Pulmonary endothelial cell (EC) activation is a key factor in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In sepsis, increased glycolysis leads to lactate buildup, which induces lysine lactylation (Kla) on histones and other proteins. However, the role of protein lactylation in EC dysfunction during sepsis-induced ARDS remains unclear.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a complex and serious condition characterized by widespread activation of the coagulation cascade, resulting in both thrombosis and bleeding. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of DIC, emphasizing its clinical significance and the need for improved management strategies. We explore the primary causes of DIC, including sepsis, trauma, malignancies, and obstetric complications, which trigger an overactive coagulation response.

Introduction: Massive hemorrhage calls for massive transfusions (MTs) to maintain adequate hemostasis. Massive transfusion protocols (MTPs) are the appropriate treatment strategy for such patients replacing conventional use of crystalloids. These help in standardizing and optimizing the delivery of blood components in a well-balanced ratio.

Venture capital (VC) plays a critical role in driving advancements in medical device innovations through its investment in early-stage companies. However, a concerning trend has emerged over the past decade: a decline in interest from VC funds toward investing in medical devices. Particularly alarming is the more than 50% decrease in investment in early-stage medical device development over the span of 2 decades.

Rationale & Objective: Engaging patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) in goals of care (GOC) conversations is essential to align life-sustaining treatments with patient preferences. This pilot study described the feasibility of engaging older Veterans with advanced CKD in GOC conversations via telehealth by (1) comparing patient characteristics, including life-sustaining treatment note completion rates and preferences by visit modality, and (2) exploring Veteran and clinician perspectives surrounding telehealth GOC conversations.
Study Design: Mixed-method convergent design including a prospective, quantitative observational cohort analysis (n = 40) and qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 4 clinicians and 11 Veterans.

Water pollution, oxidative stress and the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains are significant global threats that require urgent attention to protect human health. Nanocomposites that combine multiple metal oxides with carbon-based materials have garnered significant attention due to their synergistic physicochemical properties and versatile applications in both environmental and biomedical fields. In this context, the present study was aimed at synthesizing a ternary metal-oxide nanocomposite consisting of silver oxide, copper oxide, and zinc oxide (ACZ-NC), along with a multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified ternary metal-oxide nanocomposite (MWCNTs@ACZ-NC).

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have served as essential antimicrobial agents for nearly a century due to their rapid membrane-disrupting action. However, the emergence of bacterial resistance and environmental concerns have driven interest in alternative designs, such as "soft QACs", which are designed for enhanced biodegradability and reduced resistance potential. In this study, we explored the antibacterial properties and mechanisms of action of our newly synthesized soft QACs containing a labile amide bond within a quinuclidine scaffold.

Abdominal pain is a common presenting symptom among patients visiting the hospital. A wide range of differential diagnoses are associated with this presentation, some of which are more uncommon than others, and require a higher degree of clinical suspicion and radiological excellence to diagnose. Although clinicians rely on physical assessment, examining a patient who is agitated and non-cooperative sometimes limits the physical exam findings, making these diagnoses even more challenging.
