A hollow viscus injury is an uncommon but potentially dangerous intra-abdominal injury that can result from blunt abdominal trauma. It can be misdiagnosed in patient, particularly when the patient has other concerning findings. Also, diagnosis can be increasingly difficult in a patient with a pre-existing ventral hernia and chronic abdominal pain.

Hemorrhagic Anuria With Acute Kidney Injury After a Single Dose of Acetazolamide: A Case Study of a Rare Side Effect.

Acetazolamide (ACZ) is a relatively commonly used medication in critical illness, glaucoma and altitude sickness. ACZ is sometimes used in the intensive care unit to assist with the treatment of metabolic alkalosis in ventilated patients. This is a case report of a patient who received two doses of ACZ, one week apart, for metabolic alkalosis and subsequently developed renal colic and dysuria that progressed to hemorrhagic anuria and acute kidney injury.

Impact of Injuries on Hospital Resource Utilization Among Trauma Patients Admitted due to Accidents Caused by Farm Animals.

This study examined the impact of injuries on the hospital resource utilization rate among trauma patients admitted to the Johnson City Medical Center (TN, USA), a rural Level I trauma center, due to accidents caused by farm animals. A total of 52 patients aged >3 years were studied, with the average age being 44 years. Patients above 65 years of age made up almost a quarter of the study population (23%); 63% of the patient population were male.

Impact of Pocket Insulin Dosing Guide on Utilization of Basal/Bolus Insulin by Internal Medicine Resident Physicians.

Introduction Basal/bolus insulin (BBI) is superior to sliding scale insulin (SSI) for diabetic patients admitted to hospital general medicine and surgery services, but little has been published on strategies to promote the utilization of BBI by resident physicians. New approaches that promote the effective management of hyperglycemia in hospitals need to be developed. Materials and methods  A prospective study with historical controls was conducted to evaluate the impact of a pocket insulin dosing guide on the diabetes management practices of internal medicine resident physicians at the Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine, rotating on general medicine.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Our objective was to study nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a relevant risk factor associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with and without cirrhosis. HCC is a common cancer worldwide that predominantly involves patients with hepatic cirrhosis. HCC has recently been linked to NAFLD, the hepatic manifestation of obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Reflections from an Undergraduate Student Peer Facilitator in the Team Up for Healthy Living School-Based Obesity Prevention Project.

was a cluster-randomized trial to evaluate a cross-peer school-based obesity prevention program in Southern Appalachia. Undergraduate students from the disciplines of Kinesiology, Nutrition, and Public Health were trained as peer facilitators to deliver an 8-week curriculum in high school classes. The focus of the curriculum was on improving diet and physical activity with an additional emphasis on enhancing leadership and communication skills.

Soft tissue calcification secondary to imatinib mesylate in a patient with gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Imatinib mesylate has been associated with the changes in bone turnover. We report a case of the development of tissue calcification in a patient on long-term therapy with this drug. A 48-year-old male patient with gastrointestinal stromal tumor and liver metastasis complained of abdominal pain.

Prolonged survival with continuous infusion topotecan: a report of 2 cases.

Two patients with solid tumors were treated with 21-day continuous infusion topotecan as palliation therapy. Case 1: A 10-year-old girl was diagnosed with progressive, metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. Twenty-one-day continuous infusion topotecan was started and she has had a partial response.

A comparison of the mismatch negativity and a differential waveform response.

A mismatch negativity response (MMN) and a new differential waveform were derived in an effort to evaluate a neural refractory or recovery effect in adult listeners. The MMN was elicited using oddball test runs in which the standard and deviant stimuli differed in frequency To derive the differential waveform, the same standard and deviant stimuli were presented alone. MMN responses were obtained by subtracting the averaged responses to standards from the deviants.

Interaction between feeding method and co-sleeping on maternal-newborn sleep.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that breastfed newborns spend more time awake than bottle-fed newborns, breastfeeding mothers have more fragmented sleep than bottle-feeding mothers, and mother-newborn sleeping arrangements may affect the sleep/wake pattern of mother-newborn pairs.

Objective: To address the unsolved question of whether there is an interaction between type of feeding and sleeping arrangements that affects postpartum sleep during the 4th postpartum week.

Design: Correlational, two-way design using feeding method and location of newborn at night as independent variables, and sleep patterns as the dependent variables.
