Several trials have demonstrated that the easier technical feasibility does not affect the long-term surgical result. However, concern about increased risk of gastric and esophageal cancers has been expressed by several bariatric surgeons.

The Fenice project to evaluate and improve the quality of healthcare in high-dependency care units: results after the first year.

Intern Emerg Med

May 2024

Department of Medical Epidemiology, Istituto Di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri IRCCS, 24020, Ranica, Bergamo, Italy.

High-Dependency care Units (HDUs) have been introduced worldwide as intermediate wards between Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and general wards. Performing a comparative assessment of the quality of care in HDU is challenging because there are no uniform standards and heterogeneity among centers is wide. The Fenice network promoted a prospective cohort study to assess the quality of care provided by HDUs in Italy.

Background: Although complete mesocolic excision (CME) is supposed to be associated with a higher lymph node (LN) yield, decreased local recurrence, and survival improvement, its implementation currently is debated because the evidence level of these data is rather low and still not supported by randomized controlled trials.

Method: This is a multicenter, randomized, superiority trial (NCT04871399). The 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) was the primary end point of the study.

The Importance of RSV Epidemiological Surveillance: A Multicenter Observational Study of RSV Infection during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Viruses

January 2023

Infectious Diseases Unit, Department of Pediatrics, University of Turin, Regina Margherita Children's Hospital, A.O.U. Città Della Salute e della Scienza di Torino, 10126 Turin, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed RSV infections in children under 3 years old in 15 Pediatric Emergency Departments across different years (2019, 2020, 2021) to understand the impact of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • There was a significant increase in RSV cases in 2021 compared to 2019 and 2020, particularly among 2-3 year-olds, with the peak occurrence happening a month earlier in 2021.
  • Despite the increase in RSV admissions in 2021, the severity of the infections remained consistent across all years studied, indicating a shift in the age demographic affected by RSV post-COVID-19.

Background: Evidence on the efficacy of minimally invasive (MI) segmental resection of splenic flexure cancer (SFC) is not available, mostly due to the rarity of this tumor. This study aimed to determine the survival outcomes of MI and open treatment, and to investigate whether MI is noninferior to open procedure regarding short-term outcomes.

Methods: This nationwide retrospective cohort study included all consecutive SFC segmental resections performed in 30 referral centers between 2006 and 2016.

Background/objectives: During pregnancy, body composition alterations can be considered as markers of complications and in this context, a non-invasive and low-cost method such as Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis (BIVA), can be employed to monitor such changes. This study aimed at identifying body compartments trend during physiological pregnancy.

Subjects/methods: Classic and specific BIVA variables have been measured in a sample of 37 pregnant women approximately every 4 weeks of gestation and once postpartum.

Background: One of the main problem health care systems are facis is the mis-use and over-use of medical resources (including useless exams, surgical interventions, medical treatments, screening procedures…) which may lead to high health care related costs without increased patients' benefit and possible harm to the patients themselves. The "Choosing wisely" campaign, in Italy denominated "Doing more does not mean doing better", tries to educate doctors and citizens at a correct use of medical resources.

Methods: the Italian Society of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (SIAAIC) adhered to the "Doing more does not mean doing better" campaing and made a list of the 5 allergological procedures with the highest evidence of inappropriateness.
