Commingled human remains were discovered in TT110 (Djehuty tomb; Dynasty XVIII), located in El Sheikh Abd el Qurna, Luxor, Egypt. The tomb had been reused over a long period of time (1570-332 BCE). In a small area distinct from the comingled remains, an incomplete skull and two fragments, consistent with that of a young adult female, between 25 and 40 years of age were found.

Background: The 12‑lead ECG plays an important role in triaging patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease, making automated ECG interpretation statements of "Acute MI" or "Acute Ischemia" crucial, especially during prehospital transport when access to physician interpretation of the ECG is limited. However, it remains unknown how automated interpretation statements correspond to adjudicated clinical outcomes during hospitalization. We sought to evaluate the diagnostic performance of prehospital automated interpretation statements to four well-defined clinical outcomes of interest: confirmed ST- segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI); presence of actionable coronary culprit lesions, myocardial necrosis, or any acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), previously referred to as temporal arteritis, continues to pose significant diagnostic challenges to clinicians as it could have unusual and atypical presentations. We present the case of a 69-year-old Caucasian male who had presented with painful scrotal swelling and bilateral arm pain and was eventually diagnosed with GCA based on histological findings. His symptoms resolved completely with the initiation of high-dose steroids.

Background: Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is one of the most highly prevalent and complicated malignancies. Glycolysis and cholesterogenesis pathways both play important roles in cancer metabolic adaptations. The main aims of this study are to subtype SKCM based on glycolytic and cholesterogenic genes and to build a clinical outcome predictive algorithm based on the subtypes.

Antifibrinolytic agents such as tranexamic acid (TXA) inhibit the fibrinolytic pathway and protect blood clots from being degraded, thereby promoting hemostasis. They have been used to reduce blood loss in various settings including obstetrics. Based on current evidence, TXA can be considered as a therapeutic adjunct to control postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) after vaginal and cesarean deliveries, with earlier administration preferred.

Mechanical stretching of the left laryngeal nerve secondary to an enlarged left atrium was first described by Dr Norbert Ortner in 1987. An extensive literature search revealed only 76 reported cases of Ortner syndrome, with the more recent reports describing other causes of the syndrome such as pulmonary hypertension, aortic dissection, and a thoracic aneurysm. We recently encountered this rare pathologic entity in an elderly man who had presented with severe hoarseness, presumed to be due to one of the aforementioned vascular anomalies.

Twin pregnancies are common and associated with pregnancy complications and adverse outcomes. Prenatal clinical management is intensive and has been hampered by inferior screening and less acceptable invasive testing. For aneuploidy screening, meta-analyses show that non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) through analysis of cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) is superior to serum and ultrasound-based tests.

Background: This study aims to analyze the cost of the entire transfusion process in Turkey including evaluation of the cost of transfusion from the perspective of hospital management and determination of savings achieved with the transfusion improvement program.
Methods: Invoices, labor, material costs were calculated with micro-costing method, while general production expenses were calculated with gross costing method between January 2018 and December 2019. Unit costs for each blood product were calculated separately by collecting unit acquisition costs, material costs, labor costs, and general production expenses and, then, distributed into six different blood products as follows: erythrocyte suspension, fresh frozen plasma, pooled platelet, apheresis platelet, cryoprecipitate, fresh whole blood.

Gadodiamide is a gadolinium-based chemical element that is considered safe and well tolerated in patients without renal dysfunction and is therefore routinely used as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging. Although radio-opaque, it is not frequently used for coronary angiography due to its less than optimal image quality and prohibitive cost. Our center's previous experience was less than satisfactory but the addition of a power injection system yielded good quality diagnostic images.

As the COVID-19 pandemic runs its course around the globe, a mismatch of resources and needs arises: In some areas, healthcare systems are faced with increased number of COVID-19 patients potentially exceeding their capacity, while in other areas, healthcare systems are faced with procedural cancellations and drop in demands. TeamHealth (Knoxville, TN), a multidisciplinary healthcare organization was able to roll out a systemic approach to redeploy its clinicians practicing in the fields of emergency medicine, hospital medicine and anesthesiology from areas of less need (faced with reduced or no work) to areas outside of their normal practice facing immediate need.

Background And Objectives: Previous studies by the Cost of Blood Consensus Conference (COBCON) have used a comprehensive, standardized and generalizable activity-based costing (ABC) model to estimate the cost of red blood cell transfusions and plasma transfusion. The objective of this study was to determine the total cost of platelet transfusions in a real-world US hospital inpatient setting.
Materials And Methods: This database analysis study retrospectively collected costs for all activities related to platelet transfusion in a single-acute care US teaching hospital in 2017.

Background: Over the last decade, preoperative anemia has become recognized as a clinical condition in need of management. Although the etiology of preoperative anemia can be multifactorial, two thirds of anemic elective surgical patients have iron deficiency anemia. At the same time, one third of nonanemic elective surgical patients are also iron deficient.

Engaging patients-defined broadly as individuals with lived experience of a given condition, family members, caregivers, and the organisations that represent them-as partners in research is a priority for policymakers, funders, and the public. Nonetheless, formal efforts to engage patients are absent from most studies, and models to support meaningful patient engagement in clinical anaesthesia research have not been previously described. Here, we review our experience in developing and implementing a multifaceted patient engagement strategy within the Regional Versus General Anesthesia for Promoting Independence After Hip Fracture (REGAIN) surgery trial, an ongoing randomised trial comparing spinal vs general anaesthesia for hip fracture surgery in 1600 older adults across 45 hospitals in the USA and Canada.

Three canines were identified with aberrant drainage of the caudal vena cava to the left atrium, consistent with imperforate cor triatriatum dexter, and concurrent patent foramen ovale. All three had concurrent significant pulmonic stenosis with varying degrees of hypoplasia of the right ventricular outflow tract. Echocardiography, positive contrast studies, and angiography confirmed the diagnosis.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is seriously challenging the healthcare system globally. Endothelial damage and increased coagulation activity have been reported in some patients with COVID-19, resulting in a variety of thrombotic events. We report the cases of four patients with various severities of COVID-19 who had presented with acute arterial thrombosis.

Topical and transdermal formulations are a common means of pharmaceutical drug delivery. If a drug is able to penetrate transcutaneously, the skin is an ideal site for the delivery of medications for both local (topical) and systemic (transdermal) effects. The administration of analgesics through the skin poses several potential advantages to those administered orally including compliance, the ability to deliver a drug to a peripheral target site and more stable and sustained plasma levels.
