Bone implants with biocompatibility and the ability to biomineralize and suppress infection are in high demand. The occurrence of early infections after implant placement often leads to repeated surgical treatment due to the ineffectiveness of antibiotic therapy. Therefore, an extremely attractive solution to this problem would be the ability to initiate bacterial protection of the implant by an external influence.

How people face mortality is a crucial matter for medicine. Yet, there is not a coherent and comprehensive understanding of how people can process the experience such that it is not traumatic. This article offers a "logic model" of how existential maturation occurs, using analogies from cell biology to explain the process.

Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a common complication of several pituitary and hypothalamic disorders and dependent on the onset of disease. It may have severe clinical implications ranging from growth retardation in childhood-onset, to impaired lipid metabolism and increased cardiovascular risk and mortality in adults. GH effectively modulates lipid metabolism at multiple levels and GHD has been associated with an atherogenic lipid profile, that can be reversed by GH replacement therapy.

Introduction: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a debilitating multiorgan disease characterized by recurring flares leading to organ dysfunction, decreased quality of life, and mortality. Glucocorticoids, the standard of care for IgG4-RD, are associated with substantial treatment-related toxicity. Inebilizumab, an antibody directed against CD19, mediates the rapid and durable depletion of CD19 B cells thought to be involved in IgG4-RD pathogenesis.

Background: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is associated with significant pulmonary morbidity. Previous investigation has shown that postnatal inpatient morbidity is linked to diaphragmatic defect size. The objective of this study was to evaluate long-term pulmonary outcomes by CDH study group defect size.

Heterozygous, pathogenic CUX1 variants are associated with global developmental delay or intellectual disability. This study delineates the clinical presentation in an extended cohort and investigates the molecular mechanism underlying the disorder in a Cux1 mouse model. Through international collaboration, we assembled the phenotypic and molecular information for 34 individuals (23 unpublished individuals).

Background: The role of emergency department resuscitative thoracotomy (EDT) in traumatically injured children has not been elucidated. We aimed to perform a systematic review and create evidence-based guidelines to answer the following PICO (population, intervention, comparator, and outcome) question: should pediatric patients who present to the emergency department pulseless (with or without signs of life [SOL]) after traumatic injuries (penetrating thoracic, penetrating abdominopelvic, or blunt) undergo EDT (vs. no EDT) to improve survival and neurologically intact survival?
Methods: Using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology, a group of 12 pediatric trauma experts from the Pediatric Trauma Society, Western Trauma Association, and Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma assembled to perform a systematic review.

The occurrence of immune-evasive SARS-CoV-2 strains emphasizes the importance to search for broad-acting antiviral compounds. Our previous study showed that root extract EPs 7630 has combined antiviral and immunomodulatory properties in SARS-CoV-2-infected human lung cells. Here we assessed effects of EPs 7630 in SARS-CoV-2-infected hamsters, and investigated properties of EPs 7630 and its functionally relevant constituents in context of phenotypically distinct SARS-CoV-2 variants.

This policy statement aims to enhance comfort and increase knowledge of pediatric organ donation and transplantation to the general pediatric community, specifically focusing on the pediatric health care professional and the medical home. The pediatric health care professional will care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents who may become donors or transplant recipients and, thus, is a crucial member of the pediatric patient's care team. Understanding donation, transplantation, and follow-up care are important to primary care engagement.

Distressing intrusive memories of a traumatic event are one of the hallmark symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. Thus, it is crucial to identify early interventions that prevent the occurrence of intrusive memories. Both, sleep and sleep deprivation have been discussed as such interventions, yet previous studies yielded contradicting effects.

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed numerous weaknesses in pandemic preparedness and response, including underfunding, inadequate surveillance, and inequitable distribution of countermeasures. To overcome these weaknesses for future pandemics, WHO released a zero draft of a pandemic treaty in February, 2023, and subsequently a revised bureau's text in May, 2023. COVID-19 made clear that pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response reflect choices and value judgements.

Despite significant advances in infection control guidelines and practices, surgical site infections remain a substantial cause of morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and mortality. The most effective component of SSI reduction strategies is the preoperative administration of intravenous antibiotics; however, systemic antibiotics drug exposure diminishes rapidly and may result in insufficient prophylactic activity against susceptible and resistant SSI pathogens at the wound. D-PLEX (D-PLEX) is an antibiotic-releasing drug (doxycycline) that is supplied as a sterile powder for paste reconstitution with sterile saline.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are intermediate-grade mesenchymal neoplasms commonly characterized by chromosomal rearrangements causing constitutive activation of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) and/or ALK mutations causing reduced sensitivity to ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI). We present a patient with an IMT who initially responded to first-line alectinib, but who later suffered disease relapse and presently survives with moderate residual disease after receiving second-line lorlatinib. Biopsy specimens were analyzed using next generation sequencing (DNA-seq and RNA-seq) and reverse phase protein microarray (RPPA) as part of an institutional Molecular Tumor Board (MTB) study.

Objective: To investigate the frequency and trajectories of individual patients with polyarticular-course juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) achieving novel composite end points on abatacept.
Methods: Data from a clinical trial of subcutaneous abatacept (NCT01844518) and a post hoc analysis of intravenous abatacept (NCT00095173) in patients with polyarticular-course JIA were included. Three end points were defined and evaluated: combined occurrence of low disease activity (LDA) measured by the Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score; 50% improvement in American College of Rheumatology criteria for JIA (ACR50); and patient-reported outcomes.
