While initial clinical trials showed mixed results, ongoing research is exploring its potential to slow cognitive decline and improve the lives of those affected by this devastating neurodegenerative condition.

Assessment of lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant capacity in patients with breast cancer.

Aim: Breast cancer (BC), a disease in which abnormal breast cells grow out of control and form tumors, is a prevalent life-threatening disease worldwide. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the development and progression of various cancers, including BC. Assessing lipid peroxidation and overall antioxidant status in BC offers valuable information on disease progression, patient prognosis, and the effectiveness of therapeutic options.

Comparison of the role of vitamin D in normal organs and those affected by COVID-19.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has opened up new avenues for exploring the importance of vitamin D in immunity, in addition to its role in calcium absorption. Recently, vitamin D supplementation has been found to enhance T regulatory lymphocytes, which are reduced in individuals with COVID-19. Increased risk of pneumonia and increases in inflammatory cytokines have been reported to be major threats associated with vitamin-D deficiency.

Introduction: Spontaneous pneumothorax is a life-threatening thoracic condition that could be either primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) in the absence of an underlying lung disease or secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) in the presence of an underlying lung disease. In the case of recurrent, contralateral spontaneous pneumothorax or persistent air leak with a chest drain, surgery with bullectomy associated with pleurectomy or pleurodesis is the gold standard management.

Aim: To compare two different techniques for bullectomy, either by using staplers or by hand sewing.

Mortality predictors in acute myocardial infarction: results from a single-center study in Saudi Arabia.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Risk factors of mortality in patients with AMI have been widely investigated, identifying older age and heart failure as common contributors. This study aimed to determine risk factors and explore predictors associated with higher mortality among patients with AMI.

Highly porous activated carbon derived from the papaya plant (stems and leaves) for superior adsorption of alizarin red s and methylene blue dyes from wastewater.

In this study, stems and leaves of the papaya plant were employed to prepare a high-quality porous adsorbent carbonization and chemical activation using phosphoric acid. This adsorbent demonstrates superior adsorption capabilities for the efficient removal of hazardous alizarin red s (ARS) and methylene blue (MB) dyes. Thus, it contributes to waste reduction and promotes sustainable practices in environmental remediation, aligning with global efforts to develop sustainable materials that address water pollution while supporting circular economy principles.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a recently developed class of fluorescent nanoparticles made from carbon. Co-doping with heteroatoms such as nitrogen and sulfur improved the properties and generated a high quantum yield. In the proposed study, we utilized a simple, cost-effective, single-stage hydrothermal approach to produce extreme photoluminescence co-doped, nitrogen and sulfur, CQDs (N,S-CODs).

Unraveling the Atomistic Mechanism of Electrostatic Lateral Association of Peptide β-Sheet Structures and Its Role in Nanofiber Growth and Hydrogelation.

Guiding molecular assembly of peptides into rationally engineered nanostructures remains a major hurdle against the development of functional peptide-based nanomaterials. Various non-covalent interactions come into play to drive the formation and stabilization of these assemblies, of which electrostatic interactions are key. Here, the atomistic mechanisms by which electrostatic interactions contribute toward controlling self-assembly and lateral association of ultrashort β-sheet forming peptides are deciphered.

Validation of the Perceived hope scale in Arabic-speaking adults living in Gaza in the midst of war, destruction and death.

Background: Despite its obvious relevance for clinical practice and research, it is surprising that presently no hope measure is available for use among Arabic-speaking populations, especially the most vulnerable ones who have been going through major humanitarian crises. This paper aimed to provide novel insights into psychometric information on the psychometric properties of an Arabic translation of the Perceived Hope Scale (PHS) in Palestinians living in Gaza who have endured several months of suffering since the war began in October 2023.

Method: This study had a cross-sectional design and applied a quantitative research approach.

In this work, an electrochemical method for the determination of tirofiban HCl in pharmaceutical dosage form was developed and validated.

Is middle East pain syndrome (MEPS) a variant of fibromyalgia syndrome or a distinct disease?

Background: Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disabling musculoskeletal condition of unknown aetiology characterized by generalized musculoskeletal pain, extreme fatigue, mood disturbance, impaired cognition, and lack of refreshing sleep. Middle East pain syndrome (MEPS) is a newly described pollution-induced syndrome of hyperparathyroidism and fibromyalgia mimicking rheumatoid arthritis, characterized by the radiological presence of spur-like excrescences in terminal phalanges. This study aimed to explore the inflammatory nature of Middle East pain and Fibromyalgia syndromes.

Integrating portfolio and mentorship in competency-based medical education: a Middle East experience.

Within the context of competency-based medical education, portfolios and mentorship emerge as complementary interventions, each offering distinct perspectives and benefits. Together, these elements synergistically contribute to a holistic and effective approach to medical education, encompassing both the academic and personal development imperatives of students. However, this integration comes with several implementation challenges that must be anticipated and promptly addressed.

Early childhood caries risk prediction using machine learning approaches in Bangladesh.

Background: In the last years, artificial intelligence (AI) has contributed to improving healthcare including dentistry. The objective of this study was to develop a machine learning (ML) model for early childhood caries (ECC) prediction by identifying crucial health behaviours within mother-child pairs.

Methods: For the analysis, we utilized a representative sample of 724 mothers with children under six years in Bangladesh.

Effectiveness of an environmental educational program on intern dentists' knowledge and practices regarding eco-friendly green dentistry: a quasi-experimental study.

Background: The dental industry is associated with significant environmental impacts so there is a growing need for eco-friendly practices in dentistry. This study aimed to assess dental interns' knowledge and practices regarding eco-friendly dentistry before and after the implementation of the environmental educational program.

Methods: An interventional quasi-experimental study (one group pre-test-post-test design) was conducted on 69 intern dentists at the Faculty of Dentistry Alexandria University.

Biodegradation of azo dyes by Aspergillus flavus and its bioremediation potential using seed germination efficiency.

The worldwide textile industry extensively uses azo dyes, which pose serious health and environmental risks. Effective cleanup is necessary but challenging. Developing bioremediation methods for textile effluents will improve color removal efficiency.

Comparative study between high and low dose methylene blue infusion in septic cancer patients: a randomized, blinded, controlled study.

Purpose: Septic shock is a common threat, and is the primary cause of death in almost all critical care units. Mortality of septic shock remains exceedingly high. The early use of methylene blue (MB) in different doses as adjunctive to vasopressors has promising results.

A novel optimal design approach for bladeless wind turbines considering mechanical properties of composite materials used.

Bladeless wind turbines face operational limitations due to the lock-in phenomenon. This study introduces two novel mechanisms for designing bladeless wind turbines to address this issue, enabling operation across a broad wind speed range from 2 to 10 m/s while ensuring that lock-in conditions are satisfied at any wind speed within this range. The study aims to maintain optimal performance without any decline that is observed in conventional bladeless wind turbines by controlling the turbine's natural frequency through implementing these mechanisms, either by adjusting the effective length of the stand or by incorporating an additional mass in the hollow mast, or both.
