[Importance of Secondary Cancer Screening-In the Case of Childhood Cancer].

Gan To Kagaku Ryoho

February 2024

Dept. of Medical Technology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ehime Prefectural University of Health Sciences.

The cumulative incidence of secondary cancers in childhood cancer survivors at 20 years after treatment is 2-5%, which is 3-20 times higher than in the general population. Risk factors include radiation therapy, alkylating agents, platinum drugs, and topoisomerase Ⅱ inhibitors. A retrospective cohort study of 15 pediatric oncology hospitals in Japan revealed that the time to development of a second cancer varies from 5 years or less for hematologic tumors, 10 years or less for bone/soft tissue tumors, approximately 10 years for brain tumors, and 15-20 years for thyroid and adult-type cancers.

Article Synopsis
  • EBV-positive nodal T- and natural killer-cell lymphoma (EBV+ nPTCL) is a type of cancer characterized by T-cell tumor cells that contain the Epstein-Barr virus, but its genetic basis has not been thoroughly studied.
  • Researchers conducted whole-exome and/or whole-genome sequencing on 22 cases of EBV+ nPTCL, identifying key mutations in TET2 (68%) and DNMT3A (32%), which are associated with poorer survival outcomes.
  • The study also highlighted frequent structural variations in the EBV genome, including deletions and integration of human genes like PD-L1, which is linked to increased expression of this protein and may play a role in the development of this lymphoma

CD4 T cells play a key role in the immune response via their differentiation into various helper T cell subsets that produce characteristic cytokines. Epigenetic changes in CD4 T cells are responsible for cytokine production in these subsets, although the exact molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of plant homeodomain finger protein 2 (PHF2), a histone H3K9 demethylase, on cytokine production in CD4 T cells using T cell-specific Phf2-conditional knockout (cKO) mice in this study.

Cerebral response to emotional working memory based on vocal cues: an fNIRS study.

Front Hum Neurosci

December 2023

Applied Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Chuo University, Bunkyo, Japan.

Introduction: Humans mainly utilize visual and auditory information as a cue to infer others' emotions. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown the neural basis of memory processing based on facial expression, but few studies have examined it based on vocal cues. Thus, we aimed to investigate brain regions associated with emotional judgment based on vocal cues using an N-back task paradigm.

The Yokohama System for Reporting Endometrial Cytology (TYS) has been proposed by an expert meeting under the auspices of the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) in May 2016 at the IAC in Yokohama. Since its introduction, the TYS has been receiving worldwide acceptance, and this review aims to assess its global impact. The adoption of endometrial cytology as a diagnostic procedure has been hampered in the past by difficulties arising in interpreting the cellular findings due to a number of factors (such as excess blood, cellular overlapping and the complex physiology of endometrium).

Immunotherapy using bispecific antibodies including bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) has the potential to enhance the efficacy of treatment for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. However, myeloma may still recur after treatment because of downregulation of a target antigen and/or myeloma cell heterogeneity. To strengthen immunotherapy for myeloma while overcoming its characteristics, we have newly developed a BiTE-based modality, referred to as bridging-BiTE (B-BiTE).

Article Synopsis
  • PSAP (prosaposin) is a trophic factor primarily located in the basal side of seminiferous tubules, where Sertoli cells and pachytene spermatocytes are involved in its distribution and processing.
  • The PSAP-sortilin complex is targeted to large lysosomes in Sertoli cells for processing, while smaller lysosomes transport PSAP to the apical side for secretion around sperm heads.
  • In immature testis, PSAP is produced by tubular cells for self-proliferation, whereas in adults, both Sertoli cells and pachytene spermatocytes produce and secrete PSAP to support the proliferation and differentiation of surrounding germ cells.
