International Consensus Statement on Platelet Function and Genetic Testing in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: 2024 Update.

Current evidence indicates that dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin plus a P2Y inhibitor is essential for the prevention of thrombotic events after percutaneous coronary interventions. However, dual antiplatelet therapy is associated with increased bleeding which may outweigh the benefits. This has set the foundations for customizing antiplatelet treatments to the individual patient.

Feasibility of Non-Invasive Sentinel Lymph Node Identification in Early-Stage NSCLC Through Ultrasound Guided Intra-Tumoral Injection of Tc-Nanocolloid and Iodinated Contrast Agent During Navigation Bronchoscopy.

: As the first sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) in lung cancer are most likely to harbor metastasis, their non-invasive identification could have a significant role in future treatments. We investigated the feasibility of adding an SLN procedure to a diagnostic navigation bronchoscopy. : Thirty-one patients were included for injection of Tc-nanocolloid and an iodinated contrast agent intra-/peritumorally and assessment of tracer dissipation via SPECT and CBCT imaging.

Continuous Tuning of Intersystem Crossing Times in Rose Bengal Water/Methanol Solutions.

We use femtosecond transient broadband absorption spectroscopy (TAS) to characterize Rose Bengal in water/methanol solutions and reveal a continuous tunability of intersystem crossing (ISC) times by changing the mole fraction of the solvents. We find that the transients of excited state absorptions (ESAs) in Rose Bengal at ∼430 nm can be attributed to transitions from the singlet state S, with decay times of 74 ps via ISC in pure water and up to 405 ps in pure methanol. TA measurements at near-infrared wavelengths, on the other hand, reveal the rise of an ESA at ∼1080 nm from the triplet state T with time constants of 68 and 491 ps in pure water and methanol, respectively, strongly supporting the associated UV-vis TAS data.

Carmaphycin B-Based Proteasome Inhibitors to Treat Human African Trypanosomiasis: Structure-Activity Relationship and Efficacy.

The proteasome is essential for eukaryotic cell proteostasis, and inhibitors of the 20S proteasome are progressing preclinically and clinically as antiparasitics. We screened, the causative agent of human and animal African trypanosomiasis, with a set of 27 carmaphycin B analogs, irreversible epoxyketone inhibitors that were originally developed to inhibit the20S (Pf20S). The structure-activity relationship was distinct from that of the human c20S antitarget by the acceptance of d-amino acids at the P3 position of the peptidyl backbone to yield compounds with greatly decreased toxicity to human cells.

The current status of brachytherapy in Europe - A GEC-ESTRO Brachy-HERO survey.

A survey regarding utilisation of brachytherapy was distributed to European brachytherapy professionals. Eighty replies from 26 countries were received, two of which were outside Europe. The replies showed that brachytherapy is still widely used.

We present the first comprehensive analysis of low-temperature PL from two-dimensional (2D) PbS nanoplatelets (NPLs).

Cyclic dimeric GMP (c-di-GMP) is a widespread bacterial second messenger that controls a variety of cellular functions, including protein and polysaccharide secretion, motility, cell division, cell development, and biofilm formation, and contributes to the virulence of some important bacterial pathogens. While the genes for diguanylate cyclases and c-di-GMP hydrolases (active or mutated) can be easily identified in microbial genomes, the list of c-di-GMP receptor domains is quite limited, and only two of them, PliZ and MshEN, are found across multiple bacterial phyla. Recently, a new c-di-GMP receptor protein, named CdgR or ComFB, has been identified in cyanobacteria and shown to regulate their cell size and, more recently, natural competence.

Brain metastases are frequent in neuropathology practices; however, the literature on their distribution is frequently derived from imaging studies. This work examined metastases of lung cancer to the brain through the lens of pathology specimens. All brain surgical pathology cases accessioned from 2011-2020 were retrieved from a regional laboratory.

Participatory development of evidence-based patient narrative videos for patients with eating disorders: a methodological approach and pilot data.

Background: Patient narratives can best be defined as personal stories of persons previously or currently affected by a physical or mental health disorder. The collaborative development and implementation of such narratives reflects a participatory approach between researchers, patients, and members of the public towards the development of new interventions. Patient narratives can foster feelings of support and belonging, as well as increase hope and motivation towards recovery.

Exploring the cognitive underpinnings of early hominin stone tool use through an experimental EEG approach.

Technological innovation has been crucial in the evolution of our lineage, with tool use and production linked to complex cognitive processes. While previous research has examined the cognitive demands of early stone toolmaking, the neurocognitive aspects of early hominin tool use remain largely underexplored. This study relies on electroencephalography to investigate brain activation patterns associated with two distinct early hominin tool-using behaviors: forceful hammerstone percussion, practiced by both humans and non-human primates and linked to the earliest proposed stone tool industries, and precise flake cutting, an exclusive hominin behavior typically associated with the Oldowan.

Effect of burst spikes on linear and nonlinear signal transmission in spiking neurons.

We study the impact of bursts on spike statistics and neural signal transmission. We propose a stochastic burst algorithm that is applied to a burst-free spike train and adds a random number of temporally-jittered burst spikes to each spike. This simple algorithm ignores any possible stimulus-dependence of bursting but allows to relate spectra and signal-transmission characteristics of burst-free and burst-endowed spike trains.

Social cognition is deficient in a wide range of mental disorders, including schizophrenia (SZ). Inferring social signals through the eyes is pivotal for social interaction but remains poorly investigated.

Background And Objectives: α-Gal syndrome is characterized by specific IgE (sIgE) antibodies to the carbohydrate galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal) and delayed onset of allergic symptoms after ingestion of mammalian meat. While tick bites are assumed to mediate sensitization, the immune response to tick bites has not yet been investigated. To investigate the peripheral immune response to tick bites in humans over time.

ATP1A3 dysfunction causes motor hyperexcitability and afterhyperpolarization loss in a dystonia model.

Mutations in the gene encoding the alpha3 Na+/K+-ATPase isoform (ATP1A3) lead to movement disorders that manifest with dystonia, a common neurological symptom with many different origins, but for which the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. We have generated an ATP1A3 mutant mouse that displays motor impairments and a hyperexcitable motor phenotype compatible with dystonia. We show that neurons harboring this mutation are compromised in their ability to extrude raised levels of intracellular sodium, highlighting a profound deficit in neuronal sodium homeostasis.
