"Parenting Beyond the Veil": The Continued Parenting Relationship After a Child's Death Due to Cancer.

Childhood cancer is the leading cause of illness-related death, leaving thousands of parents to experience bereavement. This article presents select findings about the nature of the continued parenting relationship, which is an essential theme of the parental bereavement experience. Heideggerian phenomenology provided the philosophical underpinnings of this study, which aimed to describe the lived experience of bereaved parents who experienced the death of a child due to cancer.

  • This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on family-centered care for hospitalized infants, utilizing a 49-item online survey sent to 96 healthcare professionals across 22 countries.
  • Before the pandemic, most healthcare units actively welcomed families and supported skin-to-skin care; however, during the pandemic, 83% of units restricted family presence and 32% limited parental participation in infant care.
  • Additionally, smaller units faced stricter regulations compared to medium-sized ones, and units with single-family rooms generally had fewer restrictions, indicating that family separation increased during the pandemic regardless of local infection rates.

"Alexa, Am I pregnant?": A content analysis of a virtual assistant's responses to prenatal health questions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: To elucidate whether Amazon's virtual assistant, Alexa, provides evidence-based support as a supplement to provider-facilitated prenatal care, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: Using a conceptual content analysis approach, a query of 40 questions, relating to all phases of pregnancy, was collected from Alexa by two independent investigators, using two unique devices, over a one-week period between May 20, 2020 and May 27, 2020. Alexa's responses were matched to the evidence-based content from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and reviewed by a Certified Nurse Midwife for completeness and currency.

Aim: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the validity of the Clinical Simulation Competency Assessment Tool (ClinSimCAT).

Background: The 2011 Future of Nursing report encouraged nursing programs to move toward a competency-based approach to education. As no tool was found to holistically evaluate nursing student competency in clinical and simulation settings, we developed the ClinSimCAT based on the Institute of Medicine recommended competencies.

Nurses experience high rates of violence on the job, which is a significant stressor. Stress can alter nurses' care of patients, but stress can be mitigated by resilience. The use of long-acting reversible contraception, namely, intrauterine device (IUDs) and the subdermal implant, has been recommended to address the high rate of the unintended pregnancy in the United States. IUDs are a safe, highly effective contraceptive method, suitable for most women. The underutilization of IUDs arises in part from the lack of translation of best practices in the clinical setting as well as fears and misperceptions about this contraceptive method held by health care providers and women.
