The value of 'data-enabled', digital healthcare is evolving rapidly, as demonstrated in the COVID-19 pandemic, and its successful implementation remains complex and challenging. Harmonisation (within/between healthcare systems) of infrastructure and implementation strategies has the potential to promote safe, equitable and accessible digital healthcare, but guidance for implementation is lacking. Using respiratory technologies as an example, our scoping review process will capture and review the published research between 12th December 2013 to 12th December 2023.

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) typically presents with asymptomatic, early-stage disease that is monitored until disease progression ('treatment-naïve' CLL). The objective of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility and preliminary safety of an exercise program in treatment-naïve CLL. We also sought to preliminarily assess the impact of the exercise program on disease activity, as it has been proposed that exercise training may reduce disease outgrowth in treatment-naïve CLL.

Background: Childhood abuse (CA) is a risk factor for trauma-related disorders including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). This severe form of interpersonal trauma may result in "identification with the aggressor" (IWA), in which the individual may take on the beliefs, perspectives, and behaviors of the perpetrator. Although previous evidence suggests that IWA may be particularly related to CPTSD as compared to PTSD, there has been no study that investigated this hypothesis.

School of Biodiversity, One Health, and Veterinary Medicine, College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Lack of data on the aetiology of livestock diseases constrains effective interventions to improve livelihoods, food security and public health. Livestock abortion is an important disease syndrome affecting productivity and public health. Several pathogens are associated with livestock abortions but across Africa surveillance data rarely include information from abortions, little is known about aetiology and impacts, and data are not available to inform interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • The implementation of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) and grouping approaches requires effective and cost-efficient assays for early hazard screening, particularly for nanomaterials (NMs).
  • Oxidative potential (OP), indicating a substance’s ability to produce harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), is a key factor in assessing potential oxidative damage, often measured using the ferric reducing ability of serum (FRAS) assay.
  • A modified 96-well format of the FRAS assay enhances user-friendliness and throughput, allowing for simultaneous screening of multiple NMs, although it shows slightly lower precision than the original cuvette-based method while still maintaining acceptable variability in results.

Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium responsible for listeriosis, is an environmental and food-borne pathogen that poses a particular risk to pregnant women and the elderly. While traditionally associated with animal products, ready-to-eat salads are increasingly recognised as a source of Listeria outbreaks. However, little is known about the potential virulence of Listeria isolates from the fresh produce environment.

Conserv Physiol

November 2024

Scottish Oceans Institute, University of St Andrews, Gatty Marine Laboratory, Institiud Chuantan na h-Alba, East Sands, St Andrews, Scotland, KY16 8LB, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Catch-and-release angling, while popular and important for research, can cause significant physiological stress in fish, especially in the understudied flapper skate.
  • A study in Scotland found that flapper skates showed mild metabolic and respiratory acidosis due to angling, with increased stress linked to warmer temperatures and longer fight times.
  • To minimize stress and improve survival rates, it's recommended to reduce fight times and handling by employing techniques like shading and irrigation during the capture process.

Cerebral autoregulation plays a key physiological role by limiting blood flow changes in the face of pressure fluctuations. Although the involved cellular processes are mechanically driven, the quantification of haemodynamic forces in in-vivo settings remains extremely difficult and uncertain. In this work, we propose a novel computational framework for evaluating the blood flow dynamics across networks of myogenically active cerebral arteries, which can modulate their muscular tone to stabilize flow (and perfusion pressure) as well as to limit vascular intramural stress.

Composite robots often encounter difficulties due to changes in illumination, external disturbances, reflective surface effects, and cumulative errors. These challenges significantly hinder their capabilities in environmental perception and the accuracy and reliability of pose estimation. We propose a nonlinear optimization approach to overcome these issues to develop an integrated localization and navigation framework, IIVL-LM (IMU, Infrared, Vision, and LiDAR Fusion for Localization and Mapping).
