Background: Acute pancreatitis is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Most acute pancreatitis scoring systems have no pathophysiologic basis when evaluating severity. Such a limitation led to an interest in measuring intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) as a method to predict outcomes in patients with acute pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis is characterized by the premature activation of pancreatic enzymes leading to autodigestion and inflammation, commonly caused by gallstones or chronic alcohol consumption. However, iatrogenic factors, such as migration of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube, can be a cause of acute pancreatitis but are less frequently reported in the literature. This is a case of a 77-year-old male patient with a medical history significant for myasthenia gravis with dysphagia requiring a PEG tube placement who presented with abdominal pain and elevated lipase levels.

Objectives: Patients with unilateral vocal fold paresis and unfavorable posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle synkinesis can be challenging to treat with medialization procedures alone. Arytenoid repositioning procedures are generally considered contraindicated in mobile vocal folds. We present two cases of persistent dysphonia following type I thyroplasty for vocal fold paresis that improved after botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) injection into the PCA muscle.

Azygos vein aneurysms (AVAs) and azygos vein pseudoaneurysms (AVPs) are typically asymptomatic, discovered incidentally, and most often result from idiopathic and congenital factors or conditions that increase central venous pressure. Trauma-related azygos injuries are particularly rare, with a paucity of reported cases resulting from blunt mechanisms. There is no standardized therapeutic approach to traumatic AVA/AVPs, with observation, endovascular, thoracoscopic, and open surgical interventions all represented in the current literature.

Introduction: Teaching learners the benefits and challenges of interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in acute care is best done in the context of authentic patient care rather than classroom settings. Yet differing clinical schedules of students and faculty as well as structured, controlled environments of intensive care units are not conducive to bringing multiple interprofessional learners to the bedside.
Methods: We developed a 2.

The Core Concepts of Pharmacology (CCP) initiative is developing educational resources to transform pharmacology education into a concept-based approach. This study evaluated the quality of global educator-created MCQs in generating items for the pharmacology concept inventory (PCI) instrument and developed as a resource for learning pharmacology fundamental concepts. A panel of 22 global pharmacology experts recruited from the CCP initiative research team participated in the MCQ pilot database design and evaluation.

The importance of proper prosthetic placement has been confirmed in numerous studies. The objective of this study was to compare the planned resection angles to the verified intraoperative angles of femoral and tibial varus/valgus, tibial slope, and femoral flexion for each total knee performed using intramedullary (IM) cut guides for both distal femur and proximal tibia cuts. A total of 1,000 total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) were evaluated for this study.

The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, causing the COVID-19 pandemic, has profoundly impacted global health, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This paper presents a case study highlighting the heightened risk of severe cardiovascular complications following COVID-19 infection. A 61-year-old male with hyperlipidemia was discharged after COVID-19 pneumonia treatment and experienced a severe ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) within a day of discharge.

Actinic keratosis (AK) and seborrheic keratosis (SK) represent prevalent dermatological conditions with distinct clinical characteristics and potential health implications. This article investigates recent strides in dermatological diagnostics, centered on the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology for discerning between AK and SK. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate an artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of accurately distinguishing between stage one and stage two gastric carcinoma based on pathology slides.

Foreign bodies are encountered relatively often within the practice of general surgery. We present a unique case of a rubber, self-retaining, radiopaque "mushroom-tip" Malecot tube placed for fistula drainage control due to an enterocutaneous fistula (ECF) that became a gastrointestinal foreign body. A 24-year-old male presented in shock with gunshot wounds to his right chest and right upper abdomen to a Level I trauma center.

This case report details the challenging presentation of a 68-year-old patient of cardio-circulatory collapse with pericardial effusion and recurrent pleural effusions. Hypotension did not respond to conventional intensive care measures. Despite comprehensive investigations, the underlying cause remained unidentified until intravenous thiamine replacement therapy was administered, restoring normotension and preventing pericardial or pleural effusion recurrence.

This study explores the application of machine learning and deep learning algorithms to facilitate the accurate diagnosis of melanoma, a type of malignant skin cancer, and benign nevi. Leveraging a dataset of 793 dermatological images from the Kaggle online platform (Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States), we developed a model that can accurately differentiate between these lesions based on their distinctive features. The dataset was divided into training (80%), validation (10%), and testing (10%) sets to optimize model performance and ensure its generalizability.
