Background: The examination of psychometric properties in instruments measuring abuse of older people (AOP) is a crucial area of study that has, unfortunately, received relatively little attention. Poor psychometric properties in AOP measurement instruments can significantly contribute to inconsistencies in prevalence estimates, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the magnitude of the problem at national, regional, and global levels.

Objectives: This review rigorously employed the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) guideline on the quality of outcome measures.

Article Synopsis
  • - Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a disease caused by abnormal CTG repeats in a specific gene, leading to muscle weakness and wasting, with limited research on how it affects skeletal muscle over time.
  • - A study with 22 DM1 patients over three years found significant relationships between changes in muscle strength and factors like muscle fiber size, types, and certain proteins involved in muscle function and autophagy.
  • - Results indicate that decreases in specific muscle fiber metrics correlate with muscle strength loss, while strength training may help mitigate accumulation of harmful nuclear foci; further research is necessary to establish reliable biomarkers for muscle strength loss in DM1.

November 2024

Groupe d'Acoustique de l'Université de Sherbrooke, Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Québec, J1K 2R1, Canada; Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music, Media, and Technology, McGill University, Montréal, Québec, H3A 1E3, Canada.

Earplugs' comfort is primarily evaluated through cost-effective laboratory evaluations, yet these evaluations often inadequately capture the multidimensional comfort aspects due to design limitations that do not replicate real-world conditions. This paper introduces a novel laboratory method for comprehensive assessment of the multidimensional comfort aspects of earplugs, combining questionnaire-based evaluations and objective perceptual tests within virtual industrial sound environments replicating in-situ noise exposure. Objective perceptual results confirm that the sound environment affect participants' ability to detect alarms in a noisy environment and comprehend speech-in-noise while wearing earplugs.

Introduction: Research on critical reflection (a process of recognising and challenging assumptions that frame health care practice) has demonstrated strong potential for making health care more collaborative and equitable, yet its enactment within team-based health care remains underexplored. We conducted a narrative review to advance understanding of how critical reflection develops, occurs in and impacts team-based practice and care.

Methods: We searched three databases (Medline, CINAHL and Scopus) for articles related to the concepts of critical reflection and/or critically reflective practice in the context of team-based health care and examined how teams engage with those theoretical concepts, to inform ideas for a new approach to support critically reflective practice.

Health generally represents what nurses should strive for in their practice. However, due to their general nature, the definitions of health are problematic for designing a health-oriented nursing practice. Rather than attempting to design it through a conceptual definition of what health is, some authors from the human sciences suggest using models that allow for a concrete commitment to health.

Increasing evidence suggests that the muscle stem cell (MuSC) pool is heterogeneous. In particular, a rare subset of PAX7-positive MuSCs that has never expressed the myogenic regulatory factor MYF5 displays unique self-renewal and engraftment characteristics. However, the scarcity and limited availability of protein markers make the characterization of these cells challenging.

Objective: Evaluate the ability of an extended version of the 3 M Eargage to estimate the earcanal size and assess the likelihood that a particular earplug can fit an individual's earcanal, ultimately serving as a tool for selecting earplugs in the field.

Design: Earcanal morphology, assessed through earcanal earmolds scans, is compared to earcanal size assessed with the extended eargage (EE) via box plots and Pearson linear correlations coefficients. Relations between attenuation measured on participants (for 6 different earplugs) and their earcanal size assessed with the EE are established via comparison tests.
