In Southern and Eastern Africa, initiation of daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention has been high among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) offered PrEP. However, persistence and prevention-effective use of PrEP among this critical group continues to be a challenge. We conducted a qualitative sub-study of AGYW from the Community PrEP Study in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa who had high rates of pick up for monthly PrEP refills over two years, but differing levels of PrEP adherence based on tenofovir-diphosphate (TFV-DP) measurements in dried blood spots (DBS).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a smartphone app designed to enhance adherence to positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy among patients newly diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • - In a randomized controlled trial involving 87 participants, researchers measured app engagement, retention rates, and patient feedback to evaluate the app's effectiveness compared to standard care and activity monitoring.
  • - Results showed that the app was both feasible and acceptable, with high PAP usage reported in both groups, but no significant differences in adherence or clinical outcomes were found between the app users and the control group.

Globally, systems have invested in a variety of dementia care programs in response to the aging population and those who have been diagnosed with dementia. This study is a qualitative secondary analysis of interview data from a larger study investigating stakeholder perceptions of programs that support caregivers and people living with an Alzheimer's Disease or Alzheimer's Disease-related dementia (AD/ADRD) in five North American jurisdictions. This study analyzed interviews with individuals living with an AD/ADRD and caregivers of individuals living with an AD/ADRD (n = 11).

Objective: Sexual assault perpetration remains prevalent among young men, and emotion regulation (ER) is a prominent contributor to sexual assault perpetration among young men experiencing anger or sexual arousal. However, little is known about the specific ER strategies which men use when perpetrating. Thus, the present study used latent profile analysis to group men into profiles based on their in-the-moment use of several ER strategies during two, hypothetical sexual situations: one which induced anger and another which induced sexual arousal.

Background: The prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) and its related cancers is a major global concern. In the United States, routine HPV vaccination is recommended for youth aged 11 or 12 years. Despite HPV being the most common sexually transmitted infection and the vaccine's proven efficacy, the vaccination rate among US youth remains below the recommended 80% completion rate.

This scoping review explores findings from the psychological and medical literature on the adaptive grieving experiences of bereaved dementia family caregivers and integrates what healthcare professionals can do to support bereaved dementia family caregivers transition into a post-death role. Bereaved dementia family caregivers are particularly susceptible to prolonged grief disorder post-death due to the protracted caregiving demands and progressive course of the illness. The mention of caregiver grief while the person with dementia is living is quite common in the literature; however, limited research focuses on the bereaved dementia family caregiver and the methods they use to grieve adaptively.

Article Synopsis
  • - The HL7 organization created a set of 45 sensitive data categories to help implement electronic consent technology, enabling patients to control the sharing of their sensitive medical records.
  • - A study involving twelve physicians led to revisions of 21 of these categories, including the addition of new categories and the modification of existing definitions to promote clearer communication and inclusivity.
  • - Future updates to the HL7 categories should integrate physicians' insights, validate them with patient data, and prioritize patient perspectives for a more patient-centered approach.

Multidimensional Sleep Health Problems Across Middle and Older Adulthood Predict Early Mortality.

J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci

March 2024

Division of Pulmonary Allergy Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

Background: Having multiple sleep problems is common in adulthood. Yet, most studies have assessed single sleep variables at one timepoint, potentially misinterpreting health consequences of co-occurring sleep problems that may change over time. We investigated the relationship between multidimensional sleep health across adulthood and mortality.

Background And Objectives: Sleep disorders often predict or co-occur with cognitive decline. Yet, little is known about how the relationship unfolds among older adults at risk for cognitive decline. To examine the associations of sleep disorders with cognitive decline in older adults with unimpaired cognition or impaired cognition (mild cognitive impairment and dementia).

Objectives: Pain typically prompts individuals to seek relief. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Pain Relief Motivation Scales, applying revised "reinforcement sensitivity theory" to measure the neuropsychological systems underlying motivation for pain relief. We hypothesized a 6-factor structure based on previous work, including one Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) factor, one Fight-Flight-Freeze System factor, and 4 Behavioral Activation System (BAS) factors.

Nursing home (NH) residents' capacity to communicate deteriorates with dementia. Consequently, NHs with high proportions of people living with dementia (PLWD) may receive fewer resident complaints, and/or investigating complaints may be challenging. We assessed NHs' proportion of PLWD in relation to total and substantiated complaints.

J Phys Act Health

December 2023

Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ, USA.

Background: Climate change, increasing recognition of institutionalized discrimination, and the COVID-19 pandemic are large-scale, societal events (ie, forces of change) that affect the timing, settings, and modes of youth physical activity. Despite the impact that forces of change have on youth physical activity and physical activity environments, few studies consider how they affect physical activity promotion.

Methods: The authors use 2 established frameworks, the ecological model of physical activity and the youth physical activity timing, how, and setting framework, to highlight changes in physical activity patterns of youth in North America that have resulted from contemporary forces of change.

Scoping Conceptions of Equity: Reviewing a Decade of Physical Activity Research.

J Healthy Eat Act Living

August 2023

Arizona State University, Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, U.S.A.

Lee and Cubbin's (2009) call for a "socially just" Ecological Model of Physical Activity (EMPA) prompted an inquiry into physical activity (PA), active living (AL) research that advances social justice framed as a set of equity-centered principles for research. In response to the call, we conducted a scoping review to explore how PAAL research has operationalized equity to advance a socially-just EMPA. We searched for original research, published between 2010 and 2020, using key terms for 'physical activity' and 'equity' that produced 5,152 non-duplicated records.

  • Weight gain and negative body composition changes during menopause are common in midlife and older women, impacting their health and well-being.
  • Traditional weight management strategies focusing on diet and exercise may not yield sustained results because they often overlook broader biobehavioral factors.
  • A new biobehavioral model incorporates psychological, behavioral, and physiological elements, suggesting that practices like tai chi, qigong, and yoga can effectively improve body composition in perimenopausal women by addressing these various factors.

Introduction: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) face barriers that jeopardize their prevention-effective use of daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We sought to understand factors that influence AGYW's prolonged breaks in PrEP use, and their decisions to re-initiate or discontinue using PrEP in the context of a community-based adherence support intervention.

Methods: In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted between December 2019 and April 2021 with purposively selected AGYW (aged 16-25) enrolled in the Community PrEP Study (CPS) in Buffalo City Metro Health District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
