Background: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) perform nasal laryngoscopy (LE) to assess voice and dysphagia-related disorders. The procedural aspects may include the use of topical nasal anaesthesia.

Aims: To explore the practice patterns of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-certified SLPs use of anaesthesia during laryngeal endoscopy procedures in the United States METHODS & PROCEDURES: Data were collected via a brief computerized survey.

Introduction: Continuing professional development (CPD) has become a common strategy to address the gaps in knowledge and competencies during the pandemic. Given the drastic changes in the learning environment, this study explored "technagogy" or teaching with technology in CPD in the health professions.

Methods: A mixed-methods study was used to ascertain the determinants and merits of CPD success from the participants' perspectives (n = 237).

Connecting Auditory-Perceptual Prompts Used in Voice Therapy to Anatomy and Physiology: Application to the Estill Voice Model and the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System.

Purpose: This clinical tutorial will present the concept of applying auditory-perceptual prompts (implicit instruction) typically used in voice therapy to the anatomy and physiology of the voice production system (explicit instruction) via the Estill Voice Model (EVM) and the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS).

Methods: EVM offers an integrated implicit-explicit instructional approach to voice training allowing for isolated practice of vocal structures (explicit) that interact to produce functional voice qualities (implicit), such as modal speech and louder projected voice qualities. In EVM, voice quality is correlated with the specific anatomy and physiologic adjustments via 13 Estill Figures and Options (eg, Larynx Figure has three options: High, Mid, and Low).

Objective: This study aimed to compare vocal tract configurations between speech and twang qualities.

Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from five professional vocalists while producing the sustained vowel /i/. Width and area measurements were obtained from the axial (ie, transverse) images to evaluate oropharyngeal narrowing and aryepiglottic (AES) narrowing.

Evaluation of a New Adolescent Social Communication Assessment: The Transition Pragmatics Interview.

Purpose: This study evaluated the psychometric functioning of a new criterion-referenced assessment of adolescent social communication, the Transition Pragmatics Interview (TPI), based on the synthesis model of pragmatics. Two ways of interpreting item difficulty were explored: (a) as a function of the synthesis model elements of social communication ability that items were designed to assess, and (b) as a function of the developmental level required for a successful response based on an adapted situational-discourse-semantics (SDS) model (Norris & Hoffman, 1993).

Method: Thirty-seven participants aged 14-22 years completed the TPI.

Based on the game's rewards for social interaction and visiting historical sites, we hypothesized that Pokémon Go would enhance players' sense of belonging to their community. We recruited players to participate in a brief, anonymous survey at Pokémon Go events and via social media.

We aimed to evaluate longitudinal trends of racial and ethnic disparities in the utilization of diagnostic angiograms, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) for non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We retrospectively analyzed the National Inpatient Sample (2005-2019). The 15-year period was divided into 5, 3-year periods.

Phonological and Articulatory Deficits in the Production of Novel Signs in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose: Sign language, like spoken language, incorporates phonological and articulatory (or motor) processing components. Thus, the learning of novel signs, like novel spoken word forms, may be problematic for children with developmental language disorder (DLD). In the present work, we hypothesize that phonological and articulatory deficits in novel sign repetition and learning would differentiate preschool-age children with DLD from their typical peers.

Interventions to facilitate improvement in adolescent social communication are more effective when they are tailored to adolescents' individual profiles of ability. Correlating Perceptual Voice Quality in Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia With Computer Vision Assessment of Glottal Geometry Dynamics.

Purpose: This study examined the relationship between voice quality and glottal geometry dynamics in patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD).

Method: An objective computer vision and machine learning system was developed to extract glottal geometry dynamics from nasolaryngoscopic video recordings for 78 patients with ADSD. General regression models were used to examine the relationship between overall voice quality and 15 variables that capture glottal geometry dynamics derived from the computer vision system.
