December 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, University Hospital Halle (Saale), Ernst-Grube-Str. 40, 06120, Halle (Saale), Germany.

This article describes the surgical treatment of superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) by isolating the dehiscence using transmastoid two-point canal plugging while preserving the high-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) of the affected semicircular canal. The superior semicircular canal is opened via a transmastoid approach anterior (as far from the ampulla as possible) and posterior to the dehiscence and then plugged with connective tissue and bone dust. In two clinical exemplary cases, vestibular testing showed that the VOR measured by video head impulse (vHIT) test was preserved (patient 1: gain preoperative 0.

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) emerged as an alternative treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) a decade ago. Long-term clinical trials and real-world data show that HNS treatment provides significant and sustained improvements in both OSA disease control and quality-of-life measures over time. Given the nature of HNS treatment, with the requirement of using an implantable neurostimulation system, patient safety is a critical domain in the assessment of this technology.

Background: Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) is a rare but aggressive tumor with a poor prognosis. The co-inhibitory receptors T cell immunoglobulin and mucinodomain containing-3 (TIM-3), lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3) and T cell immunoglobulin and immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif domain (TIGIT) are promising new targets in anti-cancer immunotherapy. The expression profiles of these immune checkpoint molecules (ICMs) and potential prognostic implications have not been characterized in SNMM yet.

IL-10 suppresses T cell expansion while promoting tissue-resident memory cell formation during SARS-CoV-2 infection in rhesus macaques.

PLoS Pathog

July 2024

T lymphocyte Biology Section, Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, United States of America.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how inflammatory responses affect pulmonary disease during SARS-CoV-2 infection, specifically using the rhesus macaque model of mild COVID-19.
  • It highlights the contrasting roles of the cytokines IFNγ and IL-10, where IFNγ contributes to lung lesions but isn't necessary for viral replication suppression, while IL-10 reduces inflammation and aids in T cell memory without hindering viral clearance.
  • The research reveals that IL-10 plays a key role in fostering airway memory T cells, indicating its importance in the immune response during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnancy is a recognized risk factor for Pituitary Apoplexy (PA), but non-gestational risk factors are inconsistent in existing research.
  • A systematic review of seven studies with nearly 5,000 participants revealed that about 10% experienced PA, with macroadenomas being a significant risk factor.
  • The study concludes that no single non-gestational risk factor solely causes PA, but larger tumor size and non-functioning adenomas are important factors, suggesting these patients may need prompt surgical intervention.
