Objective: Here we report our preclinical, proof-of-concept testing to assess the ability of a novel device to correct mitral regurgitation. The Milwaukee Heart device aims to enable any cardiac surgeon to perform high-quality mitral valve repair using a standard annuloplasty ring with a crosshatch of microporous, monofilament suture.

Rare Occurrence of a Symptomatic Persistent Sciatic Artery Aneurysm.

Persistent sciatic artery (PSA) aneurysms are a rare cause of gluteal or lower extremity pain. The persistent sciatic artery is an uncommon congenital vasculature anomaly that presents with variable clinical presentation and is prone to cause an aneurysm, thrombosis, rupture, and possible amputation. Thus, early diagnosis is imperative to prevent further complications.

Introduction: It is important for individuals and families to prepare for potential disasters to enable communities to generate a consolidated response. It is estimated that 30 percent of residents of the fourth largest city in Idaho, Idaho Falls, are not prepared to deal with disasters. A 1-day training workshop for healthcare professionals and students at Idaho State University in Pocatello was organized to build their capacity for acute disaster response and preparedness.

Application and Management of Cultured Epidermal Autografts on Posterior Burns-A 5-Year, Multicenter, Retrospective Review of Outcomes.

Severe burns on the posterior trunk present a treatment challenge in that these surfaces bear the major portion of body weight, with shearing forces exerted when changing the patient from supine to prone position. In their high-volume center at Burn and Reconstructive Centers of America, the authors developed protocols for use of cultured epidermal autografts (CEAs) for coverage of large burns, including those specific to posterior burns. This paper describes techniques and approaches, including milestone timelines, to treat and manage these patients.

Introduction: Seizure activity following spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) can worsen patients' comorbidity. However, data regarding whether seizure prophylaxis for sICH is associated with patients' poor functional outcome is inconclusive. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the relationship between phenytoin prophylaxis and poor functional outcome after sICH.
