Numerous Atlantic basin tropical cyclones have recently developed prior to the official start of hurricane season, including several pre-season landfalls in the continental United States. Pre-season and early-season tropical cyclones disproportionately affect populated landmasses, often producing outsized precipitation impacts. Here we show a significant trend towards earlier onset of tropical cyclone activity in the North Atlantic basin, with threshold dates of the first three percentiles of accumulated cyclone energy shifting earlier at a rate exceeding five days decade since 1979, even correcting for biases in climatology due to increased detection of short-lived storms.

We report the first results of a search for leptophobic dark matter (DM) from the Coherent-CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) liquid argon (LAr) detector. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the magnetospheric boundary plays a crucial role in solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, particle entry, and energization. The full extent of its impact has remained an open question due, in part, to global models without sufficient resolution to capture waves at higher latitudes. Aqueous multi-phase processes are significant contributors to organic aerosol (OA) mass in the atmosphere. This study characterizes the formation of water-soluble organic matter during the winter in the eastern United States through simultaneous measurements of water-soluble organic carbon in the gas and particle phases (WSOC and WSOC, respectively). The formation of secondary WSOC occurred primarily through two pathways: (1) absorptive partitioning of oxygenated organics to the bulk OA and (2) aqueous phase processes.

We hypothesized that vaccination of hospital staff and patients, type of surgery, and length of stay, would affect willingness to undergo a surgical procedure. 2006 adult participants in the United States were recruited electronically using Amazon's ® Mechanical Turk ® and answered a 26-item survey in English about hypothetical surgery, manipulating requirements for: staff vaccination, patient vaccination, surgical urgency, and time in hospital.

Meta-analyses suggest that student learning outcomes (SLOs) are comparable across modalities of instruction. None of these studies examined how unmet student expectations (here, unexpected changes in course delivery) might increase perceptions of student-instructor-university psychological contract breaches (PCBs) and, ultimately, perceived SLOs within and across modalities. Selective binding of amino acids, peptides, and proteins by synthetic molecules and elucidation of the geometry and dynamics of the resulting complexes and their strengths are active areas of contemporary research. In recent work, we analyzed via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations the complexes formed between cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) and three aromatic amino acids: tryptophan (W), phenylalanine (F), and tyrosine (Y). Herein, we continue this line of research by performing MD simulations lasting 100 ns to investigate the formation, stabilities, binding modes, dynamics, and specific host-guest noncovalent interactions contributing to the formation of the binary (1:1) and ternary (2:1) complexes in aqueous solution between W, F, and Y amino acids and cucurbit[8]uril (CB8).

Outdoor air pollution is a complex system that is responsible for the deaths of millions of people annually, yet the integration of interdisciplinary data necessary to assess air quality's multiple metrics is still lacking. This case study integrates atmospheric indicators (concentrations of criteria pollutants including particulate matter and gaseous pollutants), traffic indicators (permanent traffic monitoring station data), and social indicators (community responses in Twitter archives) representing the interplay of the three critical pillars of the United Nations' Triple Bottom Line: environment, economy, and society. During the watershed moment of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in Florida, urban centers demonstrated the gaps and opportunities for understanding the relationships, through correlations rather than causations, between urban air quality, traffic emissions, and public perceptions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the air transport industry, forcing airlines to take measures to ensure the safety of passengers and crewmembers. Among the many protective measures, mask mandate onboard the airplane is an important one, but travelers' mask-wearing intentions during flight remain uninvestigated especially in the US where mask use is a topic of on-going debate.
