Introduction: Lingual squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is an aggressive malignancy that carries significant mortality risk and the potential for cardiac metastasis. The authors performed a systematic review designed to characterize disease progression of LSCC cardiac metastasis by evaluating patient demographics, characteristics, management, and clinical outcomes.

Methods: Two authors independently screened articles in Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews up until December 2019 for study eligibility.

The capacity to designate a surrogate (CDS) is not simply another kind of medical decision-making capacity (DMC). A patient with DMC can express a preference, understand information relevant to that choice, appreciate the significance of that information for their clinical condition, and reason about their choice in light of their goals and values. In contrast, a patient can possess the CDS even if they cannot appreciate their condition or reason about the relative risks and benefits of their options.

Lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) neurons expressing the neuropeptide orexin (OX) are implicated in obesity and anxio-depression. However, these neurons release OX as well as a host of other proteins that might contribute to normal physiology and disease states. We hypothesized that delta-like homolog 1 (DLK1), a protein reported to be co-expressed by all OX neurons, contributes to the regulation of energy balance and/or anxio-depression.

Goal: The aim of this study was to determine the burden of nonautoimmune hemolytic anemia (NAHA) in hospitalized patients with coexisting alcoholic liver disease (ALD), identify risk factors for NAHA in ALD and describe the hospitalization outcomes.

Background: ALD can result in structural and metabolic alterations in the red-blood cell membrane leading to premature destruction of erythrocytes and hemolytic anemia of varying severity.

Study: Hospitalized ALD patients with concomitant NAHA were identified in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database using International Classification of Diseases-9 codes from 2009 to 2014.

Surgeon subspecialty training and practice landscape are formative in diagnostic evaluation and treatment recommendations. Varying recommendations can have substantial impact on patients' care pathways and outcomes. We investigated intra- and interobserver reliability of treatment predictions for total hip arthroplasty (THA) between surgeons performing arthroplasty and/or arthroscopic hip preservation surgery.

Although pericardial lipomas are both rare and benign, rapid or excessive growth can induce potentially fatal conditions such as pericarditis, arrhythmia, and cardiac tamponade. This case illustrates an example where a 65-year-old with atypical chest tightness unveiled a 10 × 15 cm anterior pericardial mass with circumferential effusion and progressive deterioration to cardiac tamponade. Initial transthoracic echocardiogram imaging was technically difficult in this patient due to habitus and body mass, which failed to illustrate underlying effusion.

A Pilot Study Examining the Effects of Educational Setting and Stress on Multitasking Among Medical Students.

Med Sci Educ

March 2019

Department of Media and Information, Michigan State University, 404 Wilson Rd., Room 413 Communication Arts and Sciences Building, East Lansing, MI 48824 USA.

This study examines multitasking with media and technology among medical students across four learning contexts (lecture, lab, team-based learning, and homework) and whether stress moderates the relationship between multitasking and academic performance. The proliferation of technology simultaneously used for learning, entertainment, and socialization facilitates multitasking in learning environments. There is comparatively little research on multitasking behavior among medical students.

Introduction: The diagnoses of voice disorders, as well as treatment outcomes, are often tracked using visual (eg, stroboscopic images), auditory (eg, perceptual ratings), objective (eg, from acoustic or aerodynamic signals), and patient report (eg, Voice Handicap Index and Voice-Related Quality of Life) measures. However, many of these measures are known to have low to moderate sensitivity and specificity for detecting changes in vocal characteristics, including vocal quality.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare changes in estimated pitch strength (PS) with other conventionally used acoustic measures based on the cepstral peak prominence (smoothed cepstral peak prominence, cepstral spectral index of dysphonia, and acoustic voice quality index), and clinical judgments of voice quality (GRBAS [grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain] scale) following laryngeal framework surgery.

Purpose: One in eight women will develop breast cancer, 15-20% of whom will have triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive breast cancer with no current targeted therapy. We have demonstrated that riluzole, an FDA-approved drug for treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, inhibits growth of TNBC. In this study, we explore potential synergism between riluzole and paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic agent commonly used to treat TNBC, in regulating TNBC proliferation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis.
