Introduction: Research has suggested that health care providers are not immune to implicit and explicit gender bias among their own colleagues and in the treatment of patients. To date, limited research examines gender bias in trainees and how that bias might intersect with patient care. Our study focused on gendered expectations, perceived competence of medical providers, and perceived acceptability of patients who advocate for themselves.

Background: The intersection of the topics of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) bring together two disparate and complex subjects. Recently non-targeted analysis (NTA) for the discovery of novel PFAS in environmental and biological media has been shown to be valuable in multiple applications. Classical targeted analysis for PFAS using LC-MS/MS, though growing in compound coverage, is still unable to inform a holistic understanding of the PFAS burden in most samples.

Article Synopsis
  • DNA damage response mechanisms are crucial for successful gamete formation during meiosis, ensuring proper repair of double-strand breaks (DSBs).
  • The study highlights that while RAD9A-RAD1-HUS1 (the canonical 9-1-1 complex) is important for DSB repair, mammalian meiocytes also use RAD9B and HUS1B as alternative components that can form different 9-1-1 complexes.
  • Disruption of the RAD1 subunit in mice led to severe infertility issues, including poor DSB repair, depletion of germ cells, and defects in key meiotic processes such as homolog synapsis and sex chromosome inactivation.

Information about responses of plants grown from heteromorphic seeds is limited and inconclusive. This is especially true of subtropical halophytes where such studies have yet to be published. Therefore, growth, water-relations, and oxidative stress mitigation of plants germinated from the heteromorphic seeds of the succulent halophyte Arthrocnemum indicum under increasing (0, 300, and 900 mM NaCl) salinity were studied.

The goals of this study were to improve our understanding of the types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) that occur in wastewater from electronics fabrication facilities (fabs) and to assess the relative concentrations of PFAS species. We collected wastewater samples from three fabs in the United States, analyzed the samples by means of high-resolution mass spectrometry, and implemented complementary target and nontarget analyses. Twelve of 25 target PFASs were quantified in at least one sample, and five perfluorocarboxylates and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) were quantified in all samples.

A Genetically Engineered Mouse Model of Malignant Testicular Germ Cell Tumors.

Methods Mol Biol

March 2021

Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.

Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are among the most curable solid cancers and are typically highly responsive to conventional DNA-damaging chemotherapies, even in patients with metastatic disease. It has therefore been of great interest to understand the basis for the unique chemosensitivity of these cancers, which is linked to the DNA damage sensitivity of their cancer stem cells. TGCTs have been difficult to study in the mouse, however, since most of the existing mouse models develop benign teratomas that are unlike the malignant TGCTs that afflict most testicular cancer patients.

Recommendations for peer-to-peer support for NICU parents.

J Perinatol

December 2015

Founder and President, NICU Helping Hands, Fort Worth, TX, USA.

Peer-to-peer support provided by 'veteran' neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) parents to those with current NICU babies is a legitimate and unique form of support that can complement or supplement, but not replace, services provided by professional NICU staff. Peer support can be delivered through hospital- or community-based programs that offer one-to-one in-person or telephone matches, or support groups that meet in-person or via the Internet. Issues in program development, volunteer training and program operation are discussed.

Technological advances have increased our ability to detect a life-threatening, life-limiting or lethal problem early in pregnancy, leaving parents months to anticipate a death or a prematurely born infant. Babies can also be born with unanticipated problems that could lead to death. In either scenario, perinatal palliative care should be offered as a strategy for family support.
