Ganglioneuroma of the uterine cervix--a case report.

Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign tumor usually found in the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, or adrenal glands. We present a case of ganglioneuroma arising in the uterine cervix. A 65-year-old woman (gravida 3, para 3, abortus 0) showed vaginal spotting.

Ghrelin suppresses tunicamycin- or thapsigargin-triggered endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated apoptosis in primary cultured rat cortical neuronal cells.

Ghrelin functions as a neuroprotective agent and rescues neurons from various insults. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ghrelin neuroprotection remains to be elucidated. An accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) leads to ER stress and then induces ER stress-mediated cell death.

Use of acupuncture as a treatment method for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndromes.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is the most common category of clinical prostatitis. The etiologic factors of CP/CPPS still remain unknown, and standard therapies often fail to achieve sustainable amelioration of symptoms; therefore, various treatment therapies have been approached. Recently, there is increasing evidence that acupuncture could be a safe and effective treatment in managing CP/CPPS.

Infarction of lesser omental fat mimicking an exophytic pancreatic tumor by sonography.

We report a case of infarction of lesser omental fat in a 30-year-old woman who presented with epigastric pain. Sonography revealed a painful echogenic mass in the epigastrium that could not be separated from the adjacent hyperechoic pancreas and mimicked an exophytic pancreatic tumor. On CT, the mass was identified as an inflammatory lipomatous mass in the lesser sac, leading to the diagnosis of infarction of lesser omental fat.

Feasibility of forward-viewing upper endoscopy for detection of the major duodenal papilla.

Background And Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of forward-viewing upper endoscopy for detection of the major duodenal papilla (MDP) as an indicator of the descending duodenum.

Methods: A total of 338 patients were prospectively enrolled. Upper endoscopy was first performed by a routine method for all patients, and a subsequent straightening endoscopic technique, straightening the loop by withdrawal of the scope, was performed if the MDP was not identified during the routine method.

Analysis of digitalized panorama and cone beam computed tomographic image distortion for the diagnosis of dental implant surgery.

Objectives: To evaluate the tooth image measurements according to the tooth location and to calculate the magnification rate for comparison and analysis in digitalized panoramic and cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images.

Methods: A diagnostic template was fabricated and delivered on the preimplant sites. A 5-mm gutta-percha cone or a metal ball was inserted in the coronal part of each tooth.

Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance are associated with abnormal left ventricular diastolic function and structure independent of blood pressure and fasting plasma glucose level.

Background: Abnormal left ventricular (LV) structure and diastolic function are frequently detected in a variety of heart diseases, and insulin resistance has been suggested to be associated with LV diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). The aims of this study were to determine the association between LVDD or LV structure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) or insulin resistance, and whether or not the associations are independent of age, blood pressure, and plasma glucose level.

Methods: A total of 1599 subjects (1161 men and 398 women), 25-83 years of age, who underwent medical health check-ups at two institutions, were enrolled.

Time-resolved MR angiography for detecting and grading ovarian venous reflux: comparison with conventional venography.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of time-resolved MR angiography (TR-MRA) with that of conventional venography for the detection and grading of ovarian venous reflux, which aid in the diagnosis of pelvic venous congestion.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 19 consecutive patients who underwent TR-MRA and conventional venography. The images were analysed by two radiologists in a randomised "blinded" manner.

Ultrasound-guided biopsy of focal lesions using three-dimensional ultrasound with a matrix array transducer: comparison with 2-dimensional ultrasound in a phantom study.

Objectives: To investigate the feasibility of biopsy-guided 3-dimensional (3D) ultrasound (US) with a matrix array transducer (3D US-MAT), using the lateral and/or elevation tilt modes.

Materials And Methods: Both inexperienced and experienced examiners performed biopsy experiments using a freehand technique on agar-based phantoms with 2-dimensional (2D) US guidance and 3D US-MAT guidance allowing real-time biplane imaging, using the lateral tilt mode and/or elevation tilt mode. Each phantom contained 4 targets of different sizes, and there were 3 different types of phantom, each having a different distance between the target and the surface.

A significant number of sessile serrated adenomas might not be accurately diagnosed in daily practice.

Background/aims: The diagnosis of hyperplastic polyps (HPs) may involve a conglomeration of subgroups of serrated polyps. The diagnosis of HPs may therefore be revisited if this is sessile serrated adenoma (SSA). The aim of this study was to determine clinically and endoscopically relevant information associated with reclassification to SSA.

Factors predicting the response to biofeedback-assisted pelvic floor muscle training for urinary incontinence.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of biofeedback-assisted pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) for urinary incontinence and to determine the patient characteristics predictive of success.

Methods: Clinical and physiologic data of 86 patients with urinary incontinence who had received biofeedback-assisted PFMT were analyzed retrospectively. The clinical response was determined to be a success (requiring no more therapy) or a failure (requiring surgery or other medical therapy) at 3 months after completion of treatment.

An estimation of right- and left-sided central venous catheter insertion depth using measurement of surface landmarks along the course of central veins.

Background: In this study we sought to determine whether the topographical measurement along the course of the central veins can estimate the approximate insertion depths of central venous catheters (CVC).

Methods: Two hundred central venous catheterizations were performed via the right and left internal jugular vein (IJV) or subclavian vein (SCV). The anterior approach, using the sternocleidomastoid muscle as a landmark, was used for IJV catheterization and the infraclavicular approach for SCV.

Treatment of acute ischemic stroke: feasibility of primary or secondary use of a self-expanding stent (Neuroform) during local intra-arterial thrombolysis.

Introduction: We evaluated the feasibility of employing a self-expanding stent (Neuroform) in treatment of acute cerebral ischemia and compared the results of primary and secondary stenting.

Methods: We analyzed the treatment results of 14 acute ischemic stroke patients (11 men and three women; median age, 65 years) who were treated with Neuroform stents. Seven patients received stent placement for primary recanalization and a further seven for secondary recanalization.

Obstructive jaundice caused by Clonorchiasis-associated duodenal papillitis: a case report.

We describe an unusual presentation of Clonorchis sinensis infection with obstructive jaundice due to duodenal papillitis which was relieved dramatically by endoscopic sphincterotomy. A 26-yr-old male presented with complaints of fatigue, weight loss and painless jaundice. The history was significant for frequent ingestion of raw freshwater fish.

Multiple births conceived by assisted reproductive technology in Korea.

Purpose: The recent trends of multiple births (MBs) conceived by assisted reproductive technology (ART) in Korea were analyzed as well as the relationship with maternal age, especially advanced maternal age.

Methods: Data were obtained from the Korean Statistical Information Service and annual ART reports from the ART committee of the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Results: MBs increased from the early 1990s; there was a 275% increase by 2008.

Complete rooming-in care of newborn infants.

Purpose: In Kyung Hee East-West Neo Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, efforts to raise rooming-in care success rate have been undertaken since when the hospital was established in 2006. We intended to analyze our experience over the past 3 years of period and to discuss the advantages of rooming-in.

Methods: We analyzed the rooming-in practice rate, failure rate, and the breast feeding rate.

Cerebral air embolism as a result of inducing pneumoperitoneum after bilobectomy.

A 62-year-old man with lung cancer underwent a right lower bilobectomy of the lung. After resection, we insufflated air through the diaphragm into the peritoneal cavity, and sudden cardiac arrest developed in the patient. A large number of air bubbles were aspirated from the heart and great vessels, and the patient recovered after resuscitation.

Sonographic findings of acute vasitis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the sonographic findings of acute vasitis.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 12 cases of acute vasitis. The following gray scale and color Doppler sonographic features were analyzed: location, echogenicity of the lesion, presence of hydrocele, epididymal involvement, and blood flow within the lesion.

Long-term follow-up clinical courses of cerebellar hemangioblastoma in von hippel-lindau disease : two case reports and a literature review.

Although cerebellar hemangioblastomas are histopathologically benign, they yield a degree of malignant clinical behavior in long-term follow-up. We present two cases of long-term progression of renal cell carcinoma, which had been diagnosed as renal cysts during treatment for cerebellar hemangioblastoma. A 14-year-old male with von Hippel-Lindau disease was admitted for a cerebellar hemangioblastoma with multiple spinal hemangioblastomas and a renal cyst.

Common polymorphisms in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene are associated with risks of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer in women with low serum folate and vitamin B12.

Objective: We evaluated associations between folate, vitamin B12, and the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene, and risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer.

Methods: This multicenter case-control study enrolled 927 Korean women (440 controls, 165 patients with CIN 1, 167 patients with CIN 2/3, and 155 patients with cervical cancer, aged 20-75 years).

The detection and discrimination of malignant and benign focal hepatic lesions: T2 weighted vs diffusion-weighted MRI.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for the detection and characterisation of focal hepatic lesions compared with the use of T(2) weighted imaging.

Method: 45 patients with 97 hepatic lesions (51 malignant lesions and 46 benign lesions) were included in this retrospective study. Malignant hepatic lesions included 12 hepatocellular carcinomas, 26 metastases and 13 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas.

Plasma biomarkers in the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke.

Rapid diagnosis and timely treatment improves the outcome in patients with ischemic stroke, but a rapid and sensitive blood test for ischemic stroke does not exist. This study tested whether a panel of biomarkers might be useful in the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke. Consecutive patients with suspected stroke presenting to the emergency department of a university hospital in Korea were enrolled.
