Aim: The incidence of and factors involved in gastroesophageal varix-related events in hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis patients, including decompensated cirrhosis, after direct-acting antiviral therapy are unclear.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter study using prospective data from 478 hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis patients treated with direct-acting antiviral therapy from February 2019 to December 2021 at 33 Japanese hospitals. Gastroesophageal varices were classified as F1 (small-caliber), F2 (moderately enlarged), or F3 (markedly enlarged) according to the Japanese criteria.

Addressing the global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis requires a multifaceted innovative approach to mitigate impacts on public health, healthcare and economic systems. In the complex evolution of AMR, biofilms and the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) play a pivotal role. is a major AMR player that often forms biofilm, harbors ARGs and is frequently detected in wastewater.

We report the first large-scale retrospective cohort study on adolescent and young adult (AYA) polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) in Japan, a subgroup analysis using Japanese multicenter registry data (JSH-MPN-R18). This study included patients with PV (n = 31) or ET (n = 141) aged 20 to 39 years at the initial visit. Hemorrhage-free survival (HFS) was better in AYA ET than in non-AYA ET (5-year HFS: 100% vs.

Bone morphogenetic protein 3b (BMP3b), also known as growth differentiation factor 10 (GDF10), is a non-osteogenic BMP highly expressed in the skeleton. Although in vitro studies have shown that BMP3b suppresses osteoblast differentiation, the physiological role of BMP3b in regulating bone mass in vivo remains unknown. Here, we show that BMP3b deletion in mice leads to a high bone mass phenotype via an unexpected novel mechanism involving de-repression of canonical BMP/Smad signaling.

Background: Rifampicin is a strong inducer of the hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) family and is known to interact with many clinical drugs. However, to our knowledge, no case of worsening heart failure (HF) due to the interaction between rifampicin and HF drugs has been reported.
Case Summary: A 32-year-old female, who had undergone intracardiac repair for an incomplete atrioventricular septal defect with dextrocardia and prosthetic valve replacements for right and left atrioventricular valve regurgitation, presented as an outpatient.

This multicenter prospective study investigated seasonal variation in home blood pressure (HBP) during pregnancy and its association with the frequency of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and developed trimester-specific upper limits of HBP according to season. Low-risk women with singleton pregnancies were recruited at six university hospitals and three maternity clinics. HBP was measured by a sphygmomanometer twice daily and recorded online using a mobile application.

Background: Non-motor symptoms (NMS) are important factors when selecting treatments for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). We sought to elucidate the prescribing practices for advanced PD patients with NMS in Japanese clinical practice.
Methods: We examined the prescription rates and doses of anti-PD drugs, and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in post hoc analyses of a 52-week observational study of 996 PD patients with wearing-off on levodopa-containing therapy and ≥1 NMS.

Purpose: Gastrointestinal (GI) injury is one of the serious problems of total-body irradiation (TBI). However, no fundamental treatment for TBI and other radiation-induced GI injury has yet been established. Valproic acid (VPA) administration reduces mortality in mice subjected to total-body irradiation (TBI) with X-rays.

Layered zinc(II) hydroxides (LZH) intercalating the deprotonated forms of -(-) or -(+)-1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogenphosphate (denoted as - or -BNDHPH, respectively) were prepared from Zn(NO) at pH 5 and 60 °C by the mixing method. The obtained hybrid compounds (denoted as - or -BNDHP/LZH, respectively) were heated from room temperature up to 800 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. According to the thermal gravimetric/differential thermal analysis measurements, hydroxyl groups were dehydrated at 270-400 °C, followed by the decomposition of organic components at 420-600 °C.

Background: Spatiotemporal dengue forecasting using machine learning (ML) can contribute to the development of prevention and control strategies for impending dengue outbreaks. However, training data for dengue incidence may be inflated with frequent zero values because of the rarity of cases, which lowers the prediction accuracy. This study aimed to understand the influence of spatiotemporal resolutions of data on the accuracy of dengue incidence prediction using ML models, to understand how the influence of spatiotemporal resolution differs between quantitative and qualitative predictions of dengue incidence, and to improve the accuracy of dengue incidence prediction with zero-inflated data.

Background: Robot-assisted surgery is widely performed for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with inferior vena cava (IVC) tumor thrombi. Although many chemotherapeutic options are available for the treatment of unresectable RCC, there are very few reports on robot-assisted radical nephrectomy (RARN) with inferior vena cava thrombectomy (IVCT) after presurgical treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. We believe that pre-surgical treatment can provide minimally invasive surgical benefits to high-risk patients during the perioperative period.

Plants defend themselves against herbivores by recognizing herbivore-derived elicitors and activating intracellular signaling. In Arabidopsis, the receptor-like kinase HAK1 recognizes the poly-saccharide elicitor (FrA) from Spodoptera litura larvae, leading to the expression of defense-related genes such as PDF1.2.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between microvascular status in the non-ischemic myocardium and the diagnostic performance of stress dynamic CT perfusion imaging (CTP) in detecting hemodynamically significant stenosis.
Materials And Methods: This study included 157 patients who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA), CTP, and invasive coronary angiography (ICA), including fractional flow reserve (FFR). Hemodynamically significant stenosis was defined by FFR and ICA.

Seismological observations indicate the presence of chemical heterogeneities at the lowermost mantle, just above the core-mantle boundary (CMB), sparking debate over their origins. A plausible explanation for the enigmatic seismic wave velocities observed in ultra-low-velocity zones (ULVZs) is the process of iron enrichment from the core to the silicate mantle. However, traditional models based on diffusion of atoms and penetration of molten iron fail to account for the significant iron enrichment observed in ULVZs.

Tilapia aquaculture is rapidly expanding worldwide, particularly in Bangladesh. However, metal pollution in aquaculture presents significant environmental and human health risks. This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations of 13 potentially toxic metals (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, Mn, Se, and Zn) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), surface water, and sediment from freshwater and brackish water aquaculture ponds.

Allele-specific, monoallelic expression in diploid organisms represents an extreme case of allelic imbalance resulting from incompatibility between cis- and trans-elements. Due to haploinsufficiency, such monoallelic expression can lead to sporadic genetic diseases. In mice, allelic imbalances can be introduced into F1 offspring from inbred strains.
