December 2024

Engineering Research Center of Molecular- and Neuro-imaging of Ministry of Education, School of Life Science and Technology, Xidian University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710126, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Natural enzyme-based therapies for cancer often struggle with stability during delivery, limiting their effectiveness.
  • Researchers created a new nanoplatform called GCI@RPCM that uses natural enzymes and a photothermal agent, enclosed in special materials targeting tumors and responding to heat.
  • This system can release enzymes when activated by NIR light, significantly reducing tumor cells and completely eradicating tumors in tests without causing harm to the rest of the body.

Article Synopsis
  • Identifying new imaging biomarkers for lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) could help us understand the brain processes behind this condition.
  • In a study involving 46 LPE patients and 35 healthy controls, researchers used a technique called Percent Amplitude of Fluctuation (PerAF) to compare brain function during rest, finding notable differences between the two groups.
  • Results showed increased PerAF in areas linked to emotional and sensory processing in LPE patients, along with correlations between PerAF changes and neurotransmitter systems, suggesting that ejaculatory control issues may stem from neurotransmitter dysregulation.

CD24-Targeted NIR-II Fluorescence Imaging Enables Early Detection of Colorectal Neoplasia.

Cancer Res

December 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, Beijing Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Colorectal cancer remains a significant health challenge despite improved screening techniques, as traditional methods like white-light colonoscopy often miss flat lesions that can lead to advanced tumors.
  • - A new near-infrared fluorescent probe targeting CD24 has been developed, showing high sensitivity (92%) and specificity (92%) for detecting colorectal cancer, including small lesions under 1 mm, which are typically overlooked.
  • - This study's results suggest that CD24-targeted NIR-II imaging could greatly enhance early detection of colorectal cancer during procedures like colonoscopy, potentially identifying precancerous lesions that other methods fail to see.

Department of Radiology, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, No. 1 Shuaifuyuan, Dongcheng District, Beijing 100730, China.

The innovative PD-1/PD-L1 pathway strategy is gaining significant traction in cancer therapeutics. However, fluctuating response rates of 20-40% to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, coupled with the risk of hyperprogression after immunotherapy, underscore the need for accurate patient selection and the identification of more beneficiaries. Molecular imaging, specifically near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging, is a valuable alternative for real-time, noninvasive visualization of dynamic PD-L1 expression .

Key Laboratory of Big Data-Based Precision Medicine of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, School of Engineering Medicine, Beihang University, Beijing, China.

Novel strategies utilizing light in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II; 900-1,880 nm wavelengths) offer the potential to visualize and treat solid tumours with enhanced precision. Over the past few decades, numerous techniques leveraging NIR-II light have been developed with the aim of precisely eliminating tumours while maximally preserving organ function. During cancer surgery, NIR-II optical imaging enables the visualization of clinically occult lesions and surrounding vital structures with increased sensitivity and resolution, thereby enhancing surgical quality and improving patient prognosis.

Significance: fNIRS-based neuroenhancement depends on the feasible detection of hemodynamic responses in target brain regions. Using the lateral occipital complex (LOC) and the fusiform face area (FFA) in the ventral visual pathway as neurofeedback targets boosts performance in visual recognition. However, the feasibility of utilizing fNIRS to detect LOC and FFA activity in adults remains to be validated as the depth of these regions may exceed the detection limit of fNIRS.

January 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory of Preclinical Research and Evaluation for Cardiovascular Implant Materials, Animal Experimental Centre, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Disease, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, 100037, China.

Background: Dilation may be the first right ventricular change and accelerates the progression of threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias and heart failure for patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), but the treatment for right ventricular dilation remains limited.

Methods: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of blood and biventricular myocardium from 8 study participants was performed, including 6 end-stage heart failure patients with ARVC and 2 normal controls. ScRNA-seq data was then deeply analyzed, including cluster annotation, cellular proportion calculation, and characterization of cellular developmental trajectories and interactions.

April 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Huashan Hospital, Institute for Translational Brain Research, State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology, MOE Frontiers Center for Brain Science Fudan University Shanghai China.

Functional subcellular organelle mitochondria are emerging as a crucial player and driver of cancer. For maintaining the sites of cellular respiration, mitochondria experience production, and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) underlying oxidative damage in electron transport chain carriers. Precision medicine targeting mitochondria can change nutrient availability and redox homeostasis in cancer cells, which might represent a promising strategy for suppressing tumor growth.

However, little is known about how visual experience modulates resting-state brain network dynamics. To explore this, we recruited 22 radiology interns and 22 matched healthy controls and used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and the degree centrality (DC) method to investigate changes in brain network dynamics.
