Hip arthroplasty is a common elective surgery worldwide, with rising numbers due to demographic changes and an emphasis on maintaining physical activity in the elderly. The development of new implant designs, especially shorter uncemented stems, has contributed to the advancement of minimally invasive implantation techniques. However, the long-term in vivo behaviour of these implants, particularly regarding subsidence, stability, and stress shielding, remains to be fully understood.

Article Synopsis
  • Porphyrias are rare genetic disorders caused by mutations that lead to a deficiency in enzymes responsible for heme biosynthesis, resulting in toxic compound accumulation and various symptoms.
  • Variegate porphyria, a type of acute hepatic porphyria, is linked to a mutation in the PPOX gene and can be triggered by factors like stress, drugs, or fasting, causing severe neurological issues.
  • A case study of a 46-year-old woman who developed severe symptoms after gastric bypass surgery highlights the importance of recognizing porphyria symptoms before surgical interventions to prevent serious complications.

Background: In hospitalized patients with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), intravenous (IV) empiric antibiotic treatment is initiated. The best time point for switching from IV to oral treatment is unknown. We used an algorithm-based decision tree for the switch from IV to oral antibiotics within 48 hours and aimed to investigate the treatment outcome of this concept.

Calciprotein particle maturation time (T50) in serum is a novel measure of individual blood calcification propensity. To determine the clinical relevance of T50 in renal transplantation, baseline serum T50 was measured in a longitudinal cohort of 699 stable renal transplant recipients and the associations of T50 with mortality and graft failure were analyzed over a median follow-up of 3.1 years.

The intracellular availability of glucocorticoids is regulated by the enzymes 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (HSD11B1) and 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 (HSD11B2). The activity of HSD11B1 is measured in the urine based on the (tetrahydrocortisol+5α-tetrahydrocortisol)/tetrahydrocortisone ((THF+5α-THF)/THE) ratio in humans and the (tetrahydrocorticosterone+5α-tetrahydrocorticosterone)/tetrahydrodehydrocorticosterone ((THB+5α-THB)/THA) ratio in mice. The cortisol/cortisone (F/E) ratio in humans and the corticosterone/11-dehydrocorticosterone (B/A) ratio in mice are markers of the activity of HSD11B2.
