In this regard, the German Society recommended an otorhinolaryngology resident training plan for Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC) together with the Professional Association of German Otorhinolaryngologists as a suggested guideline for the federal medical associations. In this context, the state medical associations currently work on criteria on the basis of which otorhinolaryngologists and their training institutions can be granted authority for such a certified otorhinolaryngology resident training program.

[Update on Adult-Onset Still's Disease: Diagnosis, Therapy and Guideline].

Adult-onset Still's disease (ASOD) is an autoinflammatory disease of unknown etiology which is pathogenetically characterized by an involvement of the innate immune response with activation of neutrophils and an increased secretion of IL-1, IL-6, IL-18, type 1 interferons. Still's disease may occur at any age with distinct variability in signs and symptoms. Recently, the German Society of Rheumatology (DGRh) has issued an AOSD guideline which recommends diagnosing AOSD based on a characteristic combination of symptoms including intermittent fever, rash, arthralgia, and arthritis after exclusion of infections, neoplasms and other rheumatological conditions.

Midterm Development of Ultrasound-unstable Hip Joints After Overhead Traction and Treatment With Tübingen Splint and Fettweis Plaster: A Radiologic Follow-up Analysis Over 5.5 Years.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the success rate for treatment of ultrasound unstable hips (type D, III and IV) with Fettweis plaster in terms of a midterm follow-up from the very beginning in the neonatal period until the age of 4 to 8 years.

Methods: In total, 69 unstable hips, which were successfully treated with Fettweis plaster and after with a flexion-abduction splint, were included into the study. Hip delvelopment was followed by determining the acetabular index (ACI) on routine pelvic radiographs at the age of 12 to ≤24, 24 to ≤48 and 48 to ≤96 months and the center edge angle on the latter, and classifying both angles according to Tönnis.

Dissecting the genetic heterogeneity of gastric cancer.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is clinically heterogenous according to location (cardia/non-cardia) and histopathology (diffuse/intestinal). We aimed to characterize the genetic risk architecture of GC according to its subtypes. Another aim was to examine whether cardia GC and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) and its precursor lesion Barrett's oesophagus (BO), which are all located at the gastro-oesophageal junction (GOJ), share polygenic risk architecture.

[Structure and establishment of the German Cochlear Implant Registry].

Hearing rehabilitation of patients with severe hearing loss or deafness using cochlear implants (CI) is a very successful but also complex and lifelong process that requires high quality standards for structure, process, and results. Medical registries represent an ideal tool for conducting quality control relevant to care while at the same time collecting scientific data. Therefore, at the initiative of the Executive Committee of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC), a Germany-wide CI registry (the German Cochlear Implant Register, DCIR) was to be established.

Data on the impact of donor-to-recipient laterality on kidney transplantation are lacking. This study evaluated the impact of donor-to-iliac fossa laterality and the site of venous anastomosis on operating time and surgical outcome. This retrospective single-center study analyzed 1262 deceased donor adult kidney transplants into pristine iliac fossa.

Beneficial effects associated to a healthy lifestyle in systemic lupus erythematosus: A cross-sectional study.

Objective: To assess whether a healthy lifestyle is associated to beneficial effects on various systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) health domains.

Methods: In a cross-sectional study, Mediterranean Diet Adherence Score (MEDAS), physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE), and smoking status were assessed by questionnaires, along with clinical parameters and various health domains including Systemic Lupus Disease Activity Score (SLEDAI), Depression Scale (CES-D), Fatigue Severity (FSS), functional status (FFbH), physical and mental quality of life (PCS, MCS). Lifestyle choices were assessed with respect to health domains by linear regression modeling.

Background: Pancreatic cancer has a dismal prognosis. One reason is resistance to cytotoxic drugs. Molecularly matched therapies might overcome this resistance but the best approach to identify those patients who may benefit is unknown.

Modelling of the thyroid hormone synthesis as a part of nonlinear reaction mechanism with feedback.

The synthesis of thyroid hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis was studied. For this purpose, a reaction model for HPT axis with stoichiometric relations between the main reaction species was postulated. Using the law of mass action, this model has been transformed into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations.

Robotic-assisted rectosigmoid resection rectopexy with natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSE): technical notes, short-term results, and functional outcome.

Purpose: Rectosigmoid resection rectopexy has been established as an effective therapy for obstructive defecation syndrome. The addition of the NOSE-technique provides an even less invasive approach avoiding minilaparotomy, but can be technically challenging. Application of a robotic platform has been proposed to facilitate the specimen extraction and fashioning of the intracorporeal anastomosis and has been proven to be effective in left-sided colectomies.

Monitoring disease activity in antineutrophil antibody-associated vasculitis.

Antineutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) comprises a group of multisystem disorders with alternating periods of relapse and remission. Beyond that, a smouldering progress during apparently clinically silent phases often develops. AAVs are subgrouped in microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) and renal limited vasculitis (RLV).

[Conception and implementation of a certification system for quality control of cochlear implant treatment in Germany. German version].

A standardized and structured process is indispensable for optimal hearing rehabilitation with cochlear implants (CI). The Executive Committee of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (DGHNO-KHC), initiated the conception of a certification system and a Whitepaper based on the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) clinical practice guideline (CPG) describing the current medical standards of CI care in Germany. The goal was to independently confirm implementation of this CPG and make this information publicly available.

Evaluation of the guideline-adherence of coronary angiography in patients with suspected chronic coronary syndrome - Results from the German prospective multicentre ENLIGHT-KHK project.

Background: With 900'000 coronary angiographies (CA) per year, Germany has the highest annual per capita volume in Europe. Until now there are no prospective clinical data on the degree of guideline-adherence in the use of CA in patients with suspected chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) in Germany.

Methods: Between January 2019 and August 2021, 458 patients with suspected CCS were recruited in nine German centres.

Background: In high-risk hormone receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HR+/HER2-) early breast cancer (EBC), nanoparticle albumin-bound (nab)-paclitaxel showed promising efficacy versus solvent-based (sb)-paclitaxel in neoadjuvant trials; however, optimal patient and therapy selection remains a topic of ongoing research. Patients And Methods: Within the WSG-ADAPT trial (NCT01779206), high-risk HR+/HER2- EBC patients were randomized to (neo)adjuvant 4× sb-paclitaxel 175 mg/m q2w or 8× nab-paclitaxel 125 mg/m q1w, followed by 4× epirubicin + cyclophosphamide (90 mg + 600 mg) q2w; inclusion criteria: (i) cN0-1, RS 12-25, and post-ET Ki67 >10%; (ii) cN0-1 with RS >25.

Screening for Diabetes Mellitus in Patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa-A Monocentric Study in Germany.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disease that is often associated with metabolic disorders. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a frequent comorbidity in HS. There is currently no established screening for DM in HS patients.

Correlation of head screw lengths in proximal humerus nailing: a CT-based study on 289 cases.

Introduction: Nailing of the proximal humerus is an established method for the treatment of proximal humerus fractures. Choice of the correct length for potentially four proximal locking screws is essential for postoperative outcome. Due to positioning of the patient, intraoperative determination of the correct length of the anteroposterior (AP) screw with the x-ray beam is particularly challenging even for experienced surgeons.

What do windsurfers and kitesurfers in Germany know about surfer's ear and how is it influenced by protective measures?

Objective: This study investigated the frequency of ear canal protection use and looked at its influence on external auditory exostosis severity and knowledge about external auditory exostosis among windsurfers and kitesurfers on the German coast.

Method: This retrospective cross-sectional study interviewed 130 windsurfers and kitesurfers along the German coast on knowledge of external auditory exostosis, exposure time, use of neoprene hoods and earplugs, and otological complaints. Participants underwent bilateral video-otoscopic examination.

Necrosis zone depth after bipolar plasma vaporization and resection in the human prostate.

Objectives: To compare the depth of thermal necrosis after use of bipolar resection and vaporization technique comparing intra-individually bipolar loop and bipolar button electrodes.

Methods: Transurethral resection and vaporization of the prostate was performed in 55 male patients (260 specimens in total). In a standardized procedure, a bipolar resection loop was used for resection, and a bipolar button electrode was used for vaporization.

Improvement of Work Ability After Weight Loss Surgery: Results of a Longitudinal Study of Patients Suffering from Extreme Obesity Before and 4 Years After Bariatric Surgery.

Purpose: Body mass index (BMI) is directly associated with employment status. Our longitudinal prospective study is aimed at ascertaining whether work ability index (WAI) 4 years after surgery remains improved, such as 1 year after surgery, or changes and whether socio-demographic or psycho-social factors influence changes in work ability.
