Bcl-2 family comprises proapoptotic and antiapoptotic proteins. The balance between these proteins is critical for the survival of the cells. Overexpression of the antiapoptotic protein, Bcl-2, is the hallmark of follicular lymphoma (FL).

Germinal center (GC) B cells undergo apoptosis after B cell receptor (BCR) ligation, unless they receive CD40-mediated survival signal from helper T cells. In the present study, we used a human follicular lymphoma cell line HF1A3, as an in vitro model to study the selection process in germinal centers. We show here that BCR ligation led to immediate ERK1/2 activation and phosphorylations of its downstream targets, Bim EL/L and Bcl-2 (at Ser70) which resulted in short-term survival.

The dynamics of animal populations are greatly influenced by interactions with their natural enemies and food resources. However, quantifying the relative effects of these factors on demographic rates remains a perpetual challenge for animal population ecology. Food scarcity is assumed to limit the growth and to initiate the decline of cyclic herbivore populations, but this has not been verified with physiological health indices.

The addition of rituximab (RTX) to standard chemotherapy has improved the treatment of B-cell malignancies. We show here that RTX and dexamethasone (Dex) induced synergistic apoptosis in follicular lymphoma cell lines. However, apoptosis was delayed by RTX-induced early protective signaling.

Objective: To study the relationship between surgical wound bacterial colonization and the development of surgical site infection (SSI) after lower limb vascular surgery. SSI is a major problem after lower limb vascular surgery. Most SSIs in vascular surgery are caused by Staphylococcal species that are part of normal skin flora.

Background: Erythropoietin therapy should be accompanied by an adequate iron supply in order to avoid functional iron deficiency (FID) related to enhanced erythropoiesis. Therefore, accurate monitoring of the body's iron homeostasis is needed. This study was conducted to investigate whether transferrin receptor (TfR) expression on reticulocytes can reflect iron status in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF).

Objectives: Hepcidin is the key regulator of iron homeostasis. The aims of this study were to determine serum hepcidin concentrations and reference ranges in pregnant women and cord blood of newborns at term and to evaluate the associations between hepcidin concentrations and iron status parameters.
Methods: A total of 191 pregnant women-newborn pairs were studied in Kuopio University Hospital, Finland.

Objective: To investigate the associations between maternal iron status, pregnancy outcome and newborn iron status using sensitive and specific red blood cell indices reflecting iron-deficient erythropoiesis.
Design And Setting: Cross-sectional study in Kuopio University Hospital, Finland.
Population: One hundred and ninety-two pregnant women and their full-term newborns (cord blood).
