Vascular calcification is the abnormal deposition of calcium phosphate complexes in blood vessels, which is regarded as the pathological basis of multiple cardiovascular diseases. The flowing blood exerts a frictional force called shear stress on the vascular wall. Blood vessels have different hydrodynamic properties due to discrepancies in geometric and mechanical properties.

Sustained inflammatory invasion leads to joint damage and progressive disability in several autoimmune rheumatic diseases. In recent decades, targeting M1 macrophage polarization has been suggested as a promising therapeutic strategy for autoimmune arthritis. P300/CBP-associated factor (PCAF) is a histone acetyltransferase (HAT) that exhibits a strong positive relationship with the proinflammatory microenvironment.

Background: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune skin-blistering disease. Systemic corticosteroids remain the first line treatment for moderate-to-severe BP with the potential for severe adverse events. Dupilumab has emerged as an alternative option for BP patients.

Background: Studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are found to be hypoxia-regulated lncRNAs in cancer. Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and despite early surgical removal, has a poor prognosis and a high recurrence rate. Thus, we aimed to identify subtype classifiers and construct a prognostic risk model using hypoxia-associated long noncoding RNAs (hypolncRNAs) for LUAD.

Therapeutic silencing of lncRNA RMST alleviates cardiac fibrosis and improves heart function after myocardial infarction in mice and swine.

Theranostics

July 2023

Translational Medical Center for Stem Cell Therapy & Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, Shanghai 200123, China.

Cardiac fibrosis is an adverse consequence of aberrant fibroblast activation and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition following myocardial infarction (MI). Recently, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to participate in multiple cardiac diseases. However, the biological functions of lncRNA rhabdomyosarcoma 2-associated transcript (RMST) in cardiac fibrosis remain largely unknown.

Background: Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) and vertebral endplate Modic changes (MCs) are common lumbar degenerative phenotypes related to low back pain (LBP). Dyslipidemia has been linked to LBP but its associations with IDD and MCs have not been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to address the possible link between dyslipidemia, IDD and MCs in the Chinese population.

Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP), one of the most common and serious adverse effects associated with glucocorticoid administration, manifests as decreased bone formation and increased bone resorption, eventually culminating in bone loss. Galangin (GAL) is a flavonoid extracted from the medicinal herbal galangal that possesses a variety of pharmacological activities and can inhibit osteoclastogenesis. However, the effects of GAL on GIOP remain unclear.

Background: The roles of Connexin43 (Cx43) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) microenviroment remains to be poorly defined.

Methods: The expression profile, prognosis and immune analysis of Cx43 in various cancers, particularly in ccRCC were performed using TCGA database, and various biological function assays were applied to explore the physiological role of Cx43 and tangeretin in ccRCC. Western blot were applied to examine the protein expression and Kunming mice were used to evaluate preliminary safety or anti-tumor activity of tangeretin and sunitinib.

Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infections is necessary for the development of cervical cancers. An increasing number of retrospective studies have found the depletion of Lactobacillus microbiota in the cervico-vagina facilitate HPV infection and might be involved in viral persistence and cancer development. However, there have been no reports confirming the immunomodulatory effects of Lactobacillus microbiota isolated from cervico-vaginal samples of HPV clearance in women.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease characterized by a lipid-driven infiltration of inflammatory cells in large and medium arteries and is considered to be a major underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases. Cuproptosis, a novel form of cell death, is highly linked to mitochondrial metabolism and mediated by protein lipoylation. However, the clinical implication of cuproptosis-related genes (CRGs) in atherosclerosis remains unclear.

Ferroptosis, a newly identified iron-dependent form of cell death, has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) attenuates behavioral and cognitive deficits in animal models of PD. However, the potential of NBP to prevent dopaminergic neuron death by suppressing ferroptosis has rarely been explored.

Optimal fibular tunnel direction for anterior talofibular ligament reconstruction: 45 degrees outperforms 30 and 60 degrees.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

October 2023

Department of Orthopedics, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, No. 107 on Yanjiang Road West, Guangzhou, 510120, Guangdong, China.

Purpose: There is currently no consensus on the optimal drilling direction of the fibular bone tunnel for anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) reconstruction, and few studies have investigated the potential injury to the peroneus longus and brevis tendons and the possibility of fibular fractures during the drilling process. The aim of this study was to assess the potential risk of drilling the tunnel from different directions and determine the most appropriate tunnel direction. The hypothesis was that drilling the tunnel in the 45-degree direction would be the safest and most suitable for the fibular tunnel.

Background: Serum uric acid (SUA) interferes with lipid metabolism and is considered an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis, a major complication in patients with hyperlipidemia. However, the effects of uric acid levels on mortality in hyperlipidemic patients has yet to be sufficiently determined. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between all-cause mortality and SUA in a hyperlipidemic population.

Background: Human norovirus (HuNoV) is the leading cause of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis globally, and its infection is usually self-limited, so most people become past Norovirus (NoV)-infected individuals. It is known that some antibody responses may play a critical role in preventing viral infection and alleviating disease; however, the characteristics and functions of particular antibody responses in persons with previous infections are not fully understood. Capsid proteins, including VP1 and VP2, are crucial antigenic components of NoV and may regulate antibody immune responses, while epitope-specific antibody responses to capsid proteins have not been comprehensively characterized.
