Twenty-six permanent vital molars with carious pulp exposures and periapical involvement presenting as radiolucencies or radiopacities on radiographic examination, in patients aged between 10-24 years, were treated using an atraumatic surgical technique with calcium hydroxide alone. The healing was evaluated using clinical and radiographic criteria: absence of clinical symptoms, sensitivity of the radicular pulp, formation of a hard tissue barrier in the exposed area, resolution of periapical involvement and no intraradicular pathosis radiographically. Assessed by these criteria, successful results were achieved in 24 teeth.

An in vitro study was performed to determine the number and the type of root canals, their ramifications, transverse anastomoses, apical foramina locations, and frequency of apical deltas in a Turkish population. One thousand four hundred human permanent teeth were injected with India ink, decalcified, and cleared after the length of each was measured. The examination of root canal systems of the teeth was based on Vertucci's classification.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), is the most popular irrigation solution used in root canal treatment but it is known to be an irritant to vital tissues. There have been many case reports dealing with toxic effects of this material. Although the allergic potential of NaOCl has been described in the medical literature, only one case of known hypersensitivity to NaOCl has been reported in the dental literature.

An exposed pulp in a crown-fractured vital young tooth may be treated with either pulp capping or pulpotomy, using a calcium hydroxide dressing. Calcium hydroxide stimulates dentine bridge formation, which is a good indicator of pulp vitality. In this case it is reported that, although seriously contaminated for a long period with debris from the oral environment, the dentine bridge which formed after pulpotomy was able to function as a protective pulpal barrier.

An in vitro dye leakage study was performed to compare the sealing ability of high copper amalgam with cavity varnish and cermet ionomer cement with and without varnish when used as retrofilling materials. The root canals of 54 maxillary anterior teeth were instrumented and obturated with gutta-percha and sealer. The apical 3 mm of the roots were resected and apical class I cavity preparations were made.
