17α-estradiol has recently been shown to extend healthspan and lifespan in male mice through multiple mechanisms. These benefits occur in the absence of significant feminization or deleterious effects on reproductive function, which makes 17α-estradiol a candidate for translation into humans. However, human dosing paradigms for the treatment of aging and chronic disease are yet to be established.

An overview of nonhuman primates in aging research.

Exp Gerontol

August 2017

Translational Gerontology Branch, National Institute on Aging, NIH Animal Center, 16701, Elmer School Road, Bldg 103, Dickerson, MD 20842, United States; SoBran, Inc., 4000, Blackburn Lane, Suite 100, Burtonsville, MD 20866, United States. Electronic address:

A graying human population and the rising costs of healthcare have fueled the growing need for a sophisticated translational model of aging. Nonhuman primates (NHPs) experience aging processes similar to humans and, as a result, provide an excellent opportunity to study a closely related species. Rhesus monkeys share >92% homology and are the most commonly studied NHP.

Trading or coercion? Variation in male mating strategies between two communities of East African chimpanzees.

Behav Ecol Sociobiol

June 2015

School of Anthropology and Conservation, Marlowe Building, University of Kent, Canterbury, Kent CT2 7NR, UK.

Across taxa, males employ a variety of mating strategies, including sexual coercion and the provision, or trading, of resources. Biological market theory (BMT) predicts that trading of commodities for mating opportunities should exist only when males cannot monopolize access to females and/or obtain mating by force, in situations where power differentials between males are low; both coercion and trading have been reported for chimpanzees (). Here, we investigate whether the choice of strategy depends on the variation in male power differentials, using data from two wild communities of East African chimpanzees (): the structurally despotic Sonso community (Budongo, Uganda) and the structurally egalitarian M-group (Mahale, Tanzania).

Empathy: gender effects in brain and behavior.

Neurosci Biobehav Rev

October 2014

Dipartimento di Neuroscienze, Università di Parma, via Volturno 39, 43125 Parma, Italy. Electronic address:

Evidence suggests that there are differences in the capacity for empathy between males and females. However, how deep do these differences go? Stereotypically, females are portrayed as more nurturing and empathetic, while males are portrayed as less emotional and more cognitive. Some authors suggest that observed gender differences might be largely due to cultural expectations about gender roles.

Resveratrol prevents high fat/sucrose diet-induced central arterial wall inflammation and stiffening in nonhuman primates.

Cell Metab

July 2014

Translational Gerontology Branch, Intramural Research Program, National Institute on Aging, NIH, Suite 100, 251 Bayview Boulevard, Baltimore, MD 21224, USA. Electronic address:

Central arterial wall stiffening, driven by a chronic inflammatory milieu, accompanies arterial diseases, the leading cause of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality in Western society. An increase in central arterial wall stiffening, measured as an increase in aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), is a major risk factor for clinical CV disease events. However, no specific therapies to reduce PWV are presently available.
