Article Synopsis
  • The study compares two surgical approaches for treating pilonidal sinus abscesses: early intervention (unroofing-curettage) versus elective surgery (Karydakis method) after conventional treatment.
  • Data from 53 patients treated between January 2012 and March 2013 were analyzed to compare factors like age, gender, complications, recurrence, and healing time.
  • Results showed no significant differences in complications or recurrence rates, but the Karydakis method had a significantly shorter treatment duration, making it a more comfortable option for patients.

Effect of carnosine supplementation on apoptosis and irisin, total oxidant and antioxidants levels in the serum, liver and lung tissues in rats exposed to formaldehyde inhalation.

Peptides

February 2015

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry (Firat Hormones Research Group), Medical School, Firat University, 23119 Elazig, Turkey. Electronic address:

The main objective of the study has been to show whether carnosine has positive effects on liver and lung tissues of rats exposed to a range of formaldehyde concentrations, and to explore how irisin expression and antioxidant capacity are altered in these tissues by carnosine supplementation. Sprague-Dawley type male rats were divided into 8 groups with 6 animals in each: (I) Control; no chemical supplementation); (II) sham (100mg/kg/day carnosine); (III) low dose formaldehyde (LDFA) for 5 days/week; (IV) LDFA for 5 days/week and carnosine); (V) moderate dose formaldehyde (MDFA) for 5 days/week); (VI) MDFA for 5 days/week and carnosine; (VII) high dose formaldehyde (HDFA) for 5 days/week; (VIII) and HDFA for 5 days/week and carnosine. Sham and control groups were exposed to normal air.

December 2014

Department of Otolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, Fırat University, Elazig, Turkey.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate any potential effects of phototherapy on cochlear function in newborns using transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs).

Methods And Materials: Fifty-seven newborns, undergoing phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia without any other risk factors, and a control group of 53 healthy newborns, were administered the TEOAE test prior to and following phototherapy. In the newborns undergoing phototherapy, otoacoustic emission (OAE) measurements obtained at baseline and following phototherapy were compared.

Objective: The goal of this study was to analyze magnetic resonance imaging findings of gamma-amino butyric acid and gamma deuteroxy sodium butyrate and to evaluate possible "in vitro" and "in vivo" areas of use.

Materials And Methods: Materials used included gamma-amino butyric acid and gamma deuteroxy sodium butyrate which is formed by the replacement of the deuteroxy group. An amino group in the gamma position of gamma-amino butyric acid was evaluated with a standard magnetic resonance device with the power of 1.

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate whether there were any associations between the T102C and 1438 A/G polymorphisms of the 5-HT2A receptor gene and schizophrenia. We conducted a case-control study of the T102C and 1438 A/G polymorphisms in Turkish patients.

Methods: We compared genotypes and allele frequencies of T102C and 1438 A/G polymorphisms of 5-HT2A receptor gene in 102 patients with schizophrenia diagnosed, according to DSM-IV, and 107 healthy controls.

Irisin was first identified in skeletal muscle cells, but its precise location has not yet been demonstrated, and there is limited information about irisin protein in other human and rat tissues. The present immunohistochemical study was undertaken to screen skeletal muscle and other tissues for irisin immunoreactivity. İrisin staining was found in the brain (neurons and neuroglia), cardiac and skeletal muscle (fibers) and skin (sebaceous glands) tissues in male rats.

Background: A protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 22 (PTPN22) C1858T gene polymorphism has been reported to be associated with both Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) separately. However, no study has been conducted to explore the C1858T polymorphism in T2DM and HT coexistent cases up to now.

Aims: The study aimed to determine whether a relationship exists or not between the PTPN22 C1858T polymorphism and this coexistent patient group.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to detect additional findings in whole body FDG-PET/CT scan including the brain, calvarium, and scalp (compared to starting from the base of the skull) in cancer patients and to determine contributions of these results to tumor staging and treatment protocols.

Materials And Methods: We noted whether the findings related to the brain, calvarium, and scalp in 1359 patients had a potential to modify staging of the disease, chemotherapy protocol, radiotherapy protocol, and surgical management. We identified rates of metastatic findings on the brain, calvarium, and scalp according to the tumor types on FDG-PET/CT scanning.
