Approximately 80% of primary hyperoxaluria cases are caused by primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1, OMIM# 259900), which is characterized by pathogenic variants in the gene, resulting in deficiency of the liver-specific enzyme alanine-glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGT). This leads to increased production of oxalate, which cannot be effectively eliminated from the body, resulting in its accumulation primarily in the kidneys and other organs. This study included 17 PH1 Egyptian patients from 12 unrelated families, recruited from the Inherited Kidney Disease Outpatient Clinic and the Dialysis Units, Cairo University Hospitals, during the period from January 2018 to December 2019, aiming to identify the pathogenic variants in the gene.

The incidence of rare diseases is expected to be comparatively higher in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region than in other parts of the world, attributed to the high prevalence of consanguinity. Most MENA countries share social and economic statuses, cultural relativism, religious beliefs, and healthcare policies. Polycystic kidney diseases (PKDs) are the most common genetic causes of kidney failure, accounting for nearly 8.

The challenge of rapidly diagnosing myocardial ischemia in unstable angina (UA) patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) is due to a lack of sensitive blood biomarkers. This has prompted an investigation into microRNAs (miRNAs) related to cardiac-derived Nourin for potential diagnostic application. The Nourin protein is rapidly expressed in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (UA and acute myocardial infarction (AMI)).

Liver biopsy is historically the gold standard for liver fibrosis assessment of chronic hepatitis C patients. However, with the introduction and validation of noninvasive tests (NITs) to evaluate advanced fibrosis, and the direct-acting antiviral agents for treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV), the role of NITs have become even more complex. There is now need for longitudinal monitoring and elucidation of cutoff values for prediction of liver-related complication after sustained virological response.

Millions of people have been affected ever since the emergence of the corona virus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, leading to an urgent need for antiviral drug and vaccine development. Current experimentation on traditional two-dimensional culture (2D) fails to accurately mimic the in vivo microenvironment for the disease, while in vivo animal model testing does not faithfully replicate human COVID-19 infection. Human-based three-dimensional (3D) cell culture models such as spheroids, organoids, and organ-on-a-chip present a promising solution to these challenges.
