Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas: conceptual controversy and clinical impact.

Virchows Arch

May 2024

Coordinator of the International Head and Neck Scientific Group, Padua, Italy.

Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinomas (PDTC) are rare diseases; nevertheless, they account for the majority of deaths from non-anaplastic follicular cell-derived thyroid carcinomas. Establishing the diagnosis and treatment of PDTC is challenging given the low incidence and the lack of standardization of diagnostic criteria. These limitations hamper the ability to compare therapeutic modalities and outcomes between recent and older studies.

Mass loss of the Antarctic Ice Sheet has been driven primarily by the thinning of the floating ice shelves that fringe the ice sheet, reducing their buttressing potential and causing land ice to accelerate into the ocean. Observations of ice-shelf thickness change by satellite altimetry stretch back only to 1992 (refs. ) and previous information about thinning remains unquantified.

Spatial transcriptomics reveals novel genes during the remodelling of the embryonic human arterial valves.

PLoS Genet

November 2023

Human Developmental Biology Resource, Biosciences Institute, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, United Kingdom.

Abnormalities of the arterial valves, including bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) are amongst the most common congenital defects and are a significant cause of morbidity as well as predisposition to disease in later life. Despite this, and compounded by their small size and relative inaccessibility, there is still much to understand about how the arterial valves form and remodel during embryogenesis, both at the morphological and genetic level. Here we set out to address this in human embryos, using Spatial Transcriptomics (ST).

Seeing the forest (plot) for the trees-the importance of evidence synthesis in older adult care.

Age Ageing

November 2023

NIHR Evidence Synthesis Group @Complex Review Support Unit.

Systematically reviewing all the available evidence and then creating summary analyses of the pooled data is the foundation of evidence-based practice. Indeed, this evidence synthesis approach informs much of the care of older adults in hospital and community. It is perhaps no surprise that the journal Age and Ageing is a frequent platform for publishing research papers based on systematic review and synthesis.

Glucose status within dark-grown etiolated cotyledons determines seedling de-etiolation upon light irradiation.

Plant Physiol

December 2023

The Key Laboratory of Biotechnology for Medicinal Plants of Jiangsu Province, School of Life Science, Jiangsu Normal University, Xuzhou 221116, People's Republic of China.

Exposure of dark-grown etiolated seedlings to light triggers the transition from skotomorphogenesis/etiolation to photomorphogenesis/de-etiolation. In the life cycle of plants, de-etiolation is essential for seedling development and plant survival. The mobilization of soluble sugars (glucose [Glc], sucrose, and fructose) derived from stored carbohydrates and lipids to target organs, including cotyledons, hypocotyls, and radicles, underpins de-etiolation.

Spondylodiscitis is the commonest spine infection, and pyogenic spondylodiscitis is the most common subtype. Whilst antibiotic therapy is the mainstay of treatment, some advocate that early surgery can improve mortality, relapse rates, and length of stay. Given that the condition carries a high mortality rate of up to 20%, the most effective treatment must be identified.

We investigated whether inter-patient variation in the dynamic trajectory of hemoglobin (Hb), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) can prognosticate overall survival (OS) in de novo mHSPC. This is a secondary analysis of the LATITUDE trial in which high-risk de novo mHSPC patients were randomly assigned to receive either androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) plus abiraterone or ADT plus placebo. We used a five-fold cross-validated joint model approach to determine the association of temporal changes in the serological markers with OS.

Warm dense matter (WDM) represents a highly excited state that lies at the intersection of solids, plasmas, and liquids and that cannot be described by equilibrium theories. The transient nature of this state when created in a laboratory, as well as the difficulties in probing the strongly coupled interactions between the electrons and the ions, make it challenging to develop a complete understanding of matter in this regime. In this work, by exciting isolated ∼8  nm copper nanoparticles with a femtosecond laser below the ablation threshold, we create uniformly excited WDM.

Recurrent Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: The Current Treatment Options.

Cancers (Basel)

May 2023

Coordinator of the International Head and Neck Scientific Group, 35100 Padua, Italy.

Differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC) have an excellent prognosis, but this is sometimes overshadowed by tumor recurrences following initial treatment (approximately 15% of cases during follow-up), due to unrecognized disease extent at initial diagnosis or a more aggressive tumor biology, which are the usual risk factors. The possible sites of recurrence are local, regional, or distant. Local and regional recurrences can usually be successfully managed with surgery and radioiodine therapy, as are some isolated distant recurrences, such as bone metastases.

Stomata are pores found in the epidermis of stems or leaves that modulate both plant gas exchange and water/nutrient uptake. The development and function of plant stomata are regulated by a diverse range of environmental cues. However, how carbohydrate status in preexisting leaves might determine systemic stomatal formation within newly developing leaves has remained obscure.
