Current guidelines recommend adding long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) in patients with uncontrolled asthma, despite the use of moderate to high doses of inhaled steroid-long-acting beta agonists (ICS/LABA). This study aims to analyze the factors related to the prescription of add-on LAMA in clinical practice for asthma patients, shedding light on physicians' preferences. This study included adult asthma patients on add-on LAMA and ICS/LABA monitored for at least one year in a national registry comprising 2053 asthmatics.

Pediatric Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: Degree of Nystagmus and Concurrent Dizziness Differs from Adult BPPV.

J Clin Med

March 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Hallym University College of Medicine, Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, Seoul 07441, Republic of Korea.

: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by brief, intense episodes of vertigo triggered by abrupt changes in head position. It is generally accepted as being most common in adults, while it is regarded as rare in children. It is necessary to compare the disease between pediatric and adult patients for a better understanding of the disease's characteristics and its natural history.

Treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antacids affects the gastrointestinal absorption of levothyroxine sodium (LT4) tablets. Patients with hypothyroidism taking LT4 and PPIs or antacids, thus, require appropriate monitoring. The objective of this study was to determine whether a soft gelatin capsule of LT4 (Tirosint) would obviate the effect of PPIs on LT4 absorption.

Electrical promontory stimulation test using a portable peripheral nerve stimulator with an ear canal electrode.

Auris Nasus Larynx

February 2024

Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan; Department of Otolaryngology, International University of Health and Welfare, Tochigi, Japan.

Objective: An intact cochlear nerve is necessary for successful cochlear implantation (CI). Although the promontory stimulation test (PST) using a promontory stimulator (PS) and a transtympanic needle electrode is invasive, it is still commonly used to verify cochlear nerve function. PSs are currently unavailable because they are no longer manufactured; however, considering that PST continues to be beneficial in certain situations, alternative equipment is needed.

Chronic Otitis Media (COM) is a chronic inflammation of the middle ear and mastoid with persistent membrane perforation and hearing loss. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and NOD like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) play an important role in bone metabolism. The aim of the study was to investigate the role of OPG and NLRP3 gene polymorphism on ossicular chain resorption in COM.

Mutations in the OTOF gene are a common cause of hereditary hearing loss and the main cause of auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). Although it is reported that most of the patients with OTOF mutations have stable, congenital or prelingual onset severe-to-profound hearing loss, some patients show atypical clinical phenotypes, and the genotype-phenotype correlation in patients with OTOF mutations is not yet fully understood. In this study, we aimed to reveal detailed clinical characteristics of OTOF-related hearing loss patients and the genotype-phenotype correlation.

Influenza vaccine showed a good preventive effect against influenza-associated hospitalization among elderly patients, during the 2016/17 season in Japan.

J Infect Chemother

November 2018

Department of Pediatrics, Keiyu Hospital, 3-7-3, Minatomirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama City, Kanagawa, 220-0012, Japan. Electronic address:

The 2016/17 influenza season in Japan was characterized by a predominance of influenza A (H3N2) activity; with H3N2 accounting for 85% of all detected influenza virus infections. We assessed the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of an inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (IIV4) in adult patients, using a test-negative case-control design study based on the results of a rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT). Between November 2016 and March 2017, a total of 1048 adult patients were enrolled: including 363 RIDT positive for influenza A, 9 RIDT-positive for influenza B, and 676 RIDT-negative.
