Enabling minimally invasive and precise control of liquid release in dental implants is crucial for therapeutic functions such as delivering antibiotics to prevent biofilm formation, infusing stem cells to promote osseointegration, and administering other biomedicines. However, achieving controllable liquid cargo release in dental implants remains challenging due to the lack of wireless and miniaturized fluidic control mechanisms. Here wireless miniature pumps and valves that allow remote activation of liquid cargo delivery in dental implants, actuated and controlled by external magnetic fields (<65 mT), are reported.

Article Synopsis
  • Spinal cord atrophy, detectable through MRI, has become an important marker for neurodegeneration in neurological disorders, but traditional methods based on cross-sectional area are prone to variability.
  • The study introduces SIENA-SC, a refined imaging technique that directly measures volume changes in the spinal cord over time, showing lower measurement error compared to existing methods.
  • Results indicate that SIENA-SC can effectively differentiate between healthy individuals and Multiple Sclerosis patients, making it a reliable and automated tool for monitoring spinal cord atrophy in clinical research.

DNA-PKcs is a crucial protein target involved in DNA repair and response pathways, with its abnormal activity closely associated with the occurrence and progression of various cancers. In this study, we employed a deep learning-based screening and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation-based pipeline, identifying eight candidates for DNA-PKcs targets. Subsequent experiments revealed the effective inhibition of DNA-PKcs-mediated cell proliferation by three small molecules (5025-0002, M769-1095, and V008-1080).

Biomedical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and functional surface coating rely on switchable adsorption and desorption of specialized guest molecules. Poly(dehydroalanine), a polyzwitterion containing pH-dependent positive and negative charges, shows promise for such reversible loading, especially when integrated into a gel network. Herein, we present the fabrication of poly(dehydroalanine)-derived gels of different size scales and evaluate them with respect to their practical use in biomedicine.

Background: Infants suffering from lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) have distinct nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiome profiles that correlate with severity of disease. Whether these profiles precede the infection or are a consequence of it, is unknown. In order to answer this question, longitudinal studies are needed.

Only a small number of studies have assessed structural differences between the two hemispheres during childhood and adolescence. However, the existing findings lack consistency or are restricted to a particular brain region, a specific brain feature, or a relatively narrow age range. Here, we investigated associations between brain asymmetry and age as well as sex in one of the largest pediatric samples to date (n = 4265), aged 1-18 years, scanned at 69 sites participating in the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis) consortium.

Gene panel sequencing has become a common diagnostic tool for detecting somatically acquired mutations in myeloid neoplasms. However, many panels have restricted content, provide insufficient sensitivity levels, or lack clinically validated workflows. We here describe the development and validation of the Genomic Medicine Sweden myeloid gene panel (GMS-MGP), a capture-based 191 gene panel including mandatory genes in contemporary guidelines as well as emerging candidates.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how sleep is regulated in male mice, especially after staying awake for a long time.
  • They found that a special protein called CaMKII helps control certain brain cells (called PV neurons) that are important for sleep.
  • When these PV neurons become more active, it leads to more rebound sleep, which happens after being awake for too long.

Despite the widespread use of photodynamic therapy in clinical practice, there is a lack of personalized methods for assessing the sufficiency of photodynamic exposure on tumors, depending on tissue parameters that change during light irradiation. This can lead to different treatment results. The objective of this article was to conduct a comprehensive review of devices and methods employed for the implicit dosimetric monitoring of personalized photodynamic therapy for tumors.

RNA-based therapeutics, including siRNA, have obtained recognition in recent years due to their potential to treat various chronic and rare diseases. However, there are still limitations to lipid-based drug delivery systems in the clinical use of RNA therapeutics due to the need for optimization in the design and the preparation process. In this study, we propose adaptive focused ultrasound (AFU) as a drug loading technique to protect RNA from degradation by encapsulating small RNA in nanoliposomes, which we term nanoplexes.

MiMiC is a framework for performing multiscale simulations in which loosely coupled external programs describe individual subsystems at different resolutions and levels of theory. To make it highly efficient and flexible, we adopt an interoperable approach based on a multiple-program multiple-data (MPMD) paradigm, serving as an intermediary responsible for fast data exchange and interactions between the subsystems. The main goal of MiMiC is to avoid interfering with the underlying parallelization of the external programs, including the operability on hybrid architectures (e.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is linked to inflammation in adipose tissue (AT) and the secretion of extracellular vesicles (EVs), which play a role in metabolic disorders; however, the exact mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • Research examined EVs from human adipocytes and AT in subjects undergoing bariatric surgery, using various advanced analytical techniques to understand the characteristics and behaviors of these EVs in response to different treatments.
  • Findings indicated that mature adipocytes release more EVs than preadipocytes, with inflammatory stimuli further enhancing EV secretion, particularly from visceral AT; this suggests a connection between increased EV release, AT expansion, and inflammation in obesity.

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan 430070, China.

Nanostructures with sufficiently large areas are necessary for the development of practical devices. Current efforts to fabricate large-area nanostructures using step-and-repeat nanoimprint lithography, however, result in either wide seams or low efficiency due to ultraviolet light leakage and the overflow of imprint resin. In this study, we propose an efficient method for large-area nanostructure fabrication using step-and-repeat nanoimprint lithography with a composite mold.
