Aim: To investigate the biocompatibility and bacterial adhesion properties of light responsive materials (LRM) and analyze the feasibility and biosafety of employing LRM in the preparation of accommodative intraocular lenses (AIOLs).
Methods: Employing fundamental experimental research techniques, LRM with human lens epithelial cells (hLECs) and human retinal pigment epithelium cells (ARPE-19 cells) were co-cultured. Commercially available intraocular lenses (IOLs) were used as controls to perform cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), cell staining under varying light intensities, cell adhesion and bacterial adhesion experiments.

Background: Endophthalmitis is an ophthalmologic emergency requiring accurate and rapid diagnosis for treatment. Currently, the diagnosis commonly relies on culture and molecular biology, which falls short of clinical rapid diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a self-build Microfluidic Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) System for rapidly identifying potential pathogens of endophthalmitis.

Background And Objectives: Endophthalmitis is a type of eye inflammation that affects all structures of the eye and is generally of infectious origin. In cases recalcitrant to intravitreal treatment or posterior vitrectomy, evisceration or enucleation are the preferable options. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement has stood out as an implant in other areas of medicine due to its great stability and healing.

Background: Since May 2007, topical levofloxacin 0.5% ophthalmic solution for prophylaxis of postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) in cataract surgery has been reimbursable in Taiwan.
Aim: We used the National Health Insurance Research Database to estimate the practice of levofloxacin in cataract surgery from 2001 to 2019 and compared the POE rates before and after the introduction of levofloxacin using interrupted time series (ITS) analysis.

Background: The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends a screening dilated retinal examination by an ophthalmologist for all patients with candidemia. Conversely, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends against routine screening in patients with candidemia without symptoms.
Methods: In a collaborative effort between infectious diseases and ophthalmology, we examined the incidence of ocular complications in 308 patients with candidemia and subsequently measured the rate of fundoscopic examinations, risk factors for ocular complications, management changes, and outcomes.

Bartonella henselae is a Gram-negative bacillus, mainly parasitizing on cats. When a child is scratched by a cat, they may present with the disease symptoms including regional lymphadenopathy, malaise, fever, and splenomegaly, which is known as cat-scratch disease (CSD). Ocular manifestations occur in 5-10% of patients with CSD.

Purpose: Acute postoperative endophthalmitis (APE) is a rare but severe complication of cataract surgery. During the most recent decades, the use of povidone-iodine (PVI) before surgery combined with intracameral cefuroxime has drastically reduced the incidence of endophthalmitis. The goal of this study is to describe the changes in endophthalmitis rates after cataract surgery over the past two decades in a large tertiary ophthalmology center.

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the mycobacterial load using a mobile laminar airflow (LAF) device in an IVI-dedicated outpatient clean room (OCR) without ventilation systems and in a hospital-based operating theatre (HOT).
Methods: This case-control study was conducted in 2 different settings: OCR and HOT during a series of intravitreal injections (IVIs). The Air Microbial analysis was performed using a Surface Air System instrument at three different moments during the IVI sessions in both settings: at the operative site (OS), four meters from the OS (DOS) and in the disinfection room (DR).

Background: Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus fumigatus are commonly involved in fungal endophthalmitis. However, other less pathogenic species of the genus are also causal agents of opportunistic infections. Aspergillus hiratsukae, a species within Aspergillus section Fumigati, is an uncommon fungus responsible for a few infectious cases worldwide.

Topic: To compare face masking protocols for post-intravitreal injection endophthalmitis (PIE) prophylaxis.
Clinical Relevance: Though mask mandates are lifted, ophthalmologists may question whether continued investment into face masks will influence their PIE rate.
Methods/literature Reviewed: We included comparative studies of PIE incidence by masking policy (i.
Introduction: Infectious endophthalmitis, a vision-threatening disease caused by exogenous or endogenous microbial invasion, may require vitrectomy with or without silicone oil (SO) tamponade in severe cases. SO antimicrobial effects have been suggested but not demonstrated in an in vitro environment mimicking real clinical conditions. Using an in vitro intraocular tamponade model, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of SO against 11 bacterial and 1 fungal species, including antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is a rare condition involving an abnormal communication between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. We present a unique case of posttraumatic unilateral CCF initially misdiagnosed as a corneal melt with iris prolapse and orbital cellulitis. The patient, a 25-year-old male, experienced swelling, bleeding, and sudden vision loss in the affected eye following a fall.

Blood stream infections (BSI) are common in patients with kidney disease. Metastatic foci of infections are one of the known complications of BSI. Endophthalmitis which is defined as infection and inflammation of the inner coats of the eye ball and intraocular fluids (aqueous and vitreous), is one such focus.

X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is an inherited retinal disorder due to mutations in retinoschisin 1, characterized by impaired central vision secondary to parafoveal cystic cavities and visual field loss by splitting through the retinal nerve fibre layer in the peripheral retina. It is the leading cause of juvenile macular degeneration in males, and currently there is no approved treatment but carbonic anhydrase inhibitors can be used. A retrospective review of the medical records of 17 children with confirmed XLRS seen in the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department of La Paz University Hospital from the 1st of January 2009 to the 1st of June of 2023 was conducted.

is a zoonotic pathogen commonly found in pigs, capable of causing disease in humans when in contact with contaminated pigs or pork products. The most common presentation in humans is meningitis, although it can also manifest as sepsis, arthritis, endocarditis, or endophthalmitis. In Europe, most cases are described as occupational disease related to pig farming or raw pork handling.

Bacterial endogenous endophthalmitis is caused by a breach of the blood-ocular barrier by pathogens originating from distant sites. It is a rare cause of endophthalmitis and can lead to devastating outcomes without prompt and adequate treatment. We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with a history of type II diabetes mellitus who experienced an episode of acute myocardial infarction complicated by an acute exacerbation of chronic kidney disease, catheter-related infection, bloodstream infection, bacterial endocarditis, and bilateral endogenous endophthalmitis confirmed by blood culture and bilateral vitreous culture showing growth of methicillin-sensitive (MSSA).

Background: Monitoring for potential inflammatory events following intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial factor (VEGF) injection is crucial with the use of new agents such as aflibercept 8 mg. Despite a safety profile comparable to aflibercept 2 mg in pivotal and phase 3 studies, reporting such cases in clinical practice helps evaluate potential risk of these agents.
Case Presentation: In this case series, a cluster of 8 patients manifesting acute intraocular inflammation (IOI) after intravitreal aflibercept 8 mg injection at three different centers are described.
