Patients who are medically compromised may be at an increased risk of complications and treatment errors following periodontal therapy. A review of the evidence on the topic is presented, in relation to the type of complication reported, of periodontal treatment, and of patients' medical status. Further, a framework for risk assessment and appropriate treatment modifications is introduced, with the aim of facilitating the management of patients with existing comorbidities and reducing the incidence of treatment complications.

Aim: The present multi-centre randomized clinical trial with 12 months of follow-up aimed at studying the added effect of sub-marginal instrumentation before surgical treatment of peri-implantitis.
Materials And Methods: Forty-two patients diagnosed with peri-implantitis were recruited. After a behavioural intervention phase including oral hygiene instructions, patients were randomized to either receiving supra- and sub-marginal instrumentation on their affected implants (control group: 21 patients and 29 implants) or only supra-marginal instrumentation (test group: 21 patients and 24 implants), before undergoing surgery.

Introduction Dental general anaesthetic (DGA) remains one of the main modalities to deliver treatment to paediatric patients. The main central registry system which is used as a proxy measure of DGA provision is the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data on hospital admission of children for dental extractions. This database does not accurately reflect the number of DGAs as it omits non-hospital-based providers and the data includes treatment under sedation.

Background: Dental implants have been widely utilised as a treatment modality for prosthetic rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the implant and prosthetic survival rate, changes in marginal bone level, and patient satisfaction outcomes with the use of three implants to support a fixed prosthesis in the edentulous mandible.
Methods: A comprehensive electronic search was performed in the MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane databases to retrieve studies that met the selection criteria.
Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a relatively rare condition which has a profound impact not only on the patient but also on those around them. There is no cure for TN, and the management of the condition is complex. The most effective forms of treatment are either through medication, neurosurgery, or combination of the two.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a severe adverse condition affecting patients exposed to specific types of medications. Previous studies have highlighted that osteonecrosis of the jaw is triggered by invasive dental procedures and can be very challenging to manage, especially in patients with cancer. The primary aim of this review was to analyse all available evidence on the management (surgical and/or conservative) of medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) in patients with a history of antiangiogenic drugs therapy and who had not been previously exposed to any antiresorptive drug treatments.

Introduction Informed consent is the 'permission or agreement' given by the patient for a proposed action. This paper explores the clinician's role in obtaining informed consent, provides an overview of consent and parental responsibility in the UK, and presents practical adjuncts to aid dental professionals in ascertaining who has parental responsibility to delineate persons capable of providing assent on behalf of an underage patient.Consent and parental responsibility While the principles of consent have largely stayed constant with time, subtleties in parental responsibility legislation exist in different regions of the UK.

The early engraftment phase of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be associated with a number of oromucosal infective complications. While the routine use of prophylactic acyclovir has reduced the incidence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) reactivation, there is an increasing prevalence of acyclovir resistance within this cohort of patients. The authors present a case of acyclovir-resistant HSV reactivation in a 26-year-old woman 7 days post T-deplete sibling allograft on a background of combined cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation myeloablative conditioning, successfully treated with foscarnet and cidofovir therapy and discuss the differential diagnoses for early/late engraftment oral disease.

Autistic children and adolescents are at high risk of dental disease and experience oral health inequalities. They consistently show high levels of unmet needs in relation to their oral health and access to dental care. There are no systematic reviews that bring together the evidence on the factors that influence oral hygiene behaviours, and access to and provision of dental care for autistic children and adolescents.

Introduction In the UK, orthodontic speciality training takes place over three years full-time. In addition to the clinical training, there is an expectation that trainees undertake a higher degree. Currently, there is little evidence regarding the impact of undertaking a higher degree on specialist orthodontists.

Human mitochondrial RNase P (mt-RNase P) is responsible for 5' end processing of mitochondrial precursor tRNAs, a vital step in mitochondrial RNA maturation, and is comprised of three protein subunits: TRMT10C, SDR5C1 (HSD10), and PRORP. Pathogenic variants in TRMT10C and SDR5C1 are associated with distinct recessive or x-linked infantile onset disorders, resulting from defects in mitochondrial RNA processing. We report four unrelated families with multisystem disease associated with bi-allelic variants in PRORP, the metallonuclease subunit of mt-RNase P.

Previous research has demonstrated that autistic individuals often experience difficulties accessing dental care, both as a result of autism specific difficulties and practitioners' attitudes towards autism. However, very little research exists that explores dental professionals' experiences of providing care to their autistic patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies UK-based dental professionals' use when working with autistic patients METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, dental professionals (n = 16) from a variety of specialty roles (special care, paediatrics, orthodontics) were interviewed.
