December 2024

The State Key Laboratory for Biology of Plant Diseases and Insect Pests, Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing 100193, China.

The beet armyworm (Hübner), a global pest, feeds on and affects a wide range of crops. Its long-distance migration with the East Asian monsoon frequently causes large-scale outbreaks in East and Southeast Asia. This pest mainly breeds in tropical regions in the winter season every year; however, few studies have investigated associations with its population movements in this region.

Sphingosine kinases (SPHKs) are essential enzymes that catalyze the phosphorylation of sphingosine to produce sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), which plays pivotal roles in inflammation and immune regulation. In this study, genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) identified the gene as closely associated with the resistance of yellow drum () to . Structural prediction showed that YDSPHK1 contains a typical diacylglycerol kinase catalytic (DAGKc) domain (154-291 aa).

Accurate protein secondary structure prediction (PSSP) plays a crucial role in biopharmaceutics and disease diagnosis. Current prediction methods are mainly based on multiple sequence alignment (MSA) encoding and collaborative operations of diverse networks. However, existing encoding approaches lead to poor feature space utilization, and encoding quality decreases with fewer homologous proteins.

This study proposes a new hybrid machine learning (ML) model for the early and accurate diagnosis of heart disease. The proposed model is a combination of two powerful ensemble ML models, namely ExtraTreeClassifier (ETC) and XGBoost (XGB), resulting in a hybrid model named ETCXGB. At first, all the features of the utilized heart disease dataset were given as input to the ETC model, which processed it by extracting the predicted probabilities and produced an output.

In seasonally stratified marine environments, the dynamics of benthic-pelagic coupling plays a crucial role in shaping food web structures and fisheries production. We examined fish food web structures across three distinct shelf areas in the Southern Sea of Korea (SSK) during both stratified (summer) and mixed (spring) water conditions using stable isotopes of carbon (δC) and nitrogen (δN). In spring, fish communities exhibited a broader range of δC values compared with summer, indicating more diverse feeding strategies.

Henan Key Laboratory of Biomolecular Recognition and Sensing, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shangqiu Normal University, Shangqiu, 476000, PR China. Electronic address:

Pre-designed core-shell metal-organic frameworks (MOFs@MOFs) with customized functionalities can enhance the material properties compared to conventional single MOFs. The porous carbon composites derived from MOFs@MOFs also have excellent functionality due to the presence of multiple metal/metal oxide nanoparticles. This paper synthesized a novel MOFs@MOFs composite (MIL-101(Fe)@Ni-MOF) with a core-shell structure with MIL-101(Fe) as the core and Ni-MOF as the shell.

It is significant to study the stability of surrounding rock in soft rock tunnels to ensure construction safety and improve efficiency. Through triaxial shear tests on soft rock at various confining pressures, we observed the failure characteristics transitioning from strain softening to strain hardening as confining pressure increases. An improved Hoek-Brown strength criterion has been proposed to characterize the critical confining pressure effect of soft rock, with tensile strength in the tensile zone aligning with experimental results, showing an error of less than 5%.

Space payloads in orbit are vulnerable to small vibrations from satellite platforms, which can degrade their performance. Traditional methods typically involve installing a passive vibration isolation system between the platform and the payload. However, such systems are usually effective only for high-frequency, large-amplitude vibrations and perform poorly in isolating low-frequency vibrations and resonances below 10 Hz.

Lab of Low-Dimensional Materials Chemistry, Key Laboratory for Ultrafine Materials of Ministry of Education, Frontier Science Center of the Materials Biology and Dynamic Chemistry, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Hierarchical Nanomaterials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is promising in cancer therapy by accelerating tumor cell death, whose therapeutic efficacy, however, is greatly limited by the hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and the antioxidant defense. Amplification of oxidative stress has been successfully employed for tumor therapy, but the interactions between cancer cells and the other factors of TME usually lead to inadequate tumor treatments. To tackle this issue, we develop a pH/redox dual-responsive nanomedicine based on the remodeling of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) for multi-pronged amplification of ROS (ZnPP@FQOS).

Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor inhibits neuroinflammation through autophagy-mediated α-synuclein degradation.

Arch Gerontol Geriatr

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Tongji Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, 200065, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the loss of dopamine neurons and is influenced by α-synuclein aggregation and neuroinflammation, with microglia playing a key role.
  • Previous research identified mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) as a potential inhibitor of α-synuclein accumulation and neuroinflammation, though its molecular mechanisms were not fully understood.
  • This study found that reducing MANF expression increased inflammation (TNF-α), while exogenous MANF promoted autophagy, reduced α-synuclein levels, and inhibited neuroinflammation, suggesting that MANF could be a therapeutic target for PD through its role in autophagy.

January 2025

Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Optogenetic Techniques for Cell Metabolism, Shanghai Key Laboratory of New Drug Design, and School of Pharmacy, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai 200237, P. R. China.

The efficient construction of chiral aryl-containing organosilicon frameworks via catalytic enantioselective three-component silylarylation of alkenes remains a great challenge. Herein, a photoredox/nickel dual-catalytic asymmetric protocol has been disclosed by using a chiral biimidazoline (BiIM) as the ligand, silylboranes as the silyl radical precursors, aryl bromides as the coupling partners, and morpholine as the promoter. Remarkably, the reaction features mild and green conditions, high reaction efficiency, and excellent enantioselectivity, enabling the facile synthesis of valuable chiral tropic acid and sila-isoflavanone structures.
