April 2025

State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis, Department of Chemistry, Hong Kong Baptist University, 224 Waterloo Road, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, SAR, China. Electronic address:

Bile acids, a representative diagnostic indicator of liver function, are used to visualize the extent of liver injury. Numerous studies have shown that triclosan (TCS) exposure leads to abnormal bile acid metabolism. As a result, there is a requirement to develop a fast and smart means to quantitatively monitor abnormal bile acids from exposure to triclosan in bio-sample.

Background: The bacterium Vibrio cholerae causes diarrheal illness and can acquire genetic material leading to multiple drug resistance (MDR). Rapid detection of resistance-conferring mobile genetic elements helps avoid the prescription of ineffective antibiotics for specific strains. Colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays provide a rapid and cost-effective means for detection at point-of-care since they do not require specialized equipment, require limited expertise to perform, and can take less than 30 min to perform in resource limited regions.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis(MASH) is commonly seen in biopsy proven steatotic liver disease(SLD). Life-style intervention reaching a weight loss higher than 10% promotes MASH resolution, but this goal is only achieved by a small number of patients. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty(ESG) has recently emerged as a safe and effective option to promote weight loss in obese population.

Objective: To ascertain the effect of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on routine (non-COVID) Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) turnover in a tertiary-care teaching institute, utilizing the cumulated, finalized dataset one year after the pandemic ceased to be a "public health emergency of international concern".

Methodology: In this retrospective analysis, annual routine turnover in the ORL-HNS categories (otology, rhinology/skull-base, head-neck/airway, emergency, miscellaneous) for the COVID-period (2020-21) were individually compared with pre-COVID (2017-19) data. Subsequently, categorical turnovers, along with the major surgeries in each category, were compared trimester-wise in the COVID-period.

Programmable Synthesis of Cationic Azaperylenes via Rh(III)-Catalyzed Multiple C-H/N-H Bonds Activation and Annulation.

Org Lett

December 2024

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Electrochemical and Magneto-Chemical Functional Materials, College of Chemistry and Bioengineering, Guilin University of Technology, Guilin 541004, China.

Rh(III)-catalyzed dual N-H and triple C-H activation/(4 + 2) annulation of 2-aryl-2,3-dihydro-1-perimidines and alkynes has been disclosed to construct 4,5,14,15-tetrasubstituted cationic azaperylenes with high yields (up to 95%) and broad scope. Tandem (4 + 2) annulation of 1-perimidines with vinylene carbonate and alkynes affords 4,5-disubstituted azaperylene salts, and -alkynyl 1-perimidines undergo an intra- and intermolecular annulation cascade to give 4,5,14-trisubstituted targets. Most of the intermediates were detected by ESI-MS, indicating a convincible mechanism including three possible paths.

The article reports a hitherto-unknown aromatic proton transfer (APT) to the o-amine function chelated to manganese(II) ion and disintegration of the molecule generating an aryne intermediate. The reaction of (NQ)-NH(AQ) (LH) with manganese(II) acetate in boiling DMF generates [Mn(L)], where the LH ligands undergo disintegration forming manganese(II) complexes of AQ and an 1,4-naphthoquinonyne intermediate based on benzoquinone ring, that has been defined as [NQ-2H] (NQ and AQ abbreviate respectively 1,4-naphthoquinone and 8-aminoquinoline fragments). The fragmentation reaction of LH depends on the metal precursor used, solvent and temperature.

Determination of Flavonoid Glycoside Isomers Using Vision Transformer and Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

Plants (Basel)

December 2024

College of Pharmacy and Integrated Research Institute for Drug Development, Dongguk University-Seoul, Goyang 10326, Republic of Korea.

A vision transformer (ViT)-based deep neural network was applied to classify the flavonoid glycoside isomers by analyzing electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) spectra. Our model successfully classified the flavonoid isomers with various substitution patterns (3-O, 6-C, 7-O, 8-C, 4'-O) and multiple glycosides, achieving over 80% accuracy during training. In addition, the experimental spectra from flavonoid glycoside standards were acquired with different adducts, and our model showed robust performance regardless of the experimental conditions.
