This study was conducted to examine the relationship between self-neglect and spiritual well-being in older adults. This descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted with 232 older adults. Data were collected using the "Elder Self-Neglect Scale (ESNS)" and "Spiritual Well-Being Scale (FACIT Sp-12).

Background: Domestic violence is one of the most significant global public health priorities. This social problem could be accelerated by global catastrophes such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The structural changes due to the imposition of health measures, combined with personal and social problems, may worsen the situation.

A comprehensive review on oral nicotine pouches: Available scientific evidence and future research needs.

Oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) are an emergent class of tobacco products that, unlike conventional oral smokeless tobacco products, contain a nicotine powder instead of tobacco leaves. This review synthesizes available data on ONPs in key research domains including survey studies, marketing/advertising studies, chemical characterization and in vitro studies, and clinical studies. Research findings relevant for ONP regulations are summarized, including who uses these products and why, how marketing tactics influence appeal and use intentions, what harmful and potentially harmful constituents they contain, and what acute effects they have on humans.

"We Do Not Have a Written Protocol or Flowchart for Intervention": Social Workers' Perceptions and Experiences of Interventions with Older Parents Subjected to Abuse by Adult Offspring with Psychiatric Disorders.

One in six older adults worldwide is subjected to abuse (WHO, 2022), with heightened risk among parents of offspring with mental disorders. This qualitative study explores social workers' experiences in addressing elder abuse by these offspring. Two themes emerged: (1) "The snowball rolls: Unfolding mutual dependency and symbiosis," describing abusive offspring's characteristics and dynamics with aging parents, (2) "For every case, you need to match a tailor-made suit," detailing psychosocial and legal interventions.

Accelerating the pace of elder justice policy to meet the needs of a growing aging population.

Policy measures designed to address elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation date back to decades, including the Older Americans Act of 1965. Over the years, various legislative actions have aimed to address elder mistreatment, culminating in the Elder Justice Act of 2010. Elder abuse, and more specifically financial exploitation, is expected to be a major problem in modern societies as the worldwide population is getting older. Neuropsychological protocols regarding financial capacity assessment are the only available window allowing us to view the cognitive-emotional-behavioral strengths/deficits and vulnerabilities of individuals. Given the paucity of relevant research in Greece in the most vulnerable individuals such as older adults suffering from neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), this systematic review attempts to investigate whether NCDs impair financial capacity and to highlight the most important factors that can predict financial incapacity in Greek older patients and the likelihood of financial abuse.

Where Do We Draw the Line? Perceptions of Abuse of Older Adults and Their Association With Ageism.

Objectives: Violence against older adults is a prevalent global harm, and there is evidence that perceptions of violence toward older adults may affect reporting and intervention. The present study examines the perception of violence against older adults in contrast to violence against other age groups and investigates the role of ageism in those perceptions.

Methods: A total of 290 participants were surveyed and asked to indicate whether they perceived 15 abusive behaviors reflecting physical, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse and neglect to be abuse toward either an older adult (age 60+), adult, or child.

Strengthening the Frontline Response to Elder Abuse: Qualitative Insights From Australian Paramedics.

In this research we identified the training needs of paramedics in Australia regarding elder abuse identification and response. Ten qualitative interviews with paramedics and paramedic educators from each state and territory were conducted between January and March 2024. Participants encountered elder abuse in their professional capacity, often manifesting as neglect although responses were variable, influenced by the jurisdiction, whether the paramedic had specialist training, how much "scene time" was permitted, workload pressures, and if there were clear protocols and guidelines from the ambulance service on how to respond to elder abuse.

This study explored the prevalence, reasons, and predictors of service withdrawal by victims in a sample of 151 older adult abuse cases reported to a specialist social work service. Withdrawal occurred in 34% of cases, after an average of 3 months of contact. The most common reasons for withdrawal were victim denial of abuse and unwillingness to engage with the intervention plan.

Elder abuse in Flanders, Belgium: perspectives from home care nurses.

The present study focuses on elder abuse in the home care setting. The aim of this study was to explore home care nurses' definition, general perspectives and experiences of elder abuse, and the barriers they experience to avoid elder abuse. Individual qualitative interviews were held with Flemish home care nurses ( = 17), employed by a Dutch home nursing organization.

Impact of caregiving stressors on elder abuse-examining the mediating role of caregiver coping strategies.

Objectives: Based on the Caregiving Stress Theory and Cognitive Theory of Stress and Coping, this study examined whether increase in caregiving stressors had an impact on subsequent increase in different forms of elder abuse. Additionally, this study evaluated how these relationships were influenced by caregiver (CG) coping strategies.

Method: A group of 800 Chinese primary family CGs and their care recipients (CRs) with mild cognitive impairment or mild-to-moderate dementia were analyzed.

Relative-to-resident abuse in Norwegian nursing homes: a cross-sectional exploratory study.

Background: In community settings, relatives often provide care to their older family members, which is sometimes perceived as a high burden, overwhelming and stressful, contributing to an increased risk of elder abuse. In most countries, relatives have no legal obligation to provide care when family members are admitted to nursing homes; nevertheless, studies have shown that relatives continue to provide emotional, instrumental, and personal care after admission, often related to the understaffing and high workload of nursing staff. Despite the growing interest in elder abuse in nursing homes, most studies have concentrated on the abuse perpetrated by nursing staff or co-residents, but few studies have explored the abuse that relatives may perpetrate.

Older adults who use drugs: an examination of policy and preparedness in nursing facilities.

Currently, over 5.7 million adults 65+ are projected to have a SUD, and the number of fatal overdose deaths among older adults is rising in both community and facility settings. This exploratory study involved surveys of 37 nursing facilities (NF) in Kentucky in order to identify current admission practices to screen, prevent, and/or address resident substance use.

Elder abuse in the transgender community of Pakistan: A clandestine issue.

Transgender is a broad term that includes people whose gender identity, gender expression, and behavior are discordant with those typically associated with the sex assigned at birth. They are subject to violence, poverty, human rights violations, socioeconomic inequalities, a lack of education, and unemployment. The struggle rises with increasing age, and the elderly community suffers abuse, financial exploitation, physical injuries, cognitive decline, and mental health issues and is denied healthcare.

Objectives: Resident-to-resident aggression (RRA) in long-term care facilities is gaining recognition as a serious problem. Racial/ethnic conflict may be a contributing factor to RRA incidents, but it remains insufficiently studied. Our goal was to explore overt racial/ethnic conflict in RRA.

Transforming learning for adult protective services caseworker certification training: program evaluation of simulation training.

This study assesses the first statewide program to provide simulation training conducted via videoconference to all new caseworkers. The simulation training in Illinois was conducted at a mock house. A mock family played by standardized clients is physically present, and trainees participate remotely.

Codesigning training for health providers to improve detection and response to elder abuse.

Background And Objectives: Screening for elder abuse can improve detection, but many health providers lack the necessary skills and confidence. To address this, training for health providers on elder abuse screening was co-designed as part of a trial aimed at improving elder abuse detection and response.

Research Design And Methods: Between March and April 2023, 7 health providers and 10 older people and family carers participated in two national Australian online codesign workshops.

The Implementation of the Advocacy Intervention for Midlife and Older Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Midlife and older women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) often have less access to supports and services than younger women. There is far less focus on research and supports for midlife and older women compared to younger women experiencing IPV, and often, neither elder abuse nor IPV services meet their needs. Few interventions are available to meet the needs of midlife and older women.
