February 2025

Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry & Institute of Biotechnology of Asturias, University of Oviedo, c/Julián Clavería 8, 33006, Oviedo, Spain. Electronic address:

The COVID-19 outbreak was an important turning point in the development of a new generation of biosensing technologies. The synergistic combination of an immunochromatographic test (lateral flow immunoassays, LFIA) and signal transducers provides enhanced sensitivity and the ability to quantify in the rapid tests. This is possible due to the variety of nanoparticles that can be used as reporter labels.

Polyurethane (PU) grouting materials are widely used in underground engineering rehabilitation, particularly in reinforcement and waterproofing engineering in deep-water environments. The long-term effect of complex underground environments can lead to nanochannel formation within PU, weakening its repair remediation effect. However, the permeation behavior and microscopic mechanisms of water molecules within PU nanochannels remain unclear.

With the proliferation of mobile terminals and the rapid growth of network applications, fine-grained traffic identification has become increasingly challenging. Methods based on machine learning and deep learning have achieved remarkable results, but they heavily rely on the distribution of training data, which makes them ineffective in handling unseen samples. In this paper, we propose AG-ZSL, a zero-shot learning framework based on traffic behavior and attribute representations for general encrypted traffic classification.

The process of establishing relay protection and automation (RPA) settings for electric power systems (EPSs) entails complex calculations of operating modes. Traditionally, these calculations are based on symmetrical components, which require the building of equivalent circuits of various sequences. This approach can lead to errors both when identifying the operating modes and when modeling the RPA devices.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a crucial structure that maintains brain homeostasis by regulating the entry of molecules and cells from the bloodstream into the central nervous system (CNS). Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, as well as ischemic stroke, compromise the integrity of the BBB. This leads to increased permeability and the infiltration of harmful substances, thereby accelerating neurodegeneration.

Bioelectrochemistry

January 2025

University of Bologna, Department of Industrial Chemistry "Toso Montanari", Center of Chemical Catalysis-C(3), Via Piero Gobetti 85, 40129 Bologna, Italy. Electronic address:

Print-Light-Synthesis (PLS) combines the inkjet printing of a ruthenium precursor ink with the simultaneous photo-induced generation of ruthenium oxide films. During PLS, inkjet-printing generates on conductive as well as insulating substrates micrometer-thin reaction volumes that contain with high precision defined precursor loadings. Upon direct UV light irradiation, the Ru precursor converts to RuO while all other ink components escape in the gas phase.

State Key Laboratory of Soil Erosion and Dryland Agriculture on the Loess Plateau, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, 712100, China; College of Soil and Water Conservation Science and Engineering (Institute of Soil and Water Conservation), Northwest A&F University, Yangling, 712100, China. Electronic address:

Nitrogen (N) fixing legumes typically enhance the ability of coexisting non-N-fixing species to resist disease and drought, but whether legumes enhance their ability to resist salt stress remains unknown, restricting our ability to explore the potential of legumes to rehabilitate salt-affected ecosystems. We conducted a simulation experiment to examine whether and how legumes influence the response of coexisting grass to salt stress. We compared the effects of salt stress on the plant biomass, root cell viability, antioxidant enzyme activities, soil extracellular enzyme activities and microbial functional gene abundances associated with N and phosphorus (P) cycling between pure grass communities and legume-grass mixtures.

The combination of ultralong-acting neuromuscular block and subsequent on-demand rapid reversal may provide prolonged surgeries with improved conditions by omitting continuous or repetitive blocker administration, enabling a more stable and predictable hemodynamic profile and eliminating residual block. For this target, we prepared 19 imidazolium-incorporated tetracationic macrocycles. In vivo studies with rats revealed that one macrocycle (IMC-14) displays extremely high blocking activity.

Thermally Conductive Shape-Stabilized Phase Change Materials Enabled by Paraffin Wax and Nanoporous Structural Expanded Graphite.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Nonferrous Metals and Processes, GRIMN Group Co., Ltd., Beijing 100088, China.

Paraffin wax (PW) has significant potential for spacecraft thermal management, but low thermal conductivity and leakage issues make it no longer sufficient for the requirements of evolving spacecraft thermal control systems. Although free-state expanded graphite (EG) as a thermal conductivity enhancer can ameliorate the above problems, it remains challenging to achieve higher thermal conductivity (K) (>8 W/(m·K)) at filler contents below 10 wt.% and to mitigate the leakage problem.

Ester-Bearing Calix[]phenoxazines: Side Chain Enhanced Recognition and Redox-Responsive Reversible Host-Guest System.

J Org Chem

January 2025

School of Pharmaceutical and Chemical Engineering & Institute for Advanced Studies, Taizhou University, 1139 Shifu Avenue, Taizhou 318000, Zhejiang,China.

We report an enhanced recognition and redox-responsive reversible host-guest system based on ester-bearing calix[]phenoxazines. The carbonyl groups, oriented toward the cavity, act as the extra binding sites to enhance the binding affinity, which is confirmed by NMR and FTIR experiments and single-crystal structure analysis. Due to the oxidizable nature of calix[]phenoxazine, a redox-controlled reversible response is established.

Background: With globalization, oculoplastic surgeons must understand the intricate morphological nuances of the periocular region across ethnicities to ensure precise treatment and avoid facial disharmony or dysfunction. Direct comparisons in two-dimensional (2D)-based periocular morphology between studies can be challenging due to the limited number of parameters and complicated variations in equipment, environments, measurement personnel, and methods. Therefore, it is imperative to explore the detailed three-dimensional (3D) periocular morphological disparities between young Caucasian and Chinese populations.

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering/Institute of Clean Energy and Materials/Guangzhou Key Laboratory for Clean Energy and Materials, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, 230 Wai Huan Xi Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510006, People's Republic of China.

Intentional doping plays a pivotal role in customizing metal halides' electronic and optical features. This work manipulates the incorporation and distribution of Mn in Cu(I) halide by controlling the elemental steps involved in the growth-doping kinetics as well as investigates the localized lattice and electronic structures in different doping configurations. Complementary experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that a uniform and relatively high Mn doping level can be achieved by a step-tailored strategy that encompasses reducing the growth rate of the halide matrix, enhancing the surface adsorption of Mn, and facilitating the incorporation of the dopants.

Diversity of lake bacteria promotes human echovirus inactivation.

Appl Environ Microbiol

January 2025

Laboratory of Environmental Virology, Environmental Engineering Institute (IIE), School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC), Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland.

Human enteric viruses can remain infective in surface waters for extended periods of time, posing a public health risk. Microbial activity contributes to the inactivation of waterborne enteric viruses, but while individual bacteria-virus interactions have been characterized, the importance of microbial diversity remains unknown. Here, we experimentally manipulated the diversity of bacterial communities from Lake Geneva across three seasons using a dilution-to-extinction approach and monitored the inactivation and genome decay of echovirus 11, a member of the genus.
