The Role of Molecular and Cellular Aging Pathways on Age-Related Hearing Loss.

Int J Mol Sci

September 2024

Biomedical Sciences Department, School of Medicine, Creighton University, Omaha, NE 68178, USA.

Aging, a complex process marked by molecular and cellular changes, inevitably influences tissue and organ homeostasis and leads to an increased onset or progression of many chronic diseases and conditions, one of which is age-related hearing loss (ARHL). ARHL, known as presbycusis, is characterized by the gradual and irreversible decline in auditory sensitivity, accompanied by the loss of auditory sensory cells and neurons, and the decline in auditory processing abilities associated with aging. The extended human lifespan achieved by modern medicine simultaneously exposes a rising prevalence of age-related conditions, with ARHL being one of the most significant.

Global Workforce and Access: Demand, Education, Quality.

Semin Radiat Oncol

October 2024

ICEC, International Cancer Expert Corps, Washington, DC; Radiation Research Program, Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.

There has long existed a substantial disparity in access to radiotherapy globally. This issue has only been exacerbated as the growing disparity of cancer incidence between high-income countries (HIC) and low and middle-income countries (LMICs) widens, with a pronounced increase in cancer cases in LMICs. Even within HICs, iniquities within local communities may lead to a lack of access to care.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels are linked to an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), but how sex affects this relationship has been unclear.
  • A study analyzed data from 1,858 patients to see how Lp(a) correlates with CAD in men and women, using two Lp(a) thresholds (≥30 and ≥50 mg/dL).
  • Results showed that Lp(a) levels predict CAD risk differently by sex: ≥30 mg/dL was significant for women only, while ≥50 mg/dL was relevant for both men and women, suggesting different risk assessment methods might be needed based on sex.

  • Pediatric Burkitt lymphoma (pBL) is a fast-growing cancer in children that requires timely diagnosis and treatment, with microRNAs (miRNAs) playing a critical role in understanding the disease's prognosis.
  • The study utilized microRNA sequencing to identify differentially expressed miRNAs in both tumor tissues and plasma from pBL patients, highlighting their potential as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.
  • The results showed that specific circulating and tissue miRNAs were significantly higher in pBL cases, opening avenues for improved diagnostic methods and survival predictions.

  • - The study assessed trauma CT interpretation proficiency among emergency medicine residents in Turkey, finding a median accuracy rate of 64.9% with factors influencing interpretation performance analyzed.
  • - Four main factors linked to interpretation failure were identified: shorter interpretation times, lower self-confidence, over-reliance on radiology reports, and lack of departmental training programs.
  • - The findings suggest the necessity for improved educational strategies in radiology for emergency medicine residents to enhance their skills in trauma CT interpretation and ultimately improve patient care outcomes.

During thyroidectomy, both needle electrodes (NE) and endotracheal tube electrodes (ETE) can be used. Incomplete contact of the endotracheal tube electrode with the vocal cords, endotracheal tube electrode may hinder an optimal outcome and even result in an inability to obtain an electromyography wave while neuromonitoring the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN). There is no study that compares NE and ETE for EBSLN monitoring.

Lipoprotein (a) is a well-known cardiovascular risk factor, and its level is primarily determined genetically. Because of its genetic basis, average Lipoprotein (a) levels may vary between different populations. In Türkiye, the average Lipoprotein (a) level remains uncertain due to the limited number of large population studies.

Cancer is anticipated to become the pioneer reason of disease-related deaths worldwide in the next two decades, underscoring the urgent need for personalized and adaptive treatment strategies. These strategies are crucial due to the high variability in drug efficacy and the tendency of cancer cells to develop resistance. This study investigates the potential of theranostic nanotechnology using three innovative fluorescent polymers (FP-1, FP-2, and FP-3) encapsulated in niosomal carriers, combining therapy (chemotherapy and radiotherapy) with fluorescence imaging.

  • * Conducted over three years, the study included elderly patients with moderate to severe aortic stenosis, evaluating their demographics, hemodynamics, and outcomes after surgery under low-dose spinal anesthesia.
  • * The results indicated a notable mortality rate of 8.9% at 30 days and 24.4% at 180 days, but the procedure was generally safe, with low complication rates and quick onset of nerve block, suggesting this anesthesia approach is viable for such high-risk patients.

Int J Infect Dis

October 2024

Gulhane School of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Türkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed 331 patients with primary brain abscesses (PBAs) from 39 centers in 16 countries, focusing on infection causes, risk factors, and mortality outcomes over a 12-year period.
  • Study results showed that the majority of patients were middle-aged men (average age 46.8), with symptoms like headaches and fever; Gram-positive cocci were the most common pathogens.
  • Key factors influencing mortality at 42 days included intravenous drug use and malignancy, while factors affecting 180-day mortality included temporal lobe involvement and the presence of unidentified bacteria.

  • Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a key role in the remodeling and defense of dental pulp, but research on their function in primary teeth is limited, indicating a need for further studies on their contributions and the effectiveness of Biodentine as a pulpotomy material.
  • The study aims to compare the expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-8, and MMP-9 in reversible vs irreversible pulpitis cases, and to evaluate the clinical success of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine in pulpotomy treatments for primary molars.
  • In a randomized controlled trial involving 63 primary molars, significant elevations in MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels were observed, which may
