Emerging immersive visual communication technologies require light sources with complex functionality for dynamic control of polarization, directivity, wavefront, spectrum, and intensity of light. Currently, this is mostly achieved by free space bulk optic elements, limiting the adoption of these technologies. Flat optics based on artificially structured metasurfaces that operate at the sub-wavelength scale are a viable solution, however, their integration into electrically driven devices remains challenging.

Impulsive light excitation presents a powerful tool for investigating the interdependent structural and electronic responses in layered two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites. However, detailed understanding of the nonlinear lattice dynamics in these soft hybrid materials remains limited. Here, we explicate the intrinsic strain propagation mechanisms in 2D perovskite single crystals using transient reflection spectroscopy.

Due to the emergence of various new infectious (viral/bacteria) diseases, the remote surveillance of infected persons has become most important, especially if hospitals need to isolate infected patients to prevent the spreading of pathogens to health care personnel. Therefore, we develop a remote health monitoring system by integrating a stretchable asymmetric supercapacitor (SASC) as a portable power source with sensors that can monitor the human physical health condition in real-time and remotely. An abnormal body temperature and breathing rate could indicate a person's sickness/infection status.

To move away from fossil fuels, the electrochemical reaction plays a critical role in renewable energy sources and devices. The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is always coupled with these reactions in devices but suffers from large energy barriers. Thus, it is important for developing efficient OER catalysts with low overpotential.

Defect management strategies are vital for enhancing the performance of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices, such as perovskite-based light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). As additives can fucntion both as acrystallization modifier and/or defect passivator, a thorough study on the roles of additives is essential, especially for blue emissive Pe-LEDs, where the emission is strictly controlled by the -domain distribution of the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP, LAPbX, where L refers to a bulky cation, while A and X are monovalent cation, and halide anion, respectively) perovskite films. Of the various additives that are available, octyl phosphonic acid (OPA) is of immense interest because of its ability to bind with uncoordinated Pb ( notorious for nonradiative recombination) and therefore passivates them.

Porous boron nitride (BN) nanorods, which were synthesized via a one-stage pyrolysis, exhibited excellent catalytic performance for organics' degradation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The origin of the unexpected catalytic function of porous BN nanorods was proposed, in which non-radical oxidation driven by the defects on porous BN dominated the sulfamethoxazole degradation via the generation of singlet oxygen (O). The adsorption energy between PMS and BN was calculated via density functional theory (DFT), and the PMS activation kinetics were further investigated using an electrochemical methodology.

While extensive research has driven the rapid efficiency trajectory noted to date for organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs), their thermal stability remains one of the key issues hindering their commercialization. Herein, a significant reduction in surface defects (a precursor to perovskite instability) could be attained by introducing triphenylphosphine (TPP), an effective Lewis base passivator, to the vulnerable perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD interface. Not only did TPP passivation enable a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.

Extending halide perovskites' optoelectronic properties to stimuli-responsive chromism enables switchable optoelectronics, information display, and smart window applications. Here, we demonstrate a band gap tunability (chromism) via crystal structure transformation from three-dimensional FAPbBr to a ⟨110⟩ oriented FAPbBr structure using a mono-halide/cation composition (FA/Pb) tuning. Furthermore, we illustrate reversible photochromism in halide perovskite by modulating the intermediate phase in the FAPbBr structure, enabling greater control of the optical band gap and luminescence of a ⟨110⟩ oriented mono-halide/cation perovskite.

Chalcogenide semiconductors offer excellent optoelectronic properties for their use in solar cells, exemplified by the commercialization of Cu(In,Ga)Se- and CdTe-based photovoltaic technologies. Recently, several other chalcogenides have emerged as promising photoabsorbers for energy harvesting through the conversion of solar energy to electricity and fuels. The goal of this review is to summarize the development of emerging binary (SbX, GeX, SnX), ternary (CuSnX, CuGeX, CuSbX, AgBiX), and quaternary (CuZnSnX, AgZnSnX, CuCdSnX, CuZnGeX, CuBaSnX) chalcogenides (X denotes S/Se), focusing especially on the comparative analysis of their optoelectronic performance metrics, electronic band structure, and point defect characteristics.

E-waste generated from end-of-life spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is increasing at a rapid rate owing to the increasing consumption of these batteries in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage worldwide. On the one hand, landfilling and incinerating LIBs e-waste poses environmental and safety concerns owing to their constituent materials. On the other hand, scarcity of metal resources used in manufacturing LIBs and potential value creation through the recovery of these metal resources from spent LIBs has triggered increased interest in recycling spent LIBs from e-waste.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have recently shown significant progress with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 20%. However, PeLEDs with pure-red (620-660 nm) light emission, an essential part for full-color displays, remain a great challenge. Herein, a general approach of spacer cation alloying is employed in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPPs) for efficient red PeLEDs with precisely tunable wavelengths.

Heterostructures, combining perovskite nanocrystals (PNC) and chalcogenide quantum dots, could pave a path to optoelectronic device applications by enabling absorption in the near-infrared region, tailorable electronic properties, and stable crystal structures. Ideally, the heterostructure host material requires a similar lattice constant as the guest which is also constrained by the synthesis protocol and materials selectivity. Herein, we present an efficient one-pot hot-injection method to synthesize colloidal all-inorganic cesium lead halide-lead sulfide (CsPbX (X = Cl, Br, I)-PbS) heterostructure nanocrystals (HNCs) via the epitaxial growth of the perovskite onto the presynthesized PbS nanocrystals (NCs).

Antimony sulfoselenide (Sb (S,Se) ) is a promising photoabsorber for stable and high efficiency thin film photovoltaics (PV). The unique quasi-1D (Q1D) crystal structure gives Sb (S,Se) intriguing anisotropic optoelectronic properties, which intrinsically require the optimization of crystal growth orientation, especially for electronic devices with vertical charge transport such as solar cells. Although the efficiency of Sb (S,Se) solar cells has been improved greatly through optimizing the material quality, the fundamental issue of crystal orientation control in polycrystalline films remains unsolved, resulting in charge carrier recombination losses in the device.

Hybrid metal halide perovskites exhibit well-defined semiconducting properties and efficient optoelectronic performance considering their soft crystal structure and low-energy lattice motions. The response of such a crystal lattice to light-induced charges is a fundamental question, for which experimental insight into ultrafast time scales is still sought. Here, we use infrared-activated vibrations (IRAV) of the organic components within the hybrid perovskite lattice as a sensitive probe for local structural reorganizations after photoexcitation, with femtosecond resolution.
