This work prepared a type of diblock copolymer with thermo- and photosensitivity in ionic liquids (ILs). P(,-dimethylacrylamide) (compatible with ILs) was prepared as one segment, while butyl acrylate (BA) and 4-phenylazophenylmethacrylate (AzoMA) were copolymerized as another segment P(AzoMA--BA) with stimuli responsiveness. The diblock copolymer showed tunable lower critical micellization temperature (LCMT) in two mixed imidazole ionic liquids.

Allometry in crustaceans is typically considered growth over several instars primarily because crustaceans are presumed to grow only during ecdysis (discontinuous growth). Using theoretical distributions of the sizes of two morphometric variables over several instars, four theoretical instar allometry models are postulated: continuous allometry (indiscrete and discrete); discontinuous allometry (indiscrete and discrete); mixed allometry (simple or complex); and two-rate continuous allometry. The estimates of proportions of allometry within the instars are determined using Y = f(X) and X = f(Y) for variables X and Y.

The serotonergic 5-HT receptor is known to be involved in both impulsivity and anxiety-related behavior. Although anxiety and impulsivity are different constructs, it has been shown that anxiogenesis can result in impulsiveness. It is therefore important to determine if the 5-HT receptor is involved in the commission of impulsive actions independent of its effects on anxiety.

In males of a variety of species, administration of progesterone during adulthood has been shown to decrease the expression of consummatory sexual behaviors and androgen receptors. However, it remains to be determined if the progesterone-induced decrease in androgen-receptor signaling and consummatory sexual behaviors correspond with less of a preference for a sexually receptive female relative to another male, a behavioral phenotype indicative of sexual motivation. Consistent with the effects of progesterone reported in males of other species, progesterone-treated rats, relative to vehicle-treated rats, exhibited fewer intromissions and ejaculations.

There are a multitude of behaviors that child sexual abusers use to 'groom' children into becoming vulnerable to abuse. In this study of 277 adult survivors of child sexual abuse, participants advised the many ways they were groomed into being abused by up to three perpetrators. The effects of three categories of grooming (Verbal Coercion, Grooming that used Drugs/Alcohol, and Threatening/Violent Grooming) were examined for their effects on trauma symptom severity.

Organizational effects of testosterone on learning strategy preference and muscarinic receptor binding in prepubertal rats.

Horm Behav

April 2019

Tulane University, Department of Psychology, New Orleans, LA 70118, United States of America; Tulane University, Program in Neuroscience, New Orleans, LA 70118, United States of America.

Prior to puberty, male rats, but not female rats, prefer a striatum-based stimulus-response learning strategy rather than a hippocampus-based place strategy on a water maze task that can be solved using either strategy. Neurochemically, learning strategy preference has been linked to the ratio of cholinergic muscarinic receptor binding in the hippocampus relative to the striatum, with lower ratios displayed by males compared to females and by stimulus-response learners compared to place learners. Sex differences in a variety of different behaviors are established by the organizational influence of testosterone on brain development.

In this retrospective study of 244 adult survivors of child sexual abuse (CSA), their experiences of childhood polyvictimization were analyzed as to their cumulative effect on trauma symptoms, education, and income levels. The data were gathered by anonymously sampling adult survivors of CSA from websites that were specific to this population (such as online peer support groups). Their experiences of victimization were examined as to Cumulative Polyvictimization, Witnessing Traumas (such as witnessing intimate partner violence), and Experiencing Traumas (such as child physical abuse).

The national epidemic of diabetes and the exposure of Vietnam veterans to Agent Orange has led to insulin resistance requiring concentrated insulin (U-500 regular [U-500R] insulin) for glycemic control. Initiation of U-500R insulin is limited to endocrinology expertise housed at "hub" Veterans Health Administration locations hours away from smaller "spoke" facilities. To overcome potential health care disparities and improve patient safety, a program was developed ensuring that all clinicians could co-manage U-500R insulin.

Director, James F. Drane Bioethics Institute, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro, PA, USA.

The recent efforts for revitalizing traditional Iranian medicine (TIM) have shaped two main streams: The quackery traditional iranian medicine (QTIM) and the academic traditional iranian medicine (ATIM). The QTIM encompasses a wide range of practitioners with various backgrounds who work outside the academic arena and mostly address the public. These practitioners have no solid bases or limited boundaries for their claims.

Is Social Work Prepared for Diversity in Hospice and Palliative Care?

Health Soc Work

February 2018

Christine M. Rine, PhD, is assistant professor, Department of Social Work, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, 235 Scotland Road, Hendricks Hall G-37, Edinboro, PA 16444; e-mail:

The purpose of this article is to assess current and future trends in hospice and palliative care with the objective of informing culturally appropriate best practice for social work. Concern for the intersectionality of racial, ethnic, social, and other differences in end-of-life (EOL) care is imperative given the ever growing range of diversity characteristics among the increasing aging populations in the United States. A review of literature from the current decade that is pertinent to the profession contributes to the ability of social work to consider evidence and build agreement germane to EOL practice settings.

The orbital bones are thin and exposed, making the orbital walls vulnerable to fractures. The floor of the orbit is the weakest portion of this 4-sided pyramid structure. Blunt force trauma is the primary mechanism of injury in young men between the ages of 18 and 30 years.

The trauma symptoms of child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors don't end with the abuse, or even with the advent of adulthood. Instead, these symptoms can persist into all the realms of a survivor's life, including education, which sets the foundation for career advancement. This retrospective study of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (n=260) examined the relationships between trauma symptoms, dissociation, dissociative amnesia, anxiety, depression, sleep problems and higher education attainment.

Administration of an oxytocin receptor antagonist attenuates sexual motivation in male rats.

Horm Behav

August 2017

Franklin and Marshall College, Department of Psychology, United States; Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Department of Psychology, United States. Electronic address:

In male rats, oxytocin impacts both sexual arousal and certain types of consummatory sexual behaviors. However, the role of oxytocin in the motivational aspects of sexual behavior has received limited attention. Given the role that oxytocin signaling plays in consummatory sexual behaviors, it was hypothesized that pharmacological attenuation of oxytocin signaling would reduce sexual motivation in male rats.
