The nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor TrkA is a tightly regulated receptor tyrosine kinase that activates neuronal signaling pathways promoting cell survival in addition to axonal and dendritic outgrowth. Previously, we showed that NGF and TrkA signaling is altered in neuron-like PC12 cells that overexpress Nogo-A, a protein known to influence axonal outgrowth and dendritic arborization associated with neuronal plasticity. In the present report, we provide evidence for changes in NGF-mediated receptor-level and downstream signaling that occur in cells overexpressing Nogo-A.

Complex endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) requires the use of multiple small sheath cannulation inside a large sheath. Because the large sheath is not designed for multiple small sheath cannulation, large amounts of blood loss can be encountered in complex EVARs. Cell Saver can be used effectively in complex EVARs using a modified draping technique, allowing for increased cell salvage and autogenous transfusions as needed.

Introduction: Well-known adverse events of antipsychotics are movement disorders, or extrapyramidal symptoms, such as drug-induced parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia.

Objective: With new evidence suggesting a link between low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and risk of Parkinson's disease, this study sought to investigate if that link also translated to patients taking antipsychotics with low HDL-C and an increased risk for developing a movement disorder.

Design: Adult patients (n=89) at an inpatient state psychiatric facility taking at least one antipsychotic with at least one HDL-C level were assessed for signs of a movement disorder through their history and physical, progress notes, and Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) score.

Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, United States.

Performance in stair-climbing is largely associated with disruptions to mobility and community participation in children with cerebral palsy (CP). It is important to understand the nature of motor impairments responsible for making stairs a challenge in children with bilateral CP to clarify underlying causes of impaired mobility. In pediatric clinical populations, sensitive measurements of movement quality can be captured during the initial step of stair ascent.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared early and long-term mortality rates in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) based on their ejection fraction (EF): reduced vs. preserved.
  • Two researchers conducted a thorough search of medical literature from various databases, ultimately analyzing five studies with a total of 94,399 participants.
  • Results indicated that patients with reduced EF experienced significantly higher risks of both early (RR: 2.14) and late mortality (RR: 1.67) compared to those with preserved EF, highlighting the need for EF evaluation in assessing CABG patient risks.

Overlap syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that satisfies the diagnostic criteria for at least two well-known autoimmune diseases. In this report, we describe a rare case of lupus overlap in an elderly woman with primary Sjögren's syndrome who presented with features of nephritic-nephrotic syndrome and renal biopsy results typical of lupus nephritis combined with multiple positive autoantibodies. The kidney biopsy results were assigned the highest weightage based on the revised 2019 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) classification criteria developed by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), though they share similar clinical characteristics, are distinguishable based on specific characteristics. The concomitant presentation of SLE and AAV as overlap syndrome is rare and makes the diagnosis challenging. Here, we describe a rare case of SLE and AAV overlaps presenting with hemorrhagic stroke as initial presentation, which has been reported only once before.

Article Synopsis
  • New narrow-spectrum antibiotics for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) are changing how we measure treatment success from just after therapy to 30 days later.
  • The current way of defining successful treatment, based on the number of unformed bowel movements (UBMs), isn't really working and might make it hard to know if a treatment was successful long-term.
  • The authors suggest better ways to define success in trials, like having fewer UBMs per day and looking at stool types a short time after treatment ends.
