In the past few years, a large variety of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with vivid and well-distinguished color hues have been demonstrated. In this Perspective, we compare different strategies employed to realize colorful PSCs both in opaque and semitransparent designs. The approaches used to modulate the PSCs' colorful appearance can be divided into two main categories: the first one based on the modifications of their internal layers (, absorber, electron- and/or hole-transporting layers, and electrodes), while the second is based on the addition of external colored or nanostructured films to the standard PSCs.

Origins of the long-range exciton diffusion in perovskite nanocrystal films: photon recycling vs exciton hopping.

Light Sci Appl

Division of Physics and Applied Physics, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), 21 Nanyang Link, Singapore, 637371, Singapore.

The outstanding optoelectronic performance of lead halide perovskites lies in their exceptional carrier diffusion properties. As the perovskite material dimensionality is reduced to exploit the quantum confinement effects, the disruption to the perovskite lattice, often with insulating organic ligands, raises new questions on the charge diffusion properties. Herein, we report direct imaging of >1 μm exciton diffusion lengths in CHNHPbBr perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) films.

Nanyang Technological University, Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N), SCARCE Laboratory 637459, Singapore; Université Paris-Saclay, CEA, CNRS, NIMBE, 91191, Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Electronic address:

Removal of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) from polymers before disposal or recycling will alleviate negative environmental effects and ensure safe usage of recycled products. Extraction of BFRs in supercritical CO is appealing but also presents challenges to industries due to limited solubility and lack of kinetic studies. For a more comprehensive evaluation of supercritical extraction potentialities, we (i) developed an on-line pressure apparatus that is compatible with both the FTIR and UV-vis spectrometers to enable kinetic and thermodynamic studies; (ii) studied kinetic extraction involving three conventional and two novel BFRs as well as three typical polymeric matrix.

Nano-layered solid-contact potassium-selective electrodes (K-ISEs) were explored as model ion-selective electrodes for their practical use in clinical analysis. The ultra-thin ISEs ought to be manufactured in a highly reproducible manner, potentially making them suitable for mass production. Thus, their development is pivotal towards miniaturised sensors with simplified conditioning/calibration protocols for point-of-care diagnostics.

Soft robotics focuses on mimicking natural systems to produce dexterous motion. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are an attractive option due to their large strains, high efficiencies, lightweight design, and integrability, but require high electric fields. Conventional approaches to improve DEA performance by incorporating solid fillers in the polymer matrices can increase the dielectric constant but to the detriment of mechanical properties.

Sensory information processing in robot skins currently rely on a centralized approach where signal transduction (on the body) is separated from centralized computation and decision-making, requiring the transfer of large amounts of data from periphery to central processors, at the cost of wiring, latency, fault tolerance and robustness. We envision a decentralized approach where intelligence is embedded in the sensing nodes, using a unique neuromorphic methodology to extract relevant information in robotic skins. Here we specifically address pain perception and the association of nociception with tactile perception to trigger the escape reflex in a sensorized robotic arm.

September 2020

Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N), Interdisciplinary Graduate School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 637553, Singapore.

Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have demonstrated great potential as alternative technologies to the currently used lithium-ion batteries on account of the competitive price and low redox potential of potassium which is advantageous to applications in the smart grid. As the critical component determining the energy density, appropriate cathode materials are of vital need for the realization of KIBs. Layered oxide cathodes are promising candidates for KIBs due to high reversible capacity, appropriate operating potential, and most importantly, facile and easily scalable synthesis.

Principal component analysis network (PCANet), as an unsupervised shallow network, demonstrates noticeable effectiveness on datasets of various volumes. It carries a two-layer convolution with PCA as filter learning method, followed by a block-wise histogram post-processing stage. Following the structure of PCANet, extreme learning machine auto-encoder (ELM-AE) variants are employed to replace the PCA's role, which come from extreme learning machine network (ELMNet) and hierarchical ELMNet.

Shallow feed-forward networks are incapable of addressing complex tasks such as natural language processing that require learning of temporal signals. To address these requirements, we need deep neuromorphic architectures with recurrent connections such as deep recurrent neural networks. However, the training of such networks demand very high precision of weights, excellent conductance linearity and low write-noise- not satisfied by current memristive implementations.

Hot carriers perspective on the nature of traps in perovskites.

Nat Commun

June 2020

Division of Physics and Applied Physics, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, 21 Nanyang Link, Singapore, 637371, Singapore.

Amongst the many spectacular properties of hybrid lead halide perovskites, their defect tolerance is regarded as the key enabler for a spectrum of high-performance optoelectronic devices that propel perovskites to prominence. However, the plateauing efficiency enhancement of perovskite devices calls into question the extent of this defect tolerance in perovskite systems; an opportunity for perovskite nanocrystals to fill. Through optical spectroscopy and phenomenological modeling based on the Marcus theory of charge transfer, we uncover the detrimental effect of hot carriers trapping in methylammonium lead iodide and bromide nanocrystals.

To overcome the drawbacks in three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, such as instability, surface hydration, and ion migration, recently researchers have focused on comparatively stable lower-dimensional perovskite derivatives. All-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) perovskites (, CsPbX; X = Cl, Br, I) can be evolved as a high performing material due to their larger exciton binding energy and better structural stability. The clear understanding of carrier recombination process in 0D perovskites is very important for better exploitation in light-emitting devices.

Slow hot carrier cooling in halide perovskites holds the key to the development of hot carrier (HC) perovskite solar cells. For accurate modeling and pragmatic design of HC materials and devices, it is essential that HC temperatures are reliably determined. A common approach involves fitting the high-energy tail of the main photobleaching peak in a transient absorption spectrum with a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.

Here, we experimentally observe ultrafast relaxation of free carriers in 20 ps due to the quantum confinement of free carriers in a self-assembled QW structures that form excitons.

A controllable electronic manipulation in a frustrated magnetic system such as solution-based two-dimensional (2D) all-inorganic perovskites offers a possible route for their integrations with electronic and magnetic devices for their advanced applications. Here, we perform element-specific investigations of an emergent class of quasi-2D all-inorganic perovskites CsCuClBr with (0 ≤ ≤ 4) using a combination of synchrotron-radiation photoelectron techniques. Recently, semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) have received overwhelming attention due to their potential applications in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and in tandem solar cells. The best ST-PSCs, despite the high efficiency achieved, still show limited bifacial properties and lack esthetic properties. Here, we have demonstrated efficient bifacial colorful ST-PSCs using copper thiocyanate (CuSCN), as a hole-transporting material, in an n-i-p architecture.
