Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) is a rare and recently described distinct pattern of lung apical fibrosis involving the upper lobe parenchyma and pleural dome. PPFE has definable and reproducible clinical, radiological and histopathological criteria, which allowed its classification as an independent interstitial lung disease. Several factors have been associated with PPFE, such as chemotherapy, especially with alkylating agents.

Background: Patients with primary systemic vasculitis or polymyalgia rheumatica might be at a high risk for poor COVID-19 outcomes due to the treatments used, the potential organ damage cause by primary systemic vasculitis, and the demographic factors associated with these conditions. We therefore aimed to investigate factors associated with COVID-19 outcomes in patients with primary systemic vasculitis or polymyalgia rheumatica.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, adult patients (aged ≥18 years) diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 12, 2020, and April 12, 2021, who had a history of primary systemic vasculitis (antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody [ANCA]-associated vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, Behçet's syndrome, or other vasculitis) or polymyalgia rheumatica, and were reported to the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance registry were included.

Physiological Basis of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation and Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal in Respiratory Failure.

Membranes (Basel)

March 2021

Department of Adult Critical Care, Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, King's Health Partners, London SE1 7EH, UK.

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for severe respiratory failure has seen an exponential growth in recent years. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal CO removal (ECCOR) represent two modalities that can provide full or partial support of the native lung function, when mechanical ventilation is either unable to achieve sufficient gas exchange to meet metabolic demands, or when its intensity is considered injurious. While the use of ECMO has defined indications in clinical practice, ECCOR remains a promising technique, whose safety and efficacy are still being investigated.

Determinants of HIV-1 Late Presentation in a Cohort of Portuguese HIV-1 Patients.

AIDS Res Hum Retroviruses

November 2021

Department of Infectious Diseases, Hospital Center Lisboa Ocidental, Egas Moniz Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal.

The present study aims to identify factors associated with late presentation and late presentation with advanced disease based on a population of patients followed in a Portuguese hospital between 1984 and 2017.

Evaluating SARS-CoV-2 Seroconversion Following Relieve of Confinement Measures.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2020

Human Immunobiology and Pathogenesis Laboratory, Lisbon, Portugal.

Seroprevalence studies are crucial both for estimating the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 exposure and to provide a measure for the efficiency of the confinement measures. Portuguese universities were closed on March 16th 2020, when Portugal only registered 62 SARS-CoV-2 infection cases per million. We have validated a SARS-CoV-2 ELISA assay to a stabilized full-length spike protein using 216 pre-pandemic and 19 molecularly diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 positive individual's samples.

Purpose: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been intensively studied in a myriad of autoimmune diseases. As for noninfectious uveitis (NIU), results have been contradictory, and studies have failed to demonstrate a consistent reduction in Treg cell frequency in patients with active disease. The present study aims to characterize T lymphocyte subsets, including naïve and memory Tregs as well as their respective CD39 expression, in the peripheral blood of NIU patients.
