neonates after failure of first-line treatments. Few studies have described imipenem disposition in this population. The objectives of our study were: (i) to characterize imipenem population pharmacokinetics (PK) in a cohort of neonates; and (ii) to conduct model-based simulations to evaluate the performance of six different dosing regimens aiming at optimizing PK target attainment.

The benefits of vaccination - regarding COVID-19 infection and transmission, as well as COVID-associated complications - clearly outweigh the potential risk of vaccine-associated inflammation of the heart and other adverse events. Given the current state of knowledge, the outcome of myocarditis and pericarditis following vaccination is generally good. This review aims to guide physicians in the early diagnosis and management of suspected myocarditis following mRNA COVID vaccination.

Burnout, depression and anxiety among Swiss medical students - A network analysis.

J Psychiatr Res

November 2021

Department of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine, University Hospital Zurich, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland. Electronic address:

It is well established that burnout in medical students is associated with depression and anxiety at a syndromal level. Moreover, there is an ongoing debate about the extent to which burnout overlaps with depression and anxiety. The emerging network approach to psychopathology offers a new perspective on the interrelations between mental disorders focusing on symptom-level association.

The management of residents with BPSD (behavioral and psychological syndromes related to dementia) is often difficult ; psychotropic medications are frequently prescribed to deal with these problems, but because of the multiple side effects and their limited effectiveness, alternatives to medication should be considered. We wanted to test and compare the effectiveness of two non-medicinal approaches (NMA) in the management of residents with BPSD like agitation, anxiety, sleep disturbances or pain and see if they can permit to reduce the use of psychotropic drugs.

Several reports showed SARS-CoV-2 rapid antigen tests (RATs) performances among COVID-19 symptomatic subjects in outpatient settings during periods of highest incidence of infections and high rates of hospital admissions, but few data are present for asymptomatic patients. We investigated the role of RATs in an emergency department, as a novel screening tool before admission for COVID-19 asymptomatic patients. A total of 116 patients were screened on admission in a 250-bed community hospital in Morges, Switzerland.

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) was originally developed because of unsatisfactory results with anatomic shoulder arthroplasty options for the majority of degenerative shoulder conditions and fractures. After initial concerns about RTSA longevity, indications were extended to primary osteoarthritis with glenoid deficiency, massive cuff tears in younger patients, fracture, tumour and failed anatomic total shoulder replacement.Traditional RTSA by Grammont has undergone a number of iterations such as glenoid lateralization, reduced neck-shaft angle, modular, stemless components and onlay systems.

Detection of 1,3-β-d-glucan (BDG) in serum has been evaluated for its inclusion as a mycological criterion of invasive fungal infections (IFI) according to EORTC and Mycoses Study Group (MSG) definitions. BDG testing may be useful for the diagnosis of both invasive aspergillosis and invasive candidiasis, when interpreted in conjunction with other clinical/radiological signs and microbiological markers of IFI. However, its performance and utility vary according to patient population (hematologic cancer patients, solid-organ transplant recipients, intensive care unit patients) and pretest likelihood of IFI.

We report the case of a 74-year-old woman who sustained a scapular spine (SS) fracture after a fall 4 weeks after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with locked 90°-double plating resulted in union of the SS fracture with a good outcome (subjective shoulder value: 80%; Constant score 67; 1 year) despite of an adjacent lateral acromion fracture 3 weeks after ORIF. This is the second description in the literature of a successful double plate ORIF with union of an SS fracture after RSA.
