Actinic keratosis (AK) are common lesions in light-skinned individuals that can potentially progress to cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Both conditions may be associated with significant morbidity and constitute a major disease burden, especially among the elderly. To understand the importance of terrestrial solar exposure on human skin, not only individual spectral components need to be considered in biomedical studies, but also the relevance of the combined action profile of the complete solar spectrum (cSS) must be established. We therefore developed a novel irradiation device that combines the emission of four individual lamps (UVB, UVA, VIS and nIR) to achieve exposure from 280 to 1400 nm with individual controllable lamps. The integrated irradiance of each spectral band is similar to the solar spectrum.

Up to 40% of advance lung, melanoma and breast cancer patients suffer from brain metastases (BM) with increasing incidence. Here, we assessed whether circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood can serve as a disease surrogate, focusing on CD44 and CD74 expression as prognostic markers for BM. We show that a size-based microfluidic approach in combination with a semi-automated cell recognition system are well suited for CTC detection in BM patients and allow further characterization of tumor cells potentially derived from BM.

We here present the spontaneously immortalised cell line, HaSKpw, as a novel model for the multistep process of skin carcinogenesis. HaSKpw cells were established from the epidermis of normal human adult skin that, without crisis, are now growing unrestricted and feeder-independent. At passage 22, clonal populations were established and clone7 (HaSKpwC7) was further compared to the also spontaneously immortalized HaCaT cells.

Background: Cardioprotective interventions-such as pharmacological postconditioning-are a promising strategy to reduce deleterious consequences of ischemia and reperfusion injury (I/RI) in the heart, especially as timing and onset of myocardial infarction are unpredictable. Pharmacological postconditioning by treatment with dexmedetomidine (Dex), an α2-adrenoreceptor agonist, during reperfusion protects hearts from I/RI, independently of time point and duration of application during the reperfusion phase. The mitochondrial ATP-sensitive K (mKATP) and mitochondrial large-conductance calcium-sensitive potassium channel (mBKCa) play a pivotal role in mediating this cardioprotective effect.

Ramelteon is a Melatonin 1 (MT1)-and Melatonin 2 (MT2)-receptor agonist conferring cardioprotection by pharmacologic preconditioning. While activation of mitochondrial calcium-sensitive potassium (mK)-channels is involved in this protective mechanism, the specific upstream signaling pathway of Ramelteon-induced cardioprotection is unknown. The combination of liquid biomarkers from a single blood tube can provide more comprehensive information on tumor development and progression in cancer patients compared to single analysis. Here, we evaluated whether a combined analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), and circulating cell-free microRNA (miRNA) in total plasma and extracellular vesicles (EV) from the same blood sample is feasible and how the results are influenced by the choice of different blood tubes. Our insights into the molecular pathogenesis of uterine smooth muscle tumors have improved significantly. Accordingly, in the present review, we advocate a more refined risk assessment for patients considering surgical removal of fibroids or hysterectomy, respectively, requiring morcellation. For this procedure, the risk estimates given for the iatrogenic spread of a previously unexpected malignancy considerably vary among different studies.

Methods: In 2016, a total of 485 individuals were classified as outdoor workers in accordance with ISCO-08 and asked about exposure time, prevalence of sunburn, and personal sun-protective measures on a sunny summer day.

A 50 year old woman underwent laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy because of symptomatic fibroids. Histologic examination of samples obtained after morcellation revealed typical uterine leiomyomas in all samples investigated. 28 and 47 months later, respectively, the patient presented with peritoneal spreading of nodules that were surgically removed and histologically classified as leiomyosarcoma.

Are tanning salons in compliance with German law? An evaluation based on a nationwide representative survey.

Background: Given the evidence for increased skin cancer risk due to the sunbed use, a regulation of hazardous artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVR regulation) was passed in Germany in 2012. The aim of this study was to explore the advisory services in tanning studios as reported by sunbed users and to evaluate the information provided by the personnel of tanning salons after the UVR regulation was enacted.

Methods: The first wave of the representative National Cancer Aid Monitoring on Sunbed Use included a subgroup of 357 German citizens between 14 and 45 years who had used sunbeds since the UVR regulation was implemented.

Unlabelled: The continued high prevalence of allergic diseases in Western industrialized nations combined with the limited options for causal therapy make evidence-based primary prevention necessary. The recommendations last published in the S3-guideline on allergy prevention in 2009 have been revised and a consensus reached on the basis of an up-to-date systematic literature search. Evidence was sought for the period between May 2008 and May 2013 in the Cochrane and MEDLINE electronic databases, as well as in the reference lists of recent review articles.
