Generative adversarial networks with fully connected layers to denoise PPG signals.

Objective: The detection of arterial pulsating signals at the skin periphery with Photoplethysmography (PPG) are easily distorted by motion artifacts. This work explores the alternatives to the aid of PPG reconstruction with movement sensors (accelerometer and/or gyroscope) which to date have demonstrated the best pulsating signal reconstruction.

Approach: A generative adversarial network with fully connected layers (FC-GAN) is proposed for the reconstruction of distorted PPG signals.

Uptake and safety of Sotrovimab for prevention of severe COVID-19 in a cohort and self-controlled case series study.

Background: Sotrovimab is a neutralising monoclonal antibody (nMAB) currently available to treat extremely clinically vulnerable COVID-19 patients in England. Trials have shown it to have mild to moderate side effects, however, evidence regarding its safety in real-world settings remains insufficient.

Methods: Descriptive and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate uptake, and a self-controlled case series analysis performed to measure the risk of hospital admission (hospitalisation) associated with 49 pre-specified suspected adverse outcomes in the period 2-28 days post-Sotrovimab treatment among eligible patients treated between December 11, 2021 and May 24, 2022.

Factors influencing virtual reality use in paediatric acquired brain injury upper limb rehabilitation: a qualitative study.

Objective: Upper limb movement difficulties in children with acquired brain injury (ABI) result in longer recovery times compared with lower limb. Intensive neurorehabilitation promotes a good long-term functional outcome. Virtual reality (VR) and video game technologies are invaluable adjuncts to traditional neurological rehabilitation as they help to motivate, engage and gain children's compliance in goal-directed therapy.

Improving the adoption of a school-based nutrition program: findings from a collaborative network of randomised trials.

Background: Public health nutrition interventions, including school-based programs, are a recommended approach to improve child dietary behaviours. However, the adoption of effective school-based nutrition programs face numerous challenges, including the limited evidence on effective strategies to maximise implementation and adoption of such programs. This study aimed to address this evidence gap by employing a novel collaborative network trial design to evaluate a series of implementation strategies employed by three NSW Local Health Districts, to improve school adoption of an effective school-based nutrition program ('SWAP IT').

Background: People living with alcohol use disorder (AUD) who develop Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) may be at higher risk of diabetes-complications.

Aim: Our aims were to compare diabetes-monitoring and incidence of diabetes-complications between people with and without AUD prior to T2DM diagnosis attending primary care in England.

Design & Setting: We used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) Aurum linked with Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and Office for National Statistics (ONS) mortality data.

Background: Biologic (b) and targeted synthetic (ts) disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) target inflammatory pathways implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma (MM). It is unknown whether use of b/tsDMARDs affects the incidence of MM.

Methods: In this cohort study using Veterans Health Administration (VHA) data, we identified Veterans newly diagnosed with RA from 1/1/2002 to 12/31/2018 using diagnostic codes and medication fills.

Leg Blood Flow During Exercise with Blood Flow Restriction: Evidence for and Implications of Compensatory Cardiovascular Mechanisms.

Proximal limb cuff inflation to 40% arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) is assumed to reduce exercising leg perfusion, creating "blood flow restriction" (BFR). However, no study has validated this assumption. 18 healthy young participants (9F) performed two-legged knee flexion/extension exercise at 25% WRpeak with bilateral cuffs applied to the proximal thigh at 0% AOP (CTL), 20% AOP and 40% AOP.

Exploring family profiles in explaining heterogeneity in parenting program engagement and effectiveness.

Parenting programs have proven effective in reducing disruptive child behavior. However, not all families benefit equally, and, to date, we have little insight into who benefits more or less and why. One possible solution is to explore how different potential moderators cluster together in individual families and whether such family profiles predict who benefits more or less from these programs.

This study provides a bibliometric and bibliographic review of emerging applications of micro- and nanotechnology in treating ocular diseases, with a primary focus on glaucoma. We aim to identify key research trends and analyze advancements in devices and drug delivery systems for ocular treatments. The methodology involved analyzing 385 documents indexed on the Web of Science using tools such as VOSviewer and Bibliometrix.

Surgical and Pathological Results Following Neoadjuvant Nivolumab and Platinum-Based Chemotherapy for Locally Advanced Resectable NSCLC: A Multicentre Real-World Series From England.

Background: To evaluate the real-world surgical and pathological outcomes following neoadjuvant nivolumab in combination with chemotherapy in a multicentre national cohort of patients.

Methods: Retrospective analysis on consecutive patients treated in three tertiary referral hospitals in UK with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and immunotherapy (nivolumab) for stage II-IIIB nonsmall cell lung cancer (March 2023-May 2024). Surgical and pathological outcomes were assessed.

Value attributes of advanced therapy medicinal products: a documentary analysis of comments received from stakeholders during reimbursement decisions to England's national institute of health and care excellence.

Objectives: Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are transformative healthcare interventions, however, there has been limited research exploring their value. The objective of this study was to conduct a thematic analysis as part of a documentary analysis to identify value attributes of ATMPs.

Methods: As part of the NICE assessment processes in England, stakeholders are invited to provide comments on the technology.

A complete understanding of gene regulation will require the mapping of these chromatin features in small cell number samples. Here we describe a novel genome-wide chromatin profiling technology, named as Nicking Enzyme Epitope targeted DNA sequencing (NEED-seq).

Extended Post-Operative Antibiotic Usage Does Not Reduce Surgical Site Infections after Spinal Surgery.

Currently there is not a clear basis of evidence for post-operative antibiotic duration in spine surgery. A better understanding of risk factors and proper dosing for antibiotics will help improve outcomes and further define appropriate antibiotic use. A single-center retrospective cohort study of all patients undergoing spinal fusions and/or decompressions between January 1, 2018, and July 1, 2023 was performed.

Testing hypotheses of skull function with comparative finite element analysis: three methods reveal contrasting results.

Comparative finite element analysis involves standardising aspects of models to test equivalent loading scenarios across species. However, regarding feeding biomechanics of the vertebrate skull, what is considered "equivalent" can depend on the hypothesis. Using 13 diversely-shaped skulls of marsupial bettongs and potoroos (Potoroidae), we demonstrate that scaling muscle forces to standardise specific aspects of biting mechanics can produce clearly opposing comparisons of stress or strain that are differentially suited to address specific kinds of hypotheses.

It is very meaningful to carry out bibliometric analysis in the research field of diabetes and osteoporosis to describe the current international trend and present a visual representation of the past and emerging trends of diabetes and osteoporosis in the past decade.

Engagement in child psychiatry department appointments: An analysis of electronic medical records in one safety-net hospital in New England, USA.

Objective: This study examined whether being scheduled in a screening clinic versus scheduled directly with a long-term provider to conduct a mental health intake (MHI) is associated with engagement in child psychiatry services in New England, USA.

Method: We used electronic medical record data from one safety-net hospital serving a predominantly low-income and minoritised population. The study sample included 815 youths aged 0 to 25 years, referred or scheduled for a MHI between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016.

Mental health and socio-cognitive predictors of adherence to COVID-19 social distancing rules in adolescents in England.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted governments worldwide to introduce social distancing measures, including school closures and restrictions on in-person socialising. However, adherence to social distancing was challenging for many - particularly adolescents, for whom social interaction is crucial for development. The current study aimed to identify individual-level influences on adherence to social distancing in a longitudinal sample of adolescents aged 11-20 years in England, who took part in a randomised controlled trial.

Marburg variant of multiple sclerosis: A young women case report.

Marburg disease (malignant multiple sclerosis, MS) is a rare, acute MS variant, predominantly occurring among young adults. Because it is characterized by rarity, high morbidity and mortality rates, the disease needs to be further characterized, and the experience of the physicians play a role in treatment regimens. We report the case of a 15-years-old female presenting with progressive weakness over the limbs, hyperreflexia and loss of sensation by physical examination, lab tests and radiological investigations (MRI).

Evaluating and Improving the Quality of Surgical Operative Notes at the Port Sudan Teaching Hospital.

Background Thorough and standardized documentation of operative notes is essential for effective communication, patient safety, legal protection, and the continuity of care. However, in many hospitals in Sudan, surgeons often use non-standardized methods, resulting in inconsistent and incomplete records. This study evaluates the quality of operative notes at the Port Sudan Teaching Hospital using the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) guidelines, aiming to improve compliance and documentation practices.

Heterogeneity in Risk and Implications for Hepatitis C Reinfection in People Who Inject Drugs in England.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with significant morbidity, mortality and health economic burden. Over 90% of HCV cases in England occur in people who inject drugs (PWID). Current treatments for HCV are effective but do not protect against reinfection.
