Background And Objectives: Endophthalmitis is a type of eye inflammation that affects all structures of the eye and is generally of infectious origin. In cases recalcitrant to intravitreal treatment or posterior vitrectomy, evisceration or enucleation are the preferable options. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement has stood out as an implant in other areas of medicine due to its great stability and healing.

Purpose: Acute postoperative endophthalmitis (APE) is a rare but severe complication of cataract surgery. During the most recent decades, the use of povidone-iodine (PVI) before surgery combined with intracameral cefuroxime has drastically reduced the incidence of endophthalmitis. The goal of this study is to describe the changes in endophthalmitis rates after cataract surgery over the past two decades in a large tertiary ophthalmology center.

Postoperative endophthalmitis is a bacterial infection that most often occurs acutely a few days after surgery. Any postoperative inflammation should raise the suspicion of acute endophthalmitis, especially if vitritis is present. Suspicion of the diagnosis must be combined with emergent therapeutic management in order to improve the anatomical and functional prognosis.
