Purpose: This study aims to examine disparities among heart transplant recipients in the United States, utilizing the latest data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS).
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of NIS discharge data (2017-2020), focusing on adult end-stage heart failure (ESHF) patients, identified using the ICD-10 CM code I50.84.

Background: Sex-specific risk management may improve outcomes in congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS). We recently developed a prediction score for cardiac events (CEs) and life-threatening events (LTEs) in postadolescent women with LQTS. In the present study, we aimed to develop personalized risk estimates for the burden of CEs and LTEs in male adolescents with potassium channel-mediated LQTS.

A patient self-discontinues arterial line resulting in retention of arterial catheter. The retained catheter was identified on bedside ultrasound and the patient required radial artery exploration and removal of catheter under general anesthesia. We describe potential contributing factors and solutions to catheter design and placement as well as next steps once a retained catheter has been identified.

Background And Objectives: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are prone to symptomatic neurologic complications. Previous studies reported accrual of neural injury starting at early age, even without having symptomatic neurologic events. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of abnormal neurologic findings in patients with SCD with no history of major symptomatic neurologic events.

Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) frequently involves the kidneys, resulting in acute, subacute, or chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patient- and treatment-related factors are associated with the long-term development of CKD. The aim of our study was to examine the association of serum free light chain (FLC) levels, measured at the time of diagnosis of MM, and CKD at subsequent follow-up.

Intrathecal drug delivery systems have been used with increasing frequency in patients with chronic intractable pain. Common complications of intrathecal drug delivery systems include surgical bleeding, spinal cord injury, fractured or migrated catheter, meningitis, pump failure, granuloma formation, cerebral spinal fluid leak, and hygroma formation. We present a rare near-miss case that could have led to the inadvertent filling of an intrathecal pump pocket with a high concentration of narcotic and local anesthetic.

Objective: Despite the publication of various national/international guidelines, several questions concerning the management of patients with asymptomatic (AsxCS) and symptomatic (SxCS) carotid stenosis remain unanswered. The aim of this international, multi-specialty, expert-based Delphi Consensus document was to address these issues to help clinicians make decisions when guidelines are unclear.
Methods: Fourteen controversial topics were identified.

Background: Some glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) are characterized by the presence of gemistocytes (GCs), a unique phenotype of reactive astrocytes. Certain GCs can be identified as neoplastic cells but these cells were also found to be associated with diabetes in non-neoplastic lesions of the central nervous system. Our aim was to find a correlation between insulin - resistance metabolic features and the presence of GCs in patients with newly diagnosed GBM.

Introduction: Carotid bifurcation stenosis may co-exist simultaneously with more proximal common carotid artery (CCA) atherosclerotic plaquing, primarily at the vessel origin in the aortic arch. This scenario is relatively infrequent and its' management does not have quality randomized data to support medical vs surgical treatment. It is logical to treat any high grade common carotid lesions proximal to a carotid bifurcation endarterectomy (CEA) site both to prevent perioperative emboli or thrombosis as well as future embolization.

Introduction: Non-specific pattern (NSP) is a subgroup of preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) that requires a normal total lung capacity measurement. NSP has been historically classified as being an obstructive lung disease pattern. There has been heightened interest and investigation into PRISm recently as it has been associated with an increased likelihood of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The brain plays central role in regulating physiological systems, including the skeleto-muscular and locomotor system. Studies of cortico-muscular coordination have primarily focused on associations between movement tasks and dynamics of specific brain waves. However, the brain-muscle functional networks of synchronous coordination among brain waves and muscle activity rhythms that underlie locomotor control remain unknown.

Background: Native vertebral osteomyelitis (NVO) caused by Staphylococcus aureus is associated with high risk of treatment failure and increased morbidity. The role of rifampin-based therapy for the treatment of this condition is controversial. The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to explore the efficacy and safety of rifampin-based therapy for the treatment of S.

Chronic orofacial pain, by definition, is a pain that can anatomically extend anywhere between the area just under the orbitomeatal line, anterior to the pinnae, and above the neck. It occurs for 15 days or more per month, lasting four or more hours daily, for at least three months. Chronic orofacial pain, including persistent idiopathic facial pain syndrome, can significantly impact patients' quality of life and pose challenges for effective management.

Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH) is a severe form of liver disease caused by alcohol consumption. In the absence of confounding factors, clinical features and laboratory markers are sufficient to diagnose AAH, rule out alternative causes of liver injury and assess disease severity. Due to the elevated mortality of AAH, assessing the prognosis is a radical step in management.
